Hidden frustration in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3

We report a study of the magnetic ground state and crystal electric field (CEF) scheme in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3 . Combined neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the Nd 3+ moments occupying the triangular lattice in this material harbor hidden signs of frustration not detected in typical Curie-Weiss-based parametrization of the frustration index (𝑓 = Θ 𝐶⁢𝑊 /𝑇 𝑁 ). This is evidenced by a zero-field splitting of the Kramers' ground state and first excited state doublets at temperatures far in excess of 𝑇 𝑁 as well as signatures of low-energy fluctuations for 𝑇 ≫ 𝑇 𝑁 . As a result, a suppression of the zero-field ordered moment relative to its field saturation value is observed, and the impacts of this magnetic frustration as well as the coexisting bond frustration in the CdP honeycomb network on the physical properties of NdCd 3 ⁢P3 are discussed.

Decay of the proton-unbound superradiant state in 13 N

Here, the 12 C ( 3 He, 𝑑)⁢ 13 N* reaction is studied in an experiment with a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph, in coincidence with protons detected in silicon detectors near the target. This allows for the observation of angular correlation patterns between the proton transfer and proton decays from populated unbound resonances. A formalism describing the spin polarization of direct reactions is developed to analyze these correlations, and is verified on the known directionally asymmetric decay distributions arising from parity mixing in the 13 N ⁡($\frac{3}{2}$ − , $\frac{5}{2}$ + ) doublet. The same formalism is used to study the decays from the continuum-aligned, broad 3/2 + resonance at 7.9 MeV excitation energy, which arises from superradiant coupling. The observed asymmetric angular correlation patterns are approximately reproduced by adding an “artificial” 3/2 − resonance with strength equal to that of the reaction formalism. This parity-mixing approach serves as a first approximation to a more advanced reaction model of rapid reaction and decay sequences.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for dark matter particles produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is presented. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1 . The analysis is performed in exclusive categories targeting both Lorentz-boosted (merged) and resolved 𝑏 jet pair topologies, covering a wide range of Higgs boson transverse momentum. A statistical combination is made with a previous search using data collected in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 . The observed data agree with the standard model background predictions. Constraints are placed on models predicting new particles or interactions, such as those in the simplified frameworks of baryonic-𝑍′ and 2⁢HDM + 𝑎, where the latter is a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model featuring a heavy pseudoscalar with an additional light pseudoscalar. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for these models. For the baryonic-𝑍′ model, 𝑍′ boson masses below 2.25 TeV are excluded for a dark matter particle candidate mass of 1 GeV. In the 2⁢HDM + 𝑎 model, heavy pseudoscalar masses between 850 and 1300 GeV are excluded for a light pseudoscalar mass of 350 GeV.

Level structure of light neutron-rich La isotopes beyond the 𝑁 = 82 shell closure

Here, the high spin excited states of Lanthanum isotopes 140–143 La, above the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, were populated in fission reactions. The prompt 𝛾-ray transitions were measured using two complementary methods: (a) in coincidence with the isotopically identified fragments produced in the fission of the 238 U + 9 Be system using the Variable Mode Spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, and (b) high statistics threefold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 and fourfold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf using the Gammasphere. This work reports the first identification of a pair of parity doublet structures in 143 La and the new high spin level structure in 140–142 La from prompt 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. The level structures are interpreted in terms of the systematics of neighboring odd-𝑍 nuclei above the 𝑍 = 50 shell closure and large-scale shell model calculations. The present results indicate the presence of stable octupole deformation in 143 La. The excitation energy pattern and their comparison with neighboring isotones, moving away from the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, point towards a transition from single-particle structures to an alternating parity rotational band structure in the La isotopic chain.

