Use of a Multiple Hydride Donor To Achieve an n-Doped Polymer with High Solvent Resistance

We report the ability to insolubilize doped semiconducting polymer layers can help enable the fabrication of efficient multilayer solution-processed electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we present a promising approach to simultaneously n-dope and largely insolubilize conjugated polymer films using tetrakis[{4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy}methyl]methane (tetrakis-O-DMBI-H), which consists of four 2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazole (DMBI-H) n-dopant moieties covalently linked to one another. Doping a thiophene-fused benzodifurandione-based oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)-co-thiophene polymer (TBDOPV-T) with tetrakis-O-DMBI-H results in a highly n-doped film with bulk conductivity of 15 S cm –1 . Optical absorption spectra provide evidence for film retention of ~93% after immersion in o-dichlorobenzene for 5 min. The optical absorption signature of the charge carriers in the n-doped polymer decreases only slightly more than that of the neutral polymer under these conditions, indicating that the exposure to solvent also results in negligible dedoping of the film. Moreover, thermal treatment studies on a tetrakis-O-DMBI-H-doped TBDOPV-T film in contact with another undoped polymer film indicate immobilization of the molecular dopant in TBDOPV-T. This is attributed to the multiple electrostatic interactions between each dopant tetracation and up to four nearby anionic doped polymer segments.

Photothermally Activated Artificial Neuromorphic Synapses

Biological nervous systems rely on the coordination of billions of neurons with complex, dynamic connectivity to enable the ability to process information and form memories. In turn, artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing platforms have sought to mimic biological cognition through software-based neural networks and hardware demonstrations utilizing memristive circuitry with fixed dynamics. Here, to incorporate the advantages of tunable dynamic software implementations of neural networks into hardware, we develop a proof-of-concept artificial synapse with adaptable resistivity. This synapse leverages the photothermally induced local phase transition of VO 2 thin films by temporally modulated laser pulses. Such a process quickly modifies the conductivity of the film site-selectively by a factor of 500 to “activate” these neurons and store “memory” by applying varying bias voltages to induce self-sustained Joule heating between electrodes after activation with a laser. These synapses are demonstrated to undergo a complete heating and cooling cycle in less than 120 ns.

Guided combinatorial synthesis and automated characterization expedites the discovery of hard, electrically conductive Pt x Au 1-x films

Sputter-deposited Pt-Au thin films have been reported to develop a hard, stable, nanocrystalline structure, yet little is known about how these characteristics vary with Pt x Au 1-x composition and process conditions. Toward this end, this document describes an extensive, combinatorial Pt-Au thin film library including characterized film compositions, structure, and properties. Complemented by kinematic Monte Carlo simulations of codeposition, a broad range of Pt x Au 1-x compositions (from x ~ 0.02 to 0.93) was first established by sputtering with varied magnetron powers and gun tilt angles. Further, the produced films were subsequently interrogated using automated nanoindentation, x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, surface profilometry, four-point probe sheet resistance techniques, and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy in order to determine how hardness, modulus, density, surface roughness, structure, and resistivity vary with film stoichiometry and process parameters. Combinatorial films displayed an assortment of properties with the hardness of some films exceeding values reported previously for this material system. High hardness, high modulus, and low resistivity were generally attained when using increased deposition energy and reduced angle-of-incidence processes. Overall, the research identified promising, new Pt x Au 1-x compositions for future study and pinpointed strategies for improved deposition.

Plasma properties of hot coronal loops utilizing coordinated SMM and solar research rocket observations

Three improvements in photographic x-ray imaging techniques for solar astronomy are presented. The testing and calibration of a new film processor was conducted; the resulting product will allow photometric development of sounding rocket flight film immediately upon recovery at the missile range. Two fine grained photographic films were calibrated and flight tested to provide alternative detector choices when the need for high resolution is greater than the need for high sensitivity. An analysis technique used to obtain the characteristic curve directly from photographs of UV solar spectra were applied to the analysis of soft x-ray photographic images. The resulting procedure provides a more complete and straightforward determination of the parameters describing the x-ray characteristic curve than previous techniques. These improvements fall into the category of refinements instead of revolutions, indicating the fundamental suitability of the photographic process for x-ray imaging in solar astronomy.

Method for Fabricating Piezoelectric Polymer Acoustic Sensors

A method for forming a sensor includes providing a first and a second film and bonding an internal connection tab there between. The internal connection tab is positioned between the inner surfaces of the first and second film. Then, a conductive adhesive is applied to either the tab or to the inner film surfaces such that the inner surfaces of the film and the tab are electrically connected. Finally, the films are pressed together to bond the film together with the internal connection tab in between.

Microwave conductivity of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films and its relation to microstrip transmission line performance

The discovery of high temperature superconductor oxides has raised the possibility of a new class of millimeter and microwave devices operating at temperatures considerably higher than liquid helium temperatures. Therefore, materials properties such as conductivity, current density, and sheet resistance as a function of temperature and frequency, possible anisotropies, moisture absorption, thermal expansion, and others, have to be well characterized and understood. The millimeter wave response of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/LaAlO3 thin films was studied as a function of temperature and frequency. In particular, the evaluation of their microwave conductivity was emphasized, since knowledge of this parameter provides a basis for the derivation of other relevant properties of these superconducting oxides, and for using them in the fabrication of actual passive circuits. The microwave conductivity for these films was measured at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The values of the conductivity are obtained from the millimeter wave power transmitted through the films, using a two fluid model.

