Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Optical Properties of the Barium meta -Pertechnetate Ba[TcO 4 ] 2

High-quality single crystals of the colorless title compound Ba[ 99 TcO 4 ] 2 were prepared from radioactive, isotope-pure 99 TcO 2 by oxidation with H 2 O 2 in an aqueous ammonia solution and subsequent cation metathesis using an ion-exchange column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 to crystallize isotopically to Ba[MnO 4 ] 2 in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with the lattice parameters a = 747.34(5) pm, b = 1244.08(7) pm, and c = 1511.23(9) pm for Z = 8. Its crystal structure features [BaO 12 ] 22- icosahedra surrounded by ten [TcO 4 ] - tetrahedra connected via two edges and eight corners. The optical properties of Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy show the broad O 2- → Tc 7+ ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2p → 4d) process within these discrete [TcO 4 ]- anions at an absorption maximum of around 350 nm.

DXRD : a user-friendly suite of two- and multiple-beam dynamical X-ray diffraction programs

The DXRD program suite consisting of a series of dynamical theory programs is introduced for computing dynamical X-ray diffraction from single crystals. Its interactive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) allow general users to make complicated calculations with minimal effort. It can calculate plane-wave Darwin curves of single crystals (or multiple crystals) for both the Bragg and Laue cases, including grazing-incidence diffraction and backward diffraction (with Bragg angles approaching 90°). It is also capable of simulating rocking curves for divergent incident X-ray beams with finite bandwidths. A unique feature of DXRD is that it provides a convenient GUI-based multiple-beam diffraction program that can accurately compute arbitrary N-beam diffraction of any geometry using a universal 4N × 4N matrix method. DXRD also provides a mapping program for plotting all the multiple-beam diffraction lines (monochromator glitches) in the azimuth–energy coordinate system. All these functions make DXRD a convenient and powerful software tool for designing crystal-based synchrotron/X-ray optics (monochromators, analyzers, polarizers, phase plates etc.) and for crystal characterization, X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction teaching.

Synthesis and Single Crystals of Refractory Oxides of Lanthanides and Thorium

At the completion of this program, we can report that we developed a considerable degree of technical improvements in our ability to perform hydrothermal reactions at high temperatures and pressures. We can now routinely perform reactions at 700-750°C and 200 MPa. Currently we are in the process of exploiting this new technology synthesizing a range of exotic new materials investigating relatively poorly understood materials. Our initial efforts focused on the chemistry of rare earth oxides with tetravalent and pentavalent oxides. We recently published a study of the lanthanides with Nb 5+ and Ta 5+ ions, where we grew oxides such as RENdO 4 and RETaO 4 as high quality single crystals. These compounds were targeted as potential hosts for luminescent and scintillation materials, particularly given that they are among the densest oxide hosts and hence have good potential as absorbers for high energy radiation like X-rays and gamma rays. We also isolated a range of unusual new rare earth tantalates with very complex structures. indicating that the chemistry is very sensitive to conditions. We performed some fairly comprehensive examinations of the solid-state chemistry of rare earth ions with various tetravalent metal ions especially Si 4+ , Ge 4+ , Sn 4+ and Ti 4+ . Given the potential role of rare earth silicates in immobilizing radioactive waste elements in long-term storage, and the similarity of our hydrothermal fluids with known geological conditions, this chemistry continues to be relevant. We prepared an extensive series of new lanthanide germanates (e.g. RE 13 Ge 6 O 31 (OH), BaRE 10 (GeO 4 ) 4 O 8 ). and found that there is there is almost no overlap between the chemistry of the rare earth silicates. Stannic oxide (SnO 2 ) is much more refractory and requires higher temperatures and of mineralizer concentrations. One significant result is the growth of RE 2 Sn 2 O 7 pyrochlore single crystals. These are of interest because the rare earth stannate pyrochlores are known to display a wide range of magnetic frustration such as spin ice behavior. We grew high quality single crystals of rare earth germanate and stannate pyrochlores and this led to a collaboration with Professor Kate Ross at Colorado State. Preliminary measurements, indicate that the crystals contain no detectable defects or site disorder. Initial neutron diffraction on single crystals was performed at Oak Ridge, and more detailed experiments involving the Ross group are underway at both NIST and ORNL. This particular chemistry has turned out to be the most potentially significant work on this project and the collaborative effort with Prof. Ross is the topic of a DoE renewal project on quantum materials. Our initial foray into the hydrothermal chemistry of rare earth titanates has also been very promising and a range of cubic and polar ferroic phases of the light rare earths RE 2 Ti 2 O 7 (RE = La - Pr) in the P2 1 phase. We also discovered an interesting new phase Ce 2 Ti 4 O 11 that can have implications in heavy metal immobilization and storage. along with a series of new rare earth titanates (La 5 Ti 4 O 15 (OH) Sm 3 TiO 5 (OH) 3 and Lu 5 Ti 2 O 11 (OH) with exceptionally complex structures. One interesting sidelight has been high temperature hydrothermal chemistry terbium, including the growth of large crystals of TbO(OH). This is not a new compound but it is the first time it has been grown as large single crystals. The Tb atom density is almost as high as that in Tb 2 O 3 and has a very high Verdet constant (ca. 70), making it a very attractive candidate as a Faraday rotator. Unfortunately it is not in a cubic structure but he material is hard, stable, pure and inexpensive, so should still be an attractive Faraday oscillator. We recently received a patent on this material. We also synthesized K 2 Tb(Ge 2 O 7 ) containing stable octahedral Tb 4+ ions, which appears to be the first example of a well-characterized Tb 4+ complex. Given that Tb 4+ has been proposed as a benign surrogate for more treacherous tetravalent ions such as Cf 4+ and Bk 4+ , we think that Tb 4+ silicates can be a particularly useful study for actinide immobilization and related work. We also began reaction studies with rare earths and both ReO 2 and RuO 2 . These resulted in large single crystals of species like RE 5 Ru 2 O 12 , RE 4 Re 2 O 11 , REReO 4 and RE 2 ReO 5 . Several of these samples have already been sent to ORNL for magnetic and neutron diffraction studies.