Isolated spin ladders in 𝐿⁢𝑛 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 (𝐿⁢𝑛 :La–Nd) metals

Here we present the discovery and characterization of a series of antimonides 𝐿⁢𝑛 2 ⁢Ti 9⁢ Sb 11 (Ln: La–Nd) that exhibit well-isolated, 𝑛 = 2 rare-earth spin ladders. We discuss the structure of these compounds, with a particular focus on the magnetic Ln spin ladders. Nd 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 and Ce 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions and a well-defined doublet ground state, whereas Pr 2 ⁡Ti 9⁢ Sb 11 exhibits a weakly magnetic singlet ground state. Nd 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 is a poor metal with an electrical resistivity of 0.1m⁢Ω cm at 300 K and weak temperature dependence. The thermal conductivity along the ladder exhibits significant field dependence even at 40 K, considerably higher than the magnetic ordering temperature of 1.1 K. Compared to compounds with transition metal spin ladders, the rare-earth elements impart much lower energy scales, making these compounds highly tunable with external stimuli like magnetic fields. In conclusion, the diverse magnetism of the rare-earth ions and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions further contribute to the potential for a wide array of rich magnetic ground states, positioning these materials as a rare example of an inorganic square spin-ladder platform.

Composite quarks and leptons with embedded QCD

We construct a model of quark and lepton compositeness based on an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) gauge interaction that confines chiral preons, which are also charged under the weakly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge group. The breaking of the latter, down to the Standard Model group, is achieved by scalar 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) bound states at a scale in the 30–100 TeV range. The embedding of the QCD gauge group in 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS slows down the running of 𝛼 𝑠 in the UV. We estimate the effects of the strongly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) dynamics on the running of the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge couplings, which likely remain perturbative beyond the compositeness scale of about 10 3 –10 4 TeV, and even above a unification scale. A composite vectorlike lepton doublet acquires a mass in the TeV range probed at future colliders, and an extended Higgs sector arises from six-preon bound states.

Anisotropic magnetism and Kondo-lattice behavior in the frustrated antiferromagnet Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5

Here, we report the synthesis and physical characterization of single-crystalline Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 , a previously unexplored member of the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family. This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure, featuring an anisotropic Ce sublattice composed of zigzag chains along the 𝑐 axis and a distorted kagome-like network in the basal plane. Magnetization measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 ≈ 4.2K with strong magnetic anisotropy and multiple field-induced metamagnetic transitions for fields applied perpendicular to [001], leading to a dome-shaped 𝐻–𝑇 phase diagram. Electrical transport exhibits characteristic signatures of a Ce-based Kondo lattice, including broad resistivity maxima and pronounced field-dependent anomalies in the magnetoresistance and Hall response that track the magnetic phase boundaries. Specific-heat measurements confirm the magnetic transition and show that the full R ⁢ln⁡ 2 entropy expected for a Ce 3+ Kramers doublet is recovered by 20 K, indicating an extended temperature range of magnetic fluctuations consistent with Kondo correlations. Our results establish Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 as a platform within the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family for exploring the interplay of geometric frustration, magnetic anisotropy, and Kondo-lattice physics under applied magnetic fields.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetism in the distorted kagome magnet CePtPb

CePtPb hosts a distorted kagome lattice of Ce 3+ ions, providing a clean platform to investigate how reduced local symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling reshape frustrated magnetism. Magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric effect measurements, combined with a symmetry analysis of the single-ion anisotropy, demonstrate that the local 𝑚⁢2⁢𝑚 site symmetry selects a nearly Ising-like Kramers doublet with easy axes lying within the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane. This results in three distinct in-plane Ising directions and an overall easy-plane anisotropy. The low-energy magnetic response is well captured by a three-sublattice Ising model, which quantitatively reproduces the saturation magnetization for arbitrary in-plane field orientations, including $[110]$ and $[1\bar{⁢1}⁢0]$, as well as the ratio of the field-induced critical fields. For 𝐵∥$[110]$, the phase diagram exhibits two quantum critical points at 𝐵 c⁢1 = 0.25T and 𝐵 c⁢2 = 0.55T, arising from the sequential polarization of the three Ising sublattices. In conclusion, these results reveal that the system develops quasi-one-dimensional spin chains along the 𝑐 axis, emerging from the nominally three-dimensional crystal structure composed of stacked kagome layers, and illustrate how reduced local symmetry can drive effective dimensional reduction in rare-earth Ising magnets.

