Heterogenization of polyoxometalates as solid catalysts in aerobic oxidation of glycerol

A series of heterogeneous catalysts based on phosphomolybdic salts with different metals in counter or substituent positions, L n PMo 12 O 40 (L = Al 3+ , Fe 3+ , Cr 3+ , Ti 4+ , Zr 4+ and Zn 2+ , abbreviated as LPMo 12 ) and H x PMo 11 LO 39 (L = Zn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Ti 4+ , for Ti 4+ ; the amount of O is 40, abbreviated as HPMo 11 L), were prepared using a simple calcination treatment and were evaluated in aerobic oxidation of glycerol. After calcination at about 250 °C for 4 h, homogeneous Ln P Mo 12 O 40 ·nH 2 O and H x PMo 11 LO 39 ·mH 2 O became heterogeneous. Their specific surface areas were also enhanced as well as their activity and reusability. Similar to the homogeneous catalysts, AlPMo 12 treated at 400 °C (AlPMo 12 -400) was found to be the most active catalyst in glycerol oxidation to lactic acid, with 96.1% yield and 98.6% conversion at 60 °C for 5 h with 1 MPa of O 2 ; it gave a turnover number (TON; TON = [LA]/[catalyst]) of 2.4 × 10 2 , higher than that of AlPMo 12 -250 treated at 250 °C (TON = 2.0 × 10 2 ). AlPMo 12 behaved as a heterogeneous catalyst in glycerol oxidation and could be reused at least 12 times. AlPMo 12 -400 also performed well in crude glycerol oxidation, affording lactic acid yields as high as 86.8%.

Discharging Behavior of Hollandite α-MnO 2 in a Hydrated Zinc-Ion Battery

Hollandite, α-MnO 2 , is of interest as a prospective cathode material for hydrated zinc ion batteries (ZIBs); however, the mechanistic understanding of the discharge process remains limited. Herein, a systematic study on the initial discharge of α-MnO 2 cathode under hydrated environment was reported using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with complementary experiments, where the DFT predictions well described the experimental measurements on discharge voltages and manganese oxidation states. According to the DFT calculations, both protons (H + ) and zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) contribute to the discharging potentials of α-MnO 2 observed experimentally, where the presence of water plays an essential role during the process. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanistic understanding of the discharge of α-MnO 2 in hydrated ZIBs, emphasizing the crucial interplay among the H 2 O molecules, the intercalated Zn 2+ or H + ions, and the Mn 4+ ions on the tunnel wall to enhance the stability of discharged states and, thus, the electrochemical performances in hydrated ZIBs.

Oxygen-deficient ammonium vanadate for flexible aqueous zinc batteries with high energy density and rate capability at -30 °C

Aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) have received significant attention owing to environmental friendliness, high energy density and inherent safety. However, lack of high-performance cathodes has become the main bottleneck of AZBs development. Here, oxygen-deficient NH 4 V 4 O 10–x ·nH 2 O (NVOH) microspheres are synthesized and used as cathodes for AZBs. The experimental test and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies in the lattice lower the Zn 2+ diffusion energy barrier, which enables fast Zn 2+ diffusion and good electrochemical performance in a wide temperature range. The suppressed side reactions also can help to improve the low temperature performance. NVOH shows a high energy density of 372.4 Wh kg –1 and 296 Wh kg –1 at room temperature and –30 °C, respectively. Moreover, NVOH maintains a 100% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g –1 and ~94% capacity retention after 2600 cycles at 2 A g –1 and –30 °C. Investigation into the mechanism of the process reveals that the capacity contribution of surface capacitive behaviors is dominant and capacity attenuation is mainly caused by the decay of diffusion-controlled capacity. As a result, flexible AZBs can steadily power portable electronics under different bending states, demonstrating its great potential in wide-temperature wearable device.
