Technique for extending the frequency range of digital dividers

A technique for extending the frequency range of a presettable digital divider is described. The conventional digital divider consists of several counter stages with the count of each stage compared to a preselected number. When the counts for all stages are equal to the preselected numbers, an output pulse is generated and all stages are reset. For high input frequencies, the least significant stage of the divider has to be reset in a very short time. This limits the frequency that can be handled by the conventional digital divider. This invention provides a technique in which the second least significant and higher stages are reset and the least significant stage is permitted to free-run. Hence, the time in which the reset operation can be performed is increased thereby extending the frequency range of the divider.

Evaluation of wet tantalum capacitors after exposure to extended periods of ripple current, volume 1

The application of tantalum capacitors in the Viking Lander includes both dc voltage and ripple current electrical stress, high temperature during nonoperating times (sterilization), and high vibration and shock loads. The capacitors must survive these severe environments without any degradation if reliable performance is to be achieved. A test program was established to evaluate both wet-slug tantalum and wet-foil capacitors under conditions accurately duplicating actual Viking applications. Test results of the electrical performance characteristics during extended periods of ripple current, the characteristics of the internal silver migration as a function for extended periods of ripple current, and the existence of any memory characteristics are presented.

Mariner 9 extended mission sequence design optimization

This paper discusses the Mariner 9 science sequence design during the extended mission including science objectives, and mission operation and spacecraft constraints. The primary objectives of the extended mission were to complete 100% mapping of the planet, photograph special interest targets, obtain high resolution coverage of prospective Viking landing sites, and to function through the superior conjunction period. The optimization of planet viewing characteristics by moving to different celestial reference stars, and the techniques used to efficiently allocate science links to data taking days are described.

LANDSAT inventory of surface-mined areas using extendible digital techniques

Multispectral analysis of LANDSAT imagery provides a rapid and accurate means of identification, classification, and measurement of strip-mined surfaces in Western Maryland. Four band analysis allows distinction of a variety of strip-mine associated classes, but has limited extendibility. A method for surface area measurement of strip mines, which is both geographically and temporally extendible, was developed using band-ratioed LANDSAT reflectance data. The accuracy of area measurement by this method, averaged over three LANDSAT scenes taken between September 1972 and July 1974, is greater than 93%. Total affected acreage of large (50 hectare/120 acre) mines can be measured to within 1.0%.

Ultraviolet solar identifications based on extended absorption series observed in the laboratory spectrum of Si I

The absorption spectrum of Si I in the wavelength region between 1500 and 1900 A has been photographed at high resolution. The silicon vapor was produced in a 122-cm-long King furnace at 1800 to 2300 C. Forty-two Rydberg series have been observed from the ground state terms 3p(2)3P and 1D to terms associated with the 3pns and 3pnd configurations. All of the series from these configurations with J less than 4 have been extended with the 3pnd 3D(3) levels reaching n = 56. Numerous perturbations have been observed. This laboratory work has provided the basis for extending the identification of silicon lines in the solar spectrum. Nearly all lines found in the laboratory spectrum are also found in rocket spectrograms of the solar chromosphere. More than 300 lines have been attributed to Si I. The excellent correlation between laboratory and solar Si I lines is illustrated.

Structure of the extended solar magnetic field and the sunspot cycle variation in cosmic ray intensity

It is proposed that a relation exists between the extent of interplanetary-magnetic-field sectors and observed variations in cosmic-ray intensity at earth. Changes that take place in the sector magnetic fields and solar polar fields during a sunspot cycle are described. It is argued that a geometrical effect arising from changes in sector-field and polar-field extent during sunspot cycles may be the principal cause of the 11-yr modulation of cosmic-ray intensity observed at earth. The fraction of the heliosphere occupied by sector fields is estimated as a function of time through an average sunspot cycle, the solid angle of the heliosphere occupied by the extended solar polar fields is plotted through the same cycle, and monthly averages of observed absolute intensities of primary cosmic rays with a rigidity greater than 0.5 GV are compared with the plot of polar-field extent. It is found that the average sunspot-cycle variation of the solid angle of the extended polar fields is rather similar to the observed variation in the flux of the cosmic rays considered.

Calculation of transonic flows using an extended integral equation method

An extended integral equation method for transonic flows is developed. In the extended integral equation method velocities in the flow field are calculated in addition to values on the aerofoil surface, in contrast with the less accurate 'standard' integral equation method in which only surface velocities are calculated. The results obtained for aerofoils in subcritical flow and in supercritical flow when shock waves are present compare satisfactorily with the results of recent finite difference methods.