Magnetic field induced modification of a first-order ferromagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In

Here, we present a comprehensive study of the temperature-and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization, specific heat, and local crystal structure across the first-order ferromagnetic–paramagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In. Anomalies in the magnetocaloric response are observed near 𝐻 ≈ 25 kOe, including changes in field scaling of magnetic entropy, local entropy exponent, and universal master curve, which suggest an apparent weakening of the first-order character of the transition. However, quantitative analysis of the magnetocaloric parameters together with modified Arrott plots demonstrates that the transition remains first order up to at least 70 kOe. Specific-heat measurements reveal a field-induced splitting of the sharp zero-field anomaly into a doublet, providing a natural explanation for the change in the magnetocaloric response. Magnetic-field-dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements show no detectable field-induced changes in the local coordination environment of Eu. We therefore attribute these observations to a magnetic-field-induced two-step transition process in Eu 2 ⁢In.

Quantum-classical hybrid algorithm using an error-mitigating N -representability condition to compute the Mott metal-insulator transition

Quantum algorithms for molecular electronic structure have been developed with lower computational scaling than their classical counterparts, but emerging quantum hardware is far from being capable of the coherence, connectivity, and gate errors required for their experimental realization. Here we propose a class of quantumclassical hybrid algorithms that computes the energy from a two-electron reduced density matrix (2-RDM). The 2-RDM is constrained by $N$-representability conditions, constraints for representing an $N$-electron wave function, which mitigate noise from the quantum circuit. We compute the strongly correlated dissociation of doublet H 3 into three hydrogen atoms. The hybrid quantum-classical computer matches the energies from full configuration interaction to 0.1 kcal/mol, one-tenth of “chemical accuracy,” even in the strongly correlated limit of dissociation. Furthermore, the spatial locality of the computed one-electron RDM reveals that the quantum computer accurately predicts the Mott metal-insulator transition.

High-resolution spectroscopy of neutral Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix

Here, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the absorption and emission spectra of Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix at a resolution of 0.025 nm. Five absorption bands were identified as due to transitions from the 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 2 1 S 0 ground-state configuration to 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 6 p and 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configurations. The two lowest-energy bands were assigned to outer-shell transitions to 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 and 1 P 1 atomic states and displayed the structure of a broad doublet and an asymmetric triplet, respectively. The remaining three higher-frequency bands were assigned to inner-shell transitions to distinct J = 1 states arising from the 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configuration and were highly structured with narrow linewidths. A classical simulation was performed to identify the stability and symmetry of possible trapping sites in the Ne crystal. It showed that the overarching 1 + 2 structure of the high-frequency bands could be predominantly ascribed to crystal-field splitting in the axial field of a 10-atom vacancy of C 4 v symmetry. Their prominent substructures were shown to be manifestations of phonon sidebands associated with the zero-phonon lines on each crystal-field state. Unprecedented for a metal–rare-gas system, resolution of individual phonon states on an allowed electronic transition was possible under excitation spectroscopy which reflects the semiquantum nature of solid Ne. In contrast to the absorption spectra, emission spectra produced by steady-state excitation into the 1 P 1 absorption band consisted of simple, unstructured fluorescence bands.

Rephasing spectral diffusion in time-bin spin-spin entanglement protocols

Generating high-fidelity spin-spin entanglement is an essential task of quantum repeater networks for the distribution of quantum information across long distances. Solid-state-based spin-photon interfaces are promising candidates to realize nodes of a quantum network, but are often limited by spectral diffusion of the optical transition, which results in phase errors on the entangled states. Here, we introduce a method to correct phase errors from quasi-static frequency fluctuations after the entangled state is generated, by shelving the emitters in the excited state to refocus the unknown phase. For quasi-static frequency fluctuations, the fidelity is determined only by the lifetime of the excited state used for shelving, making it particularly suitable for systems with a long-lived shelving state with correlated spectral diffusion. Such a shelving state may be found in Kramers doublet systems such as rare-earth emitters and color centers in Si or SiC interfaced with nanophotonic cavities with a strongly frequency-dependent Purcell enhancement. Furthermore, the protocol can be used to generate high-fidelity entangled spin pairs without reducing the rate of entanglement generation.