Growth of PdCoO 2 by ozone-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy

We report the in situ , direct epitaxial synthesis of (0001)-oriented PdCoO 2 thin films on c-plane sapphire using ozone-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The resulting films have smoothness, structural perfection, and electrical characteristics that rival the best in situ grown PdCoO 2 thin films in the literature. Metallic conductivity is observed in PdCoO 2 films as thin as ~2.0 nm. The PdCoO 2 films contain 180° in-plane rotation twins. Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that the growth of PdCoO 2 on the (0001) surface of Al 2 O 3 begins with the CoO 2 layer.

US/Russian Joint Film Test

A joint U.S./Russian film test was conducted during MIR Mission 18 to evaluate the effects of radiation on photographic film during long-duration space flights. Two duplicate sets of film were flown on this MIR mission: one set was processed and evaluated by the NASA/JSC Photographic Laboratory, and the other by the RKK Energia's Photographic Laboratory in Moscow. This preliminary report includes only the results of the JSC evaluation (excluding the SN-10 film which was not available for evaluation at the time this report was written). The final report will include an evaluation by JSC of the SN-10 film and an evaluation of the test data by the RKK Energia. ISC's evaluation of the test data showed the positive film flown was damaged very little when exposed to approximately 8 rads of radiation. Two of the three negative films were significantly damaged and the third film was damaged only moderately.

Experimental verification of film-cooling concepts on a turbine vane

An investigation was conducted to verify some film cooling concepts applied to gas turbine vanes. The film cooling air was ejected from a single row of holes on the convex surface and a double row of holes of the concave surface. Tests were conducted at a gas temperature of 1260 K, a gas pressure of 3 atmospheres, and a coolant temperature of 280 K. Mass-velocity ratios were varied between 0 and 2.0. Data were taken without film-cooling holes, with film-cooling holes but without blowing, and with blowing. A small amount of blowing into a nonturbulent boundary layer caused an increase in vane temperatures. Film cooling when combined with convection cooling was verified to be more effective than either film or convective cooling alone.

Ionic Conductivity Enhancement of Polymer Electrolytes by Directed Crystallization

Here, we report that hot stretching of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) can lead to a preferred orientation of PEO crystalline lamellae, thereby reducing the tortuosity of the ion-conduction pathway along the thickness direction of the SPE film, causing improved ionic conductivity. The hot stretching method is implemented by stretching SPE films above the melting point of PEO in an inert environment followed by crystallization at room temperature while maintaining the applied strain. The effect of hot stretching on the crystalline orientation, crystallinity, morphology, and ion transport in PEO with two types of salts, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium triflate (LiCF3SO3), is investigated in detail. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) show that the orientation of PEO crystalline lamellae induces the formation of a short ion-conduction pathway along the through-plane direction of the SPE films, leading to 1.4- to 3.5-fold enhancement in the through-plane ionic conductivity.

Flexible sensor technology

A system and method (referred to as a method) to fabricate sensors and electronic circuits. The method prints a first thin-film having an electronic conductivity of about less than a millionth of a Siemens per meter and a permalloy directly onto the first thin-film. The permalloy has a magnetic permeability greater than a predetermined level and has a thickness within a range of about 1 to 20 microns. The system prints a second thin-film directly onto the permalloy to encapsulate the permalloy onto the first thin-film and prints conductive traces directly onto the surfaces of the first-thin-film, the permalloy, and the second thin-film. In some applications, a sensor is packaged in an additively manufactured three-dimensional cylindrical shape that can be mounted on or is a unitary part of a current carrying conductor without incising, sharing, or severing (e.g., cutting) the current carrying conductor or its insulation.

Signatures of superconducting triplet pairing in Ni–Ga-bilayer junctions

Ni–Ga bilayers are a versatile platform for exploring the competition between strongly antagonistic ferromagnetic and superconducting phases. We characterize the impact of this competition on the transport properties of highly-ballistic Al/Al 2 O 3 (/EuS)/Ni–Ga tunnel junctions from both experimental and theoretical points of view. While the conductance spectra of junctions comprising Ni (3 nm)–Ga (60 nm) bilayers can be well understood within the framework of earlier results, which associate the emerging main conductance maxima with the junction films’ superconducting gaps, thinner Ni (1.6 nm)–Ga (30 nm) bilayers entail completely different physics, and give rise to novel large-bias (when compared to the superconducting gap of the thin Al film as a reference) conductance-peak subseries that we term conductance shoulders. These conductance shoulders might attract considerable attention also in similar magnetic superconducting bilayer junctions, as we predict them to offer an experimentally well-accessible transport signature of superconducting triplet pairings that are induced around the interface of the Ni–Ga bilayer. We further substantiate this claim performing complementary polarized neutron reflectometry measurements on the bilayers, from which we deduce (1) a nonuniform magnetization structure in Ga in a several nanometer-thick area around the Ni–Ga boundary and can simultaneously (2) satisfactorily fit the obtained data only considering the paramagnetic Meissner response scenario. While the latter provides independent experimental evidence of induced triplet superconductivity inside the Ni–Ga bilayer, the former might serve as the first experimental hint of its potential microscopic physical origin. Finally, we introduce a simple phenomenological toy model to confirm also from the theoretical standpoint that superconducting triplet pairings around the Ni–Ga interface can indeed lead to the experimentally observed conductance shoulders, which convinces that our claims are robust and physically justified. Arranging our work in a broader context, we expect that Ni–Ga-bilayer junctions could have a strong potential for future superconducting-spintronics applications whenever an efficient engineering of triplet-pairing superconductivity is required.
