A refined design concept for sulfur-tolerant Pd catalyst supported on zeolite by shape-selective exclusion and hydrogen spillover for hydrogenation of aromatics

Sulfur poisoning of noble metal catalysts has been a major challenge for decades. This work demonstrates the superior sulfur tolerance of a hybrid zeolite-supported Pd catalyst for hydrogenation of tetralin containing benzothiophene. The hybrid catalyst consists of Pd supported on a large-pore acidic zeolite Y (Pd/HY) and a small-pore zeolite A without (Pd/HA) or with surface metal passivation by chemical vapor deposition of SiO 2 (SiO 2 -Pd/HA) and with potassium ion exchange (SiO 2 -Pd/KA). Pd/HY is very active for tetralin hydrogenation but quickly deactivates after exposure to benzothiophene at high concentration of 100 ppm sulfur. The SiO 2 -coated Pd/HA shows no activity for tetralin hydrogenation, but continues to activate H 2 and serve as a source of hydrogen spillover from Pd/HA since these metal sites are protected from thiophenic sulfur due to size-selective exclusion. Adding K ion-exchanged and SiO 2 -coated catalyst SiO 2 -Pd/KA to Pd/HY is even more effective for enhancing sulfur tolerance, both for tetralin hydrogenation and for isomerization of cis-decalin to trans-decalin in the presence of benzothiophene. The turnover frequencies (TOF) of all the catalysts are similar at the exposed sulfur/Pd atomic ratio of around 0.5. With further increase in sulfur/Pd ratio, rapid decline in TOF was observed on Pd/HY, but SiO 2 -Pd/KA + Pd/HY hybrid catalyst shows a significantly higher TOF than that over Pd/HY, even though SiO 2 -Pd/KA or SiO 2 -Pd/HA alone shows no TOF for tetralin hydrogenation. Even after high-dose poisoning at 400 ppm sulfur, the SiO 2 -Pd/KA + Pd/HY hybrid recovered activity more quickly than SiO 2 -Pd/HA + Pd/HY, while the latter in turn is much better than Pd/HY alone. These results point to the higher activity for hydrogen spillover from SiO 2 -Pd/KA where Pd metal sites are protected from not only thiophenic sulfur but also inorganic sulfur H 2 S by shape-selective exclusion. The present work further establishes the validity of shape-selective exclusion and hydrogen spillover in the design concept proposed for a sulfur-tolerant bimodal acidic zeolite-supported metal catalyst for hydrogenation of naphthalene [C.S. Song, Chemtech, 29 (1999) 26–30], and refines the design concept further for limiting the size of small pore in hybrid catalysts to~3 Å for restricting access of H 2 S but allowing entrance of H 2 . Further, this refined design concept is applicable to other supported monometallic and bimetallic catalysts.

Bay capping via acetylene addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Mechanism and kinetics

The bay-capping mechanism on PAH armchair edges and the kinetics of acetylene addition to 6–6–5 and 5–6–5 bays have been explored by ab initio/RRKM-ME calculations. The bays on the edges were modeled by C 21 H 11 and C 20 H 9 radicals produced by H abstractions from 7H-benzo[c]cyclopenta[e]pyrene and dicyclopenta[cf]pyrene. The C 20 H 9 + C 2 H 2 reaction is shown to have a low entrance barrier and to rapidly form the capped product, indaceno[2,1,8,7-cdefg]pyrene, along with ethynyl substituted dicyclopenta[cf]pyrene at temperatures above 1400 K. The reactivity of C 21 H 11 is shown to be governed by the location of the unpaired electron; the π radical R1 formed by H abstraction from the CH 2 group in 7H-benzo[c]cyclopenta[e]pyrene reacts with C 2 H 2 very slowly owing to a high entrance barrier, with the bay-capping rate constant approaching 10 -16 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 only at temperatures above 2000K. Further, this result reaffirms that the growth of π aryl radicals via acetylene addition is inefficient and reflects the generally low reactivity of such radicals where the spin density is highly delocalized over the entire polyaromatic system. Alternatively, the σ C 21 H 11 radical R2 produced by H abstraction from the five-membered ring at the bay rapidly reacts with C 2 H 2 forming the bay-capped product, with the rate constant on the order of 10 -12 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 at T≥1500K. Rate constants for the capping reactions at the 6–6–5 and 5–6–5 bays are compared with those at the 6–0–6, 6–6–6, and 6–5–6 bays. The site-specific bay-capping rate constants have been utilized in kMC simulations of the PAH growth and the results showed measurable differences when the 6–6–5 and 5–6–5 bay-capping reactions are taken into account, including an increase of the growth rate and the formation of closed-shell PAH and a rise of the number of embedded five-membered rings accompanied with a slight decrease of their overall amount.

Novel 3D Cubic Topology in Hybrid Lead Halides with a Symmetric Aromatic Triammonium Exhibiting Water Stability

The limitations of three-dimensional (3D) perovskites are related to their narrow structural tunability of the organic cations and their moisture sensitivity. Herein, we report a new family of 3D cubic hybrid metal halides (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 X 31 (X = I, Br), where T is 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl)benzene. The materials are synthesized through an in situ N-alkylation of T and an efficient one-step solvothermal reaction containing ethanol, initiating a tunable synthetic avenue for the acquisition of structurally complex hybrid halides with luminophores. (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 X 31 consist of an unprecedented Ia3̅ framework of [Pb 11 X 31 ] 9– one-dimensional (1D) chains embedded with (T-Et 6 ) 3+ cations, affording an overall 3D topology. Here, the constituent [Pb 11 X 31 ] 9– chains include exclusively octahedral lead halide units with clusters of face- and edge-sharing connectivity, giving rise to weak broad emission centered at ~660 nm observed at 78 K. (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 I 31 demonstrates water stability for at least 7 days. Synthesis through ambient pressure results in tunable structural variations of zero-dimensional (0D) structures rendering T 7 Pb 3 Br 27 ·DMF and T 2 Sn 3 Br 18 ·4H 2 O·0.5Br 2 , both of which feature blue PL emission at room temperature.