Anti-electrostatic hydrogen-bonded tellurate dimers captured and stabilized by crystallization of a bis-iminoguanidinium salt

Anionic Te 2 O 6 (OH) 4 4– dimers have been captured by crystallization of a hydrated salt of glyoxal-bis-iminoguanidinium (GBIG), and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy. The crystal structure reveals anti-electrostatic hydrogen-bonded chains of Te 2 O 6 (OH) 4 4– dimers, consisting of edge-sharing TeO 6 octahedra, stabilized by hydrogen bonding from the GBIG cations and the water molecules included in the crystal. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the presence of TeO 6 octahedra with characteristic Te–O stretching modes at 755 cm -1 and 689 cm -1 , while the observed stretching mode at 3459 cm-1 confirms the presence of axially-bonded hydroxyl groups. Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations confirm the presence of the Te 2 O 6 (OH) 4 4– dimers in the crystalline phase and of the TeO(OH) 5 – monomers in solution.

Crystal Growth, Single Crystal Structure, and Biological Activity of Thiazolo-Pyridine Dicarboxylic Acid Derivatives

Four novel TPDCA derivatives were prepared via a supersaturation method combining TPDCA with water, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), Na(PO 2 H 2 ), and ammonia solution: 2(C 9 H 7 NO 5 S)H 2 O (1), (C 9 H 7 NO 5 S)C 5 H 9 NO (2), (C 9 H 7 NO 5 S)Na(PO 2 H 2 ) (3), and (C 9 H 5 NO 5 S)(NH 4 )2(H 2 O) (4). Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds (1) and (2) crystallize in the monoclinic space groups P2 1 and P2 1 /c, respectively, whereas compounds (3) and (4) crystallize in the triclinic space group P1 - . Weak and moderate hydrogen bonds were detected in the four compounds. In the biological tests, (1) and (3) exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus; in addition, (1) was cytotoxic against leukemia HL-60 cells with the IC 50 value of 158.5 ± 12.5 μM.

