Validation and Verification for INL Modelica-based TEDS models Via Experimental Results

This report provides an overview on the verification and validation (V&V) of the Thermal Energy Distribution System (TEDS) model developed in the Modelica process modeling ecosystem using experimental data. Model development has led to the creation of a dynamic process model of the experimental TEDS facility housed within the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The model was then used during the preconstruction phase of the experimental effort to inform experimental design (e.g., insulation requirements, bypass line placement, expected performance of components) and to test innovative control schemes prior to the initial operation. The TEDS model developed in Modelica includes the primary components of the TEDS experimental unit: a 200kW Chromalox heater; a single-tank packed-bed thermal energy storage system filled with 0.125-inch alumina (Al2O3) beads; an ethylene-glycol-to-Therminol-66 heat exchanger; system piping; five control valves; and all associated temperature, pressure, and volumetric flow sensors. Using the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) V&V methodologies, considered the gold standard in the engineering field, the model was verified using a combination of static analysis, spatial convergence, and regression tests. Then using dynamic time warping (DTW) initial runs to validate and tune the TEDS model versus the experiment were conducted. This tuning method was accomplished using the INL Risk Analysis Virtual ENvironment (RAVEN) software package. Tuning is required to account for physical phenomena that are less understood within the empirical heat transfer correlations. Through the commencement of this work, a systems-level model of TEDS with associated control systems, sensors, piping diameters, and component capabilities has been created. This model was utilized in the pre-experimental phase to inform system design, insulation thicknesses, and potential control schemes to operate the system effectively and safely. Then, initial experimental startup and operational data were used to demonstrate the validation and tuning methodology. This process demonstrates the classical two-step approach of a model informing experimental design followed by the experiment validation and tuning the model.

White paper on Verification and Validation for Cyber Emulation Models

All disciplines that use models to predict the behavior of real-world systems need to determine the accuracy of the models’ results. Techniques for verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) focus on improving the credibility of computational models and assessing their predictive capability. VVUQ emphasizes rigorous evaluation of models and how they are applied to improve understanding of model limitations and quantify the accuracy of model predictions.

An Overview of Gemma FY2021 Verification Activities

Though the method-of-moments implementation of the electric-field integral equation plays an important role in computational electromagnetics, it provides many code-verification challenges due to the different sources of numerical error and their possible interactions. Matters are further complicated by singular integrals, which arise from the presence of a Green's function. In this report, we document our research to address these issues, as well as its implementation and testing in Gemma.

Verification of MCNP Critical Benchmark Model of U233-COMP-THERM-004 [Slides]

The verification of U233-COMP-THERM-004 contributed to the LANL centralized repository that’s currently under development. Revisions made to the MCNP model were statistically significant. Magnitude of bias is relatively small in comparison to other uranium benchmark biases and thus will likely have not a significant effect on the USL.

Fast Reactor Physics Model Verification Studies using ARC and PyARC Workflows

PyARC was recently developed at Argonne National Laboratory to automate many of the tasks required in the ARC (Argonne Reactor Computation) fast reactor simulation workflow, from input file generation, code execution, data transfer between ARC codes, and output postprocessing. PyARC will likely be the path forward to train new users of the ARC codes with the goal of wide adoption by the national laboratories, academia, and industry. In particular, for the ANL-JAEA collaboration under the Civil Nuclear Working Group (CNWG) project agreement NE-01, PyARC will be used to model the Joyo and EBR-II reactors for comparisons with measured data and calculated results from JAEA (Task 3: Fast Reactor Fuel and Core). As an additional avenue for verification and validation, this report investigates the use of PyARC towards a variety of existing ARC-based reactor models, in order to understand its efficacy in replicating the behavior of base ARC codes and better understand any limitations within modeling realistic fast reactor problems. To this end, PyARC was used to model the Joyo MKI, RBEC Benchmark-M, PRISM Mod-B, and EBR-II Run 138B cores, and its results were compared to those from existing ARC-based models. It was found that for hexagonal-based geometries PyARC was able to replicate the behavior of ARC codes to within 10 pcm for small reactor cores, and ~150pcm difference in eigenvalue for larger cores. These discrepancies are attributed primarily to differences in local mesh refinement options between ARC and PyARC, which currently cannot be resolved with PyARC’s latest version (1.6.0). In some of these cases, PyARC was used to model steady-state problems with initial core compositions originating from a prior REBUS depletion calculation. While PyARC was not designed to support such steady-state calculations, workarounds were applied to replicate the behavior of ARC-based calculations as closely as possible. Thus, these results demonstrate the wide extent to which they can be applied to fast reactor problems while still providing immense benefit to the user in terms of automating and standardizing common routines within the fast reactor analysis workflow. This study concluded that PyARC will be suitable for modeling the steady-state conditions of the EBR-II and Joyo fast reactors as part of the CNWG project agreement.
