Development of lithium diffused radiation resistant solar cells, part 2

The work performed to investigate the effect of various process parameters on the performance of lithium doped P/N solar cells is described. Effort was concentrated in four main areas: (1) the starting material, (2) the boron diffusion, (3) the lithium diffusion, and (4) the contact system. Investigation of starting material primarily involved comparison of crucible grown silicon (high oxygen content) and Lopex silicon (low oxygen content). In addition, the effect of varying growing parameters of crucible grown silicon on lithium cell output was also examined. The objective of the boron diffusion studies was to obtain a diffusion process which produced high efficiency cells with minimal silicon stressing and could be scaled up to process 100 or more cells per diffusion. Contact studies included investigating sintering of the TiAg contacts and evaluation of the contact integrity.

Terrestrial photovoltaic cell process testing

The paper examines critical test parameters, criteria for selecting appropriate tests, and the use of statistical controls and test patterns to enhance PV-cell process test results. The coverage of critical test parameters is evaluated by examining available test methods and then screening these methods by considering the ability to measure those critical parameters which are most affected by the generic process, the cost of the test equipment and test performance, and the feasibility for process testing.

A study of the factors which control the efficiency of ion-implanted silicon solar cells

The objective of this work was to determine experimentally the ion-implantation parameters and furnace annealing conditions required to produce high-efficiency solar cells. A comprehensive experimental study was conducted in which the optimum ion-implantation parameters were found by a systematic variation of the implant parameters followed by detailed studies of solar-cell devices. Two furnace heat-treatment techniques were found which effectively anneal the implanted layers and at the same time preserve or improve the diffusion length in the bulk silicon. Detailed characteristics of both the junction and bulk properties of solar cells fabricated over the spectrum of implant parameters are discussed. Optimized implant parameters and annealing conditions were found which allow for the fabrication of 14-15-percent (AM1) efficient solar cells.

High efficiency thin-film GaAs solar cells

Several oxidation techniques are discussed which have been found to increase the open circuit (V sub oc) of metal-GaAs Schottky barrier solar cells, the oxide chemistry, attempts to measure surface state parameters, the evolving characteristics of the solar cell as background contamination (has been decreased, but not eliminated), results of focused Nd/YAG laser beam recrystallization of Ge films evaporated onto tungsten, and studies of AMOS solar cells fabricated on sliced polycrystalline GaAs wafers. Also discussed are projected materials availability and costs for GaAs thin-film solar cells.

Effects of operating parameters on PAFC stack performance

This work was performed to assess actual relationships of phosphoric acid fuel cell voltage responses obtained from subscale cells with air-cooled and full size cells in stacks as a function of operating parameters. Key relationships were verified and found to be in agreement with the Nerst equation. An empirical equation was developed to predict cell voltages as a function of the measureable parameters.

Crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene.

A crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene is proposed with the help of data of oriented crystals grown during polymerization. The unit cell is monoclinic with the parameters a = 8.57 A, b = 10.62 A, c = 6.54 A (chain axis), and beta = 101.3 deg. Four repeating units per cell lead to a calculated density of 1.185 g/cu cm and a packing density of 0.71. The probable space group is P2 sub 1/m.

Sunspot models with Alfven wave emission

Sunspot models have been computed on the assumption that the missing flux is transported by undissipated Alfven waves. In order to estimate the flux of these waves, we propose an extension of Opik's cellular model of convection to include the effects of a vertical magnetic field on horizontal gas flow. Horizontal motions, not vertical motions, are impeded more or less severely depending on the electrical conductivity, and this reduces the convective flux. These motions, however, shake the field lines; this is assumed to be a source of Alfven waves, compensating for the reduction in the convective flux. The free parameter D/H (ratio of cell diameter to cell depth) is adjusted such that the total sum of radiative, convective, and Alfven wave fluxes remains constant at all depths and equals the undisturbed solar flux entering the spot from below. Our treatment is speculative to some extent, but it leads to a unique spot model for a given field strength.

CdS thin film solar cells for terrestrial power

The development of very low cost long lived Cu2S/CdS thin film solar cells for large scale energy conversion is reported. Excellent evaporated metal grid patterns were obtained using a specially designed aperture mask. Vacuum evaporated gold and copper grids of 50 lines per inch and 1 micron thickness were adequate electrically for the fine mesh contacting grid. Real time roof top sunlight exposure tests of encapsulated CdS cells showed no loss in output after 5 months. Accelerated life testing of encapsulated cells showed no loss of output power after 6 months of 12 hour dark-12 hour AMI illumination cycles at 40 C, 60 C, 80 C and 100 C temperatures. However, the cells changed their basic parameters, such as series and shunt resistance and junction capacitance.