Stabilization of N6 and N8 anionic units and 2D polynitrogen layers in high-pressure scandium polynitrides

Abstract Nitrogen catenation under high pressure leads to the formation of polynitrogen compounds with potentially unique properties. The exploration of the entire spectrum of poly- and oligo-nitrogen moieties is still in its earliest stages. Here, we report on four novel scandium nitrides, Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , ScN 5, and Sc 4 N 3 , synthesized by direct reaction between yttrium and nitrogen at 78-125 GPa and 2500 K in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. High-pressure synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in the crystal structures of the nitrogen-rich Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8, and ScN 5 phases nitrogen is catenated forming previously unknown N 6 6 − and N 8 6 − units and$${\!\,}_{\infty }{\!\,}^{2}({{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}_{5}^{3-})$$ ∞ 2 ( N 5 3 − ) anionic corrugated 2D-polynitrogen layers consisting of fused N 12 rings. Density functional theory calculations, confirming the dynamical stability of the synthesized compounds, show that Sc 2 N 6 and Sc 2 N 8 possess an anion-driven metallicity, while ScN 5 is an indirect semiconductor. Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , and ScN 5 solids are promising high-energy-density materials with calculated volumetric energy density, detonation velocity, and detonation pressure higher than those of TNT.

Synthesis, characterization, and high-pressure studies of a 3D berkelium( III ) carboxylate framework material

Here, a berkelium(III) mellitate, Bk 2 [C 6 (CO 2 ) 6 ](H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O, was synthesized and rapidly crystallized by reacting mellitic acid, C 6 (CO 2 H) 6 , and BkBr 3 ·nH 2 O in an aqueous medium. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the compound crystallizes as a three-dimensional framework isostructural with Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) mellitates. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic studies as a function of pressure were performed using a diamond anvil cell and show that the 5f → 5f transitions of Bk 3+ display enhanced hypsochromic shifting when compared to other An(III) mellitates.

Structure, electrical and thermal properties of single-crystal BaCuGdTe 3

Single crystals of the quaternary chalcogenide BaCuGdTe 3 were obtained by direct reaction of elements allowing for a complete investigation of the intrinsic electrical and thermal properties of this previously uninvestigated material. The structure was investigated by high-resolution single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, revealing an orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Cmcm. Although recently identified as a semiconductor suitable for thermoelectric applications from theoretical analyses, our electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient measurements show metallic conduction, the latter revealing strong phonon-drag. Temperature dependent hole mobility reveals dominant acoustic phonon scattering. Heat capacity data reveal a Debye temperature of 183 K and a very high density of states at the Fermi level, the latter confirming the metallic nature of this composition. Thermal conductivity is relatively high with Umklapp processes dominating thermal transport above the Debye temperature. The findings in this work lay the foundation for a more detailed understanding of the physical properties of this and similar multinary chalcogenide materials, and is part of the continuing effort in investigating quaternary chalcogenide materials and their suitability for use in technological applications.

Synthesis, structure, and transport properties of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 clathrate solid solution

In this work, a new clathrate solid solution Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 ( x = 4, 8, 12) was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state annealing method. The crystal structures of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 were determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. This clathrate solid solution crystallizes in the orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I type with 23 crystallographically independent framework sites, eight of them are occupied by Au/Cu and 15 are exclusively occupied by P atoms. The distribution of Au and Cu atoms over these eight framework sites is not random with a clear preference for Au to occupy the largest (Au/Cu)P 4 tetrahedra in the framework. The thermal stability and thermoelectric properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 solid solution were evaluated. Low thermal conductivity was achieved for Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 due to the combination of the host–guest crystal structure with rattling Ba atoms with the presence of heavy Au atoms and substitutional Cu/Au disorder in the clathrate framework.

Magnetism in EuAlSi and the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution solid solution

The magnetic properties of EuAlSi, a compound comprising a honeycomb lattice of Al/Si atoms and a triangular lattice of Eu atoms, are presented. By means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, we find that EuAlSi crystallizes in an AlB 2 -type structure with space group 𝑃⁢6/mmm and unit cell parameters 𝑎 = 4.2229⁢ (10) ⁢Å and 𝑐 = 4.5268 ⁢(12)⁢ Å. Our magnetic measurements indicate that EuAlSi is a soft ferromagnetic material with 𝑇 Curie = 25.8 K. The susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, which allowed us to determine the paramagnetic Curie temperature 𝜃 𝑃 = 36.2 ⁢(1) ⁢K and an effective magnetic moment 𝜇 eff = 8.07 ⁢(1)⁢ µ 𝐵 /Eu. This value is in agreement with the theoretical value of 7.9 µ 𝐵 for Eu 2+ free ion. Moreover, we have prepared the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution, where the atoms in the triangular lattice were systematically exchanged, in order to study the evolution of the collective quantum properties from the ferromagnetic EuAlSi toward the superconducting SrAlSi. Across the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 AlSi solid solution, the unit cell parameters change linearly, following Vegard’s law, and making the system reliable for studying composition dependence of the interplay between the crystal structure and physical properties. As the Sr content increases, i.e., 𝑥 increases, we note a consistent reduction of 𝜇 eff and 𝑇 Curie . Long-range magnetic order in Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi persists up to 𝑥 = 0.95, whereas superconductivity is only observed for samples with 𝑥 > 0.97.