Thermodynamic data report for the Titan/Centaur TC-5 extended mission

The Titan/Centaur vehicle, with the Helios B spacecraft, was launched on January 15, 1976. After the spacecraft was placed into its desired heliocentric trajectory, the Centaur vehicle continued into an extended mission to perform experiments demonstrating increased operational capabilities. The thermal performance of all pertinent Centaur systems and components was evaluated and its capability for satisfactory operation for long duration space coasts was verified. The selected thermal control techniques maintained the Centaur component temperatures within their qualification limits for the entire 8-hour and 22-minute duration of the extended mission.

Extended-performance thruster technology evaluation

Two 30-cm ion thruster technology areas are investigated in support of the extended-performance thruster operation required for the Halley's comet rendezvous mission. These areas include an evaluation of the thruster performance and lifetime characteristics at increased specific impulse and power levels, and the design and evaluation of a high-voltage propellant electrical isolator. Experimental results are presented indicating that all elements of the thruster design function well at the higher specific impulse and power levels. It is shown that the only thruster modifications required for extended-performance operation are a respacing of the ion optics assembly and a redesign of the propellant isolators. Experimental results obtained from three isolator designs are presented, and it is concluded that the design and development of a high-voltage isolator is possible using existing technology.

Extended duration orbiter study: CO2 removal and water recovery

Two electrochemical depolarized carbon dioxide concentrator subsystems were evaluated against baseline lithium hydroxide for (1) the baseline orbiter when expanded to accommodate a crew of seven (mission option one), (2) an extended duration orbiter with a power extension package to reduce fuel cell expendables (mission option two), and (3) an extended duration orbiter with a full capability power module to eliminate fuel cell expendables (mission option three). The electrochemical depolarized carbon dioxide concentrator was also compared to the solid amine regenerable carbon dioxide removal concept. Water recovery is not required for Mission Option One since sufficient water is generated by the fuel cells. The vapor compression distillation subsystem was evaluated for mission option two and three only. Weight savings attainable using the vapor compression distillation subsystem for water recovery versus on-board water storage were determined. Combined carbon dioxide removal and water recovery was evaluated to determine the effect on regenerable carbon dioxide removal subsystem selection.

Outer satellite atmospheres: Their extended nature and planetary interactions

Highly developed numerical models are applied to interpret extended-atmosphere data for the sodium cloud of Io and the hydrogen torus of Titan. Solar radiation pressure was identified and verified by model calculations as the mechanism to explain two different east-west asymmetries observed in the sodium cloud. Analysis of sodium line profile data, suggesting that a Jupiter magnetospheric wind may be responsible for high speed sodium atoms emitted from Io, and preliminary modeling of the interaction of the Io plasma torus and Io's sodium cloud are also reported. Models presented for Titan's hydrogen torus are consistent both with the recent Pioneer 11 measurements and earlier Earth-orbiting observations by the Copernicus satellite. Progress is reported on developing models for extended gas and dust atmospheres of comets.

Modified Iterative Extended Hueckel. 1: Theory

Iterative Extended Huekel is modified by inclusion of explicit effective internuclear and electronic interactions. The one electron energies are shown to obey a variational principle because of the form of the effective electronic interactions. The modifications permit mimicking of aspects of valence bond theory with the additional feature that the energies associated with valence bond type structures are explicitly calculated. In turn, a hybrid molecular, orbital valence, bond scheme is introduced which incorporates variant total molecular electronic density distributions similar to the way that Iterative Extended Hueckel incorporates atoms.

Detection of a new extended soft X-ray source H1538-32 - A possible old supernova remnant

The discovery in the Lupus region of a new, extended soft X-ray source, H1538-32, is reported, having a distance of approximately 340 pc, and a luminosity of 1 to 2 x 10 to the 34th ergs/sec. The observed energy spectrum of the source is well fitted either by a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with Gaunt factor but without line emission, or by a coronal plasma model which includes the X-ray emission lines of various elements and the continuum as outlined by Raymond and Smith (1977). On the basis of the extended nature of the source and its thermal spectrum, it is suggested that H1538-32 may be an old supernova remnant.

A search for extended halos of hot gas in the Perseus, Virgo, and Coma Clusters

Observations of the Perseus cluster by the HEAO 1 satellite have revealed a faint X-ray halo extending at least 2.5 deg from the center and contributing between 5% and 20% to the total luminosity. This may be of nonthermal origin, but it also may be explained in terms of hot gas bound by the gravitational field of the cluster. Statistical uncertainties made it impossible to detect any such halo in the Coma cluster. Observations of the Virgo cluster confirmed the detection by the Ariel 5 satellite of a broad region of faint X-ray emission (core radius 60 arcmin). If the very extended X-ray emission from Virgo is due to hot intracluster gas, the density of this gas is lower than expected from a consideration of gas and galaxy densities in the Perseus cluster.