Applications of remote sensing, volume 1

The author has identified the following significant results. ECHO successfully exploits the redundancy of states characteristics of sampled imagery of ground scenes to achieve better classification accuracy, reduce the number of classifications required, and reduce the variability of classification results. The information required to produce ECHO classifications are cell size, cell homogeneity, cell-to-field annexation parameters, input data, and a class conditional marginal density statistics deck.

Comet flyby sample return experiment

Dust from several comets can be returned to earth with minimum propulsion effort after a high-speed encounter. The collection concept involves the capture of individual dust particles by condensation in a cell after vaporization by a thin diaphragm. This collection concept has been validated in laboratory tests. To compensate for the slower laboratory velocities in a two-stage light-gas gun, higher-density metals (Zn and Cd) have been used for particles and diaphragms to simulate hypervelocity vaporization. Teflon has proved to be a suitable material for the collection cell; more than 50 percent of the vaporized projectile material has been recovered by chemical etching from such cells. Hypervelocity-impact parameters (such as diaphragm-to-projectile ratio, hole size, and plume angles) determined by tests permit the modification of existing analytical models. These new findings are necessary for flyby cometary experiments.

Quantification of rat retinal growth and vascular population changes after single and split doses of proton irradiation: translational study using stereology methods

This study quantified architectural and population changes in the rat retinal vasculature after proton irradiation using stereology. A 100 MeV conformal proton beam delivered 8, 14, 20 and 28 Gy as single and split doses to the whole eye. The vascular networks were prepared from retinal digests. Stereological methods were used to obtain the area of the retina and unbiased estimates of microvessel/artery/vein endothelial, pericyte and smooth muscle population, and vessel length. The retinal area increased progressively in the unirradiated, age-matched controls and in the retinas irradiated with 8 and 14 Gy, indicating uniform progressive retinal growth. No growth occurred after 20 and 28 Gy. Regression analysis of total endothelial cell number in all vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) after irradiation documented a progressive time- and dose-dependent cell loss occurring over 15 to 24 months. The difference from controls was significant (P<0.01) after 28 Gy given in single and split doses and after 20 Gy given as a split dose (P<0.05). Total vessel length in microvessel was significantly shortened at 20 and 28 Gy compared to that of controls (P<0.05). No evident dose recovery was observed in the endothelial populations after split doses. At 10 Gy, the rate of endothelial cell loss, a dose parameter used to characterize the time- and dose-dependent loss of the endothelial population, was doubled.

Toward Adaptive Mixed-Element Unstructured Grids for Simulations of Viscous Flows

Accurate prediction of surface skin friction and heat transfer for viscous flow applications using computational fluid dynamics tools necessitates thin wall-normal elements in the boundary layer. A tetrahedral adaptation process is extended to incorporate the advancing front local reconnection procedure. Thin boundary-layer grids are adapted from the solution, which governs the boundary-layer grid parameters such as first cell height off the wall. The process enables grid-converged steady-state results from a CAD file. Results are presented across the speed range from low subsonic flow over an airfoil to high-speed flows over blunt bodies and a rocket.

Transport velocity transformation - A convenient method for performance analysis of multilayer solar cell structure

It is noted that in the case of low-level injection, space-charge quasi-neutrality, and spatially constant material parameters (including an electrostatic field), the individual layer can be treated analytically and the basic solar cell performance parameters can be evaluated from three equations. The first equation represents the transformation of the transport velocity across the layer from the other layer boundary. The second establishes the light-generated current output from the layer interface, under the influence of the transport velocities and minority-carrier density at both layer boundaries and of bulk recombination. The third equation describes the flow of these carriers across other layers. The power of the approach is considered to lie in its facility for analysis of the solar cell's performance layer by layer, giving a clear picture of the individual layer's influence on cell efficiency.

Electrostatic bonding of thin (cycle sine 3 mil) 7070 cover glass to Ta2O5 AR-coated thin (cycle sine 2 mil) silicon wafers and solar cells

Electrostatic bonding of thin cover glass to thin solar cells was researched. Silicon solar cells, wafers, and Corning 7070 glass of from about 0.002" to about 0.003" in thickness were used in the investigation to establish optimum parameters for producing mechanically acceptable bonds while minimizing thermal stresses and resultant solar cell electrical parameter degradation.