Fermi surface reconstruction due to orthorhombic distortion in the Dirac semimetal YbMnSb 2

A Dirac semimetal with magnetic atoms as constituents delivers an interesting platform to investigate the interplay of Fermi surface (FS) topology, electron correlation, and magnetism. One such family of semimetals is YbMn⁢ 𝑃⁢𝑛 2 (𝑃⁢𝑛 = Sb,Bi), which is being actively studied due to the intertwined spin and charge degrees of freedom. Here, in this study, we investigate the relationship between the magnetic/crystal structures and FS topology of YbMnSb 2 using single crystal x-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, magnetotransport measurements, and complimentary density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Contrary to previous reports, the x-ray and neutron diffraction reveal that YbMnSb 2 crystallizes in an orthorhombic 𝑃⁢𝑛⁢𝑚⁢𝑎 structure with a notable antiphase displacement of the magnetic Mn ions that increases in magnitude upon cooling. As a result of this orthorhombicity, first-principles DFT calculation reveals a reduced Brillouin zone and more anisotropic FS of YbMnSb 2 compared to YbMnBi 2 . Moreover, the hole-type carrier density drops by two orders of magnitude as YbMnSb 2 orders antiferromagnetically, indicating band folding in a magnetic ordered state. In addition, the Landau level fan diagram yields a nontrivial nature of the Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillation frequency arising from the Dirac-like Fermi pocket. These results imply that YbMnSb 2 is an ideal platform to explore the interplay of subtle lattice distortion, magnetic order, and topological transport arising from relativistic quasiparticles.

Crystal structures and comparisons of potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu)

Six potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu) were synthesized by flux-assisted growth in K 2 Mo 3 O 10 . The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The synthesized molybdates crystallize with the orthorhombic Pbcn space group (No. 60). Trendlines for unit-cell parameters were calculated using data from the current study. The unit-cell parameters a and c increase linearly whereas b decreases with larger RE cations, based on crystal radii. The unit-cell volumes increase linearly and the densities decrease linearly with larger RE cations. The average distances between the RE cations and the nearest O atoms increase with larger cations whereas the average distances of Mo—O and K—O do not show specific trends.

Diffraction gratings with two-orders-of-magnitude-enhanced dispersion rates for sub-meV resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy

Diffraction gratings with large angular dispersion rates are central to obtaining high spectral resolution in grating spectrometers operating over a broad spectral range from infrared to soft X-ray domains. The greatest challenge is of course to achieve large dispersion rates in the short-wavelength X-ray domain. Here it is shown that crystals in non-coplanar asymmetric X-ray Bragg diffraction can function as high-reflectance broadband soft X-ray diffraction gratings with dispersion rates that are at least two orders of magnitude larger than those that are possible with state-of-the-art man-made gratings. Additionally, this opens new opportunities to design and implement soft X-ray resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) spectrometers with spectral resolutions that are up to two orders of magnitude higher than what is currently possible, to further advance a very dynamic field of RIXS spectroscopy, and to make it competitive with inelastic neutron scattering. Examples of large-dispersion-rate crystal diffraction gratings operating near the 930 eV L 3 absorption edge in Cu and of the 2.838 keV L 3 -edge in Ru are presented.