Crystal field splitting, local anisotropy, and low-energy excitations in the quantum magnet YbCl 3

We study the correlated quantum magnet YbCl 3 with neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinements of the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization data. The ground-state doublet is well isolated from the other crystal field levels and results in an effective spin-1/2 system with local easy plane anisotropy at low temperature. Cold neutron spectroscopy shows low-energy excitations peaked at 0.5 meV that are consistent with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic correlations.

Crystal fields and magnetic structure of the Ising antiferromagnet Er 3 Ga 5 O 12

Rare-earth garnets are an exciting playground for studying the exotic magnetic properties of the frustrated hyperkagome lattice. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the single ion and collective magnetic properties of the garnet Er 3 Ga 5 O 12 . Using inelastic neutron scattering, we find a crystal-field ground-state doublet for Er 3 + with strong Ising anisotropy along local [100] axes. Magnetic susceptibility and heat-capacity measurements provide evidence for long-range magnetic ordering with T N = 0.8 K , and no evidence for residual entropy is found when cooling through the ordering transition. Neutron powder diffraction reveals that the ground-state spin configuration corresponds to the six-sublattice, Ising antiferromagnetic state ( Γ 3 ) common to many of the rare-earth garnets. However, we also found that μ SR appears to be insensitive to the ordering transition in this material, in which a low-temperature relaxation plateau was observed with no evidence of spontaneous muon precession. The combined muon and neutron results may be indicative of a dynamical ground state with a relatively long correlation time. Despite this potential complication, our work indicates that Er 3 Ga 5 O 12 is an excellent model system for studying the complex metamagnetism expected for a multiaxis antiferromagnet.

Low-energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet Cu 2 OSeO 3 : A coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the “strong tetrahedra” intact (| ℏ ω| < 13 meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the Γ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the R point, and a bounded continuum at the X point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing complex anisotropic intercluster interactions is obtained.

Crystal-field Hamiltonian and anisotropy in KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2

We use neutron scattering and bulk property measurements to determine the single-ion crystal-field Hamiltonians of delafossites KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2 . These two systems contain planar equilateral triangular Er lattices arranged in two stacking variants: rhombohedral (for K) or hexagonal (Cs). Our analysis shows that regardless of the stacking order both compounds exhibit an easy-plane ground-state doublet with large J z =1/2 terms and the potential for significant quantum effects, making them candidates for quantum-spin-liquid or other exotic ground states.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Antichiral spin order, its soft modes, and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Here we report the magnetic structure and spin excitations of Mn 3 Ge , a breathing kagome antiferromagnet with transport anomalies attributed to Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the magnetic order is a k = 0 coplanar state belonging to a Γ 9 irreducible representation, which can be described as a perfect 120 ° antichiral structure with a moment of 2.2(1) μ B /Mn, superimposed with weak collinear ferromagnetism. Inelastic neutron scattering shows three collective Q = 0 excitations at Δ 1 = 2.9 ( 6 ) meV, Δ 2 = 14.6 ( 3 ) meV, and Δ 3 = 17.5 ( 3 ) meV. A field theory of Q ≈ 0 spin waves in triangular antiferromagnets with a 120 ° spin structure was used to classify these modes. The in-plane mode ( α ) is gapless, Δ 1 is the gap to a doublet of out-of-plane spin excitations ( β x , β y ), and Δ 2 , Δ 3 result from hybridization of optical phonons with magnetic excitations. While a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian including exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and single-ion crystal field terms can describe aspects of the Mn-based magnetism, spin-wave damping [ Γ = 25 ( 8 ) meV] and the extended range of magnetic interactions indicate itinerant magnetism consistent with the transport anomalies.
