Several intact or broken stringers attached to an orthotropic sheet with a crack

Several intact or broken stringers which are continuously attached to a cracked orthotropic sheet through an adhesive are considered. The effect of orthotropy on the stress intensity factors is investigated. The stringers are assumed to be partially debonded due to high stress concentrations. The shear stress distribution between the stringers and the plate and the stress intensity factors are obtained from an integral equation which represents the continuity of displacements along the bond lines.

Attaching strain gages by ultrasonic plastic welding

Technique employs application of pressure and ultrasound to effect welding of encapsulated strain gates to metallic surfaces. Process requires no heat or adhesives. Technique might also be used to simplify curing of epoxy adhesives and for attachment problems like bonding cryogenic temperature sensors to structural parts.

Method for attaching a fused-quartz mirror to a conductive metal substrate

A fused-quartz mirror is attached to a conductive metal substrate by the following steps: tinning one surface of a fused-quartz mirror with a solder of substantially pure indium; tinning a metallic substrate with an indium eutectic alloy consisting essentially of indium bismuth, lead and tin having a melting point substantially below that of indium; heating the eutectic alloy to a temperature substantially above its melting point, but below that of the solder; floating the mirror into place, and subsequently cooling the alloy to a temperature substantially below its melting point.

The Venus bow shock - Detached or attached

Examination of the locations of the bow shock encounters of Mariner 5 and 10 and Venera 4, 6, and 9 suggests that the bow shock of Venus is on the average detached from the ionosphere. However, the standoff distance of the nose of the shock is closer to the planet than the distance that one would obtain by simply scaling the solar wind Venus interaction under the assumption that Venus completely deflects the solar wind. This fact implies that there is a significant influx of solar wind plasma into the Venus ionosphere. If the absorption of the solar wind by Venus is great enough, the shock may become attached to the ionosphere. The Mariner 10 bow shock encounter may have occurred during such a period. A rough estimate of the average fraction of the solar wind incident on the cross section of the planet that is absorbed is 29%.

Aircraft Lightning Attachment Phenomena

An aircraft's influence on lightning-strike occurrence was investigated. The compression of an electric field around an aircraft was considered in mathematical calculations of an aircraft's ability to store charge. Model test results were used to predict lightning-strike attachment zones in an analysis of aircraft design.

Noise of deflectors used for flow attachment with STOL-OTW configurations

Future STOL aircraft may utilize engine-over-the-wing installations in which the exhaust nozzles are located above and separated from the upper surface of the wing. An external jet flow deflector can be used with such installations to provide flow attachment to the wing/flap surfaces for lift augmentation. Deflector noise in the flyover plane measured with several model-scale nozzle/deflector/wing configurations is examined. The deflector-associated noise is correlated in terms of velocity and geometry parameters. The data also indicate that the effective overall sound pressure level of the deflector-associated noise peaks in the forward quadrant near 40 deg from the inlet axis.

Effect of surface texture by ion beam sputtering on implant biocompatibility and soft tissue attachment

The objectives in this report were to use the ion beam sputtering technique to produce surface textures on polymers, metals, and ceramics. The morphology of the texture was altered by varying both the width and depth of the square pits which were formed by ion beam erosion. The width of the ribs separating the pits were defined by the mask used to produce the texture. The area of the surface containing pits varies as the width was changed. The biological parameters used to evaluate the biological response to the texture were: (1) fibrous capsule and inflammatory response in subcutaneous soft tissue; (2) strength of the mechanical attachment of the textured surface by the soft tissue; and (3) morphology of the epidermal layer interfacing the textured surface of percutaneous connectors. Because the sputter yield on teflon ribs was approximately an order of magnitude larger than any other material the majority of the measurements presented in the report were obtained with teflon.

Cartridge firing device designed for attachment, release and ejection of a satellite

Design considerations of a cartridge firing device are described. Emphasis is placed on performances regarding satellite attachment and accuracies of the path and velocity during separation and ejection. Tests conducted to demonstrate the device efficiency are discussed. Test set-up for velocity measurement, parameters affecting the ejection velocity, and gas pressure of cartridge fired generators are among the factors covered.

Noise of deflectors used for flow attachment with STOL-OTW configurations

An external jet-flow deflector can be used with such installations to provide flow attachment to the wing/flap surfaces for lift augmentation. In the present work, the deflector noise in the flyover plane measured with several model-scale nozzle/deflector/wing configurations is examined. The deflector-associated noise is correlated in terms of velocity and geometry parameters. The data also indicate that the effective overall sound pressure level of the deflector-associated noise peaks in the forward quadrant near 40 deg from the inlet axis.

Thermal insulation attaching means

An improved isolation system is provided for attaching ceramic tiles of insulating material to the surface of a structure to be protected against extreme temperatures of the nature expected to be encountered by the space shuttle orbiter. This system isolates the fragile ceramic tiles from thermally and mechanically induced vehicle structural strains. The insulating tiles are affixed to a felt isolation pad formed of closely arranged and randomly oriented fibers by means of a flexible adhesive and in turn the felt pad is affixed to the metallic vehicle structure by an additional layer of flexible adhesive.

Propellant grain dynamics in aft attach ring of shuttle solid rocket booster

An analytical technique for implementing simultaneously the temperature, dynamic strain, real modulus, and frequency properties of solid propellant in an unsymmetrical vibrating ring mode is presented. All dynamic parameters and sources are defined for a free vibrating ring-grain structure with initial displacement and related to a forced vibrating system to determine the change in real modulus. Propellant test data application is discussed. The technique was developed to determine the aft attach ring stiffness of the shuttle booster at lift-off.

Ceramic blade attachments

Studies under way on two concepts for producing a turbine rotor with ceramic blades and superalloy disks are discussed. One concept employs hot-pressed silicon nitride blades and a compliant interlayer at the blade root end fitting whereas the second concept relies on a superplastic plastic forging technique to attach ceramic blades to the metal disk. This latter concept has been hot spin tested at 2250 F and 45,000 RPM for 50 hours in a vacuum spin pit. The fully bladed (30 blades) rotor survived this major test.

Flared tube attachment fitting

Tubes can be flared first, then attached to valves and other flow line components, with new fitting that can be disassembled and reused. Installed fitting can be disassembled so parts can be inspected. It can be salvaged and reused without damaging flared tube; tube can be coated, tempered, or otherwise treated after it has been flared, rather than before, as was previously required. Fitting consists of threaded male portion with conical seating surface, hexagonal nut with hole larger than other diameter of flared end of tube, and split ferrule.

Thermal performance of a mechanically attached ablator tile for on-orbit repair of shuttle TPS

The reusable surface insulation (RSI) material used in the shuttle thermal protection system is susceptible to damage. If any RSI tiles are damaged or lost during ascent, they must be repaired or replaced prior to entry. One approach to replacing a damaged or missing RSI tile consists of mechanically attaching a tile of ablation material in the place of the RSI tile. The thermal performance of this type of repair tile was evaluated in a simulated entry heating environment. The test specimen consisted of the ablator repair tile mechanically fastened to the strain isolation pad and surrounded by RSI tiles. The evaluation of the thermal performance was based on temperature response, surface integrity, and predicted flight performance. When the ablator tile protruded 1/8 inch above the surrounding RSI tiles, the forward facing steps caused significant inflow of hot gas down the ablator RSI joints and this inflow caused greatly increased back surface temperatures.
