Flow field measurements for cylindrical configurations in a hypersonic wind tunnel: Windward and leeward flow fields

Windward and leeward measurements were made for a variety of simulated infinite cylinders exposed to hypersonic streams over an angle of attack from 30 deg to 90 deg. For the range of conditions included in the study, the following conclusions are made: (1) Swept cylinder theory provides a reasonable correlation of the measured laminar heat transfer rates from the plane of symmetry. (2) The boundary layer transition criteria in the plane of symmetry are a function of the transverse curvature. (3) Relaminarization of the circumferential boundary layer for a right circular cylinder was observed at the highest Reynolds number tested. (4) The effect of leeside geometry on the average heat transfer rate can be correlated with a single geometric parameter which is dependent on the location of separation. (5) The relationship of leeward heating to angle of attack is virtually linear for each cross section. (6) No systematic effect of free stream Reynolds number was observed.

The mean photospheric magnetic field from solar magnetograms Comparisons with the interplanetary magnetic field.

Large-scale averages of daily solar magnetograms have been compared by cross-correlation with the interplanetary magnetic sector pattern during a 2.5 yr interval. A significant correlation was found at a lag of about 4.5 days, with the amplitude of the correlation depending on the area included in the magnetogram averages. The highest correlation was found when an area of one quarter of the solar disk was used, which is consistent with the idea that the photospheric features which are to be associated with the interplanetary sector pattern are large scale features.

Investigation of scaling characteristics for defining design environments due to transient ground winds and near-field, nonlinear acoustic fields

In order to establish a foundation of scaling laws for the highly nonlinear waves associated with the launch vehicle, the basic knowledge of the relationships among the paramaters pertinent to the energy dissipation process associated with the propagation of nonlinear pressure waves in thermoviscous media is required. The problem of interest is to experimentally investigate the temporal and spacial velocity profiles of fluid flow in a 3-inch open-end pipe of various lengths, produced by the propagation of nonlinear pressure waves for various diaphragm burst pressures of a pressure wave generator. As a result, temporal and spacial characteristics of wave propagation for a parametric set of nonlinear pressure waves in the pipe containing air under atmospheric conditions were determined. Velocity measurements at five sections along the pipes of up to 210 ft. in length were made with hot-film anemometers for five pressure waves produced by a piston. The piston was derived with diaphragm burst pressures at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 psi in the driver chamber of the pressure wave generator.