Copper Clusters Containing Hydrides in Trigonal Pyramidal Geometry

Structurally precise copper hydrides [Cu 11 H 2 {S 2 P(O i Pr) 2 } 6 (C≡CR) 3 ], R = Ph (1), C 6 H 4 F (2), and C 6 H 4 OMe (3), were first synthesized from the polyhydrido copper cluster [Cu 20 H 11 {S 2 P(O i Pr) 2 } 9 ] with nine equivalents of terminal alkynes. Later, their isolated yields were significantly improved by direct synthesis from [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ](PF 6 ), [NH 4 ][S 2 P(O i Pr) 2 ], NaBH 4 , and alkynes along with NEt 3 in THF. 1, 2, and 3 were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI-MS, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. All three clustershave 11 copper atoms, adopting 3,3,4,4,4-pentacapped trigonal prismatic geometry, with two hydrides inside the Cu 11 cage, the position of which was ascertained by a single-crystal neutron diffraction structure of cluster 1 co-crystallized with a [Cu 7 (H){S 2 P(O i Pr) 2 } 6 ] (4) cluster. Six dithiophosphate and three alkynyl ligands stabilize the Cu 11 H 2 core in which the two hydrides adopt a trigonal pyramidal coordination mode. This coordination mode is so far unprecedented for hydride. The 1 H NMR resonance frequency of the two hydrides appears at 4.8 ppm, a value further confirmed by 2 H NMR spectroscopy for their deuteride derivatives [Cu 11 (D) 2 {S 2 P(O i Pr) 2 } 6 (C≡CR) 3 ]. A DFT investigation allows understanding the bonding within this new type of copper(I) hydrides.

Structure of the Bastnäsite (001) Surface by Crystal Truncation Rod X-ray Diffraction and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics: Implications for Separations of a Rare Earth Ore Mineral

Bastnäsite ((Ce,La)FCO 3 ) is the primary mineral source of light rare earth elements, but its surface structure is not well understood. This presents a major challenge in improving beneficiation strategies. In this work, a synergistic combination of X-ray scattering and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) was used to gain atomistic insight into the interfacial structure of bastnäsite. Surface X-ray scattering was used to measure crystal truncation rods (CTRs) of the bastnäsite (001) surface, a significant crystal face with a previously unknown termination. The best-fit atomic-scale model of the CTR data features a carbonate layer at the surface, which is stabilized by the relaxation of carbonate groups from their bulk structural positions. AIMD simulations predict similar surface relaxations, which are shown to be influenced by the protonation of oxygen atoms at the surface. Evidence of ordered water at the interface is also observed in the best-fit model and AIMD simulations. Further, the presence of a carbonate layer at this dominant crystal surface is significant for improving separation technologies because most commonly used ligands utilize anionic functional groups to chelate metal cations at particle surfaces. Without modification, anionic ligands are expected to have poor affinity for the carbonate-terminated (001) surface.

A Lanthanum‐Filled Carbon–Boron Clathrate

Abstract We report a carbon‐boron clathrate with composition 2 La@B 6 C 6 (LaB 3 C 3 ). Like recently reported SrB 3 C 3 , [1] single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and computational modelling indicate that the isostructural La member crystallizes in the cubic bipartite sodalite structure (Type‐VII clathrate) with La atoms encapsulated within truncated octahedral cages composed of alternating carbon and boron atoms. The covalent nature of the B−C bonding results in a hard, incompressible framework, and owing to the balanced electron count, La 3+ [B 3 C 3 ] 3− exhibits markedly improved pressure stability and is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap predicted near 1.3 eV. A variety of different guest atoms may potentially be substituted within Type‐VII clathrate cages, presenting opportunities for a large family of boron‐stabilized, carbon‐based clathrates with ranging physical properties.

Crystal Structure of Moganite and Its Anisotropic Atomic Displacement Parameters Determined by Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and X-ray/Neutron Pair Distribution Function Analyses

The crystal structure of moganite from the Mogán formation on Gran Canaria has been re-investigated using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray/neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analyses. Our study for the first time reports the anisotropic atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) of a natural moganite. Rietveld analysis of synchrotron XRD data determined the crystal structure of moganite with the space group I2/a. The refined unit-cell parameters are a = 8.7363(8), b = 4.8688(5), c = 10.7203(9) Å, and β = 90.212(4)°. The ADPs of Si and O in moganite were obtained from X-ray and neutron PDF analyses. The shapes and orientations of the anisotropic ellipsoids determined from X-ray and neutron measurements are similar. The anisotropic ellipsoids for O extend along planes perpendicular to the Si-Si axis of corner-sharing SiO4 tetrahedra, suggesting precession-like movement. Neutron PDF result confirms the occurrence of OH over some of the tetrahedral sites. We postulate that moganite nanomineral is stable with respect to quartz in hypersaline water. The ADPs of moganite show a similar trend as those of quartz determined by single-crystal XRD. In short, the combined methods can provide high-quality structural parameters of moganite nanomineral, including its ADPs and extra OH position at the surface. This approach can be used as an alternative means for solving the structures of crystals that are not large enough for single-crystal XRD measurements, such as fine-grained and nanocrystalline minerals formed in various geological environments.
