Analysis of truss, beam, frame, and membrane components

Truss components are considered, taking into account composite truss structures, truss analysis, column members, and truss joints. Beam components are discussed, giving attention to composite beams, laminated beams, and sandwich beams. Composite frame components and composite membrane components are examined. A description is given of examples of flat membrane components and examples of curved membrane elements. It is pointed out that composite structural design and analysis is a highly interactive, iterative procedure which does not lend itself readily to characterization by design or analysis function only.-

Relationships between stratospheric clear air turbulence and synoptic meteorological parameters over the western United States between 12-20 km altitude

Procedures for forecasting clear air turbulence in the stratosphere over the western United States from rawinsonde data are described and results presented. Approaches taken to relate meteorological parameters to regions of turbulence and nonturbulence encountered by the XB-70 during 46 flights at altitudes between 12-20 km include: empirical probabilities, discriminant function analysis, and mountainwave theory. Results from these techniques were combined into a procedure to forecast regions of clear air turbulence with an accuracy of 70-80 percent. A computer program was developed to provide an objective forecast directly from the rawinsonde sounding data.

Application of remote sensing for fishery resources assessment and monitoring

The author has identified the following significant results. The distribution and abundance of white marlin correlated with the chlorophyll, water temperature, and Secchi depth sea truth measurements. Results of correlation analyses for dolphin were inconclusive. Predicition models for white marlin were developed using stepwise multiple regression and discriminant function analysis techniques which demonstrated a potential for increasing the probability of game fishing success. The S190A and B imagery was density sliced/color enhanced with white marlin location superimposed on the image, but no density/white marlin relationship could be established.

Gradient optimization and nonlinear control

The book represents an introduction to computation in control by an iterative, gradient, numerical method, where linearity is not assumed. The general language and approach used are those of elementary functional analysis. The particular gradient method that is emphasized and used is conjugate gradient descent, a well known method exhibiting quadratic convergence while requiring very little more computation than simple steepest descent. Constraints are not dealt with directly, but rather the approach is to introduce them as penalty terms in the criterion. General conjugate gradient descent methods are developed and applied to problems in control.

Detection of alteration associated with a porphyry copper deposit in southern Arizona

Computer processing of Landsat MSS data was performed using contrast stretching and band-to-band ratioing. A false color ratio composite picture showed color anomalies which coincided with known areas of alteration on and about Red Mountain. A helicopter survey of the study area was undertaken using a portable field reflectance spectrometer. One hundred fifty-six spectra were obtained in the 0.4 to 2.5 micrometer wavelength region. The spectra were digitized, and contour maps for 24 wavelength intervals were produced; no spectral anomalies were evident for the known altered areas. A contour map produced from the 1.6 and 2.2 micrometer ratio generally delineated the alteration areas. The 1.3, 1.6, and 2.2 micrometer wavelength data were canonically transformed using a transformation empirically derived from discriminant function analysis of altered and unaltered materials for the Goldfield, Nevada region, and a contour map was produced for the first canonical variable. The known areas of alteration were clearly defined on the contour map.

VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) instrumental effects, part 1

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is a method for observation of extragalactic radio sources which appears to have potential for precise long-distance earth surveying, clock synchronization and spacecraft navigation. Many researchers have been working to establish the accuracy of VLBI observations. The intent of the work reported here is to review the principal components of the VLBI instrument in order to estimate and/or bound the systematic error contributions. In this first of a series of articles, the definitions and tools which are needed in order to apply filter transfer-function analysis to the VLBI receiver are established and they are used to estimate the sensitivity of the VLBI receiver to plausible filter variations.

Variation of fan tone steadiness for several inflow conditions

An amplitude probability density function analysis technique for quantifying the degree of fan noise tone steadiness has been applied to data from a fan tested under a variety of inflow conditions. The test conditions included typical static operation, inflow control by a honeycomb/screen device and forward velocity in a wind tunnel simulating flight. The ratio of mean square sinusoidal-to-random signal content in the fundamental and second harmonic tones was found to vary by more than an order-of-magnitude. Some implications of these results concerning the nature of fan noise generation mechanisms are discussed.

A study of Stormsat interactive data analysis facility

Stormsat, a third generation geosynchronous satellite intended for the investigation and forecasting of severe local storms, tropical cyclones and other mesoscale phenomena, could be launched as early as 1982. The paper outlines the interactive data processing and analysis functions which must be performed and presents a possible configuration capable of achieving the demonstration forecast objectives. Important features of the data processing system include (1) interactive extraction of wind, temperature and moisture profiles, cloud structure and precipitation from Stormsat data, and (2) numerical and statistical modeling necessary to provide demonstration forecasts.

Technology requirements for future Earth-to-geosynchronous orbit transportation systems. Volume 2: Technical results

Technologies either critical to performance of offering cost advantages compared to the investment required to bring them to usable confidence levels are identified. A total transportation system is used as an evaluation yardstick. Vehicles included in the system are a single stage to orbit launch vehicle used in a priority cargo role, a matching orbit transfer vehicle, a heavy lift launch vehicle with a low Earth orbit delivery capability of 226, 575 kg, and a matching solar electric cargo orbit transfer vehicle. The system and its reference technology level are consistent with an initial operational capability in 1990. The 15 year mission scenario is based on early space industrialization leading to the deployment of large systems such as power satellites. Life cycle cost benefits in discounted and undiscounted dollars for each vehicle, technology advancement, and the integrated transportation system are calculated. A preliminary functional analysis was made of the operational support requirements for ground based and space based chemical propulsion orbit transfer vehicles.

A jet controlled magnetic referenced attitude control system for spinning payloads

An attitude control system was designed permitting large angle acquisition and alignment of the principle axis of a spinning payload to within 1 degree of the earth's magnetic field. Signals from magnetometer and gyro sensors are fed to the control algorithm to generate commands for the jet thrusters. The algorithm contains a cross axis magnetometer signal to prevent a large angle magnetometer signal to prevent a large angle equilibrium solution. The acquisition will occur within 50 seconds from initial precession and nutation angles of 30 degrees. An electronic spin filter passes signals at spin and nutation frequencies and rejects bias signals due to sensor misalignment and principle axis offset. Describing function analysis and total analog simulation techniques were used. The flight ACS hardware was interfaced with the analog computer simulation for design and verification. The controller has flown on four successful missions.

Nonlinear aerodynamic modeling of flap oscillations in transonic flow - A numerical validation

The regime of validity of a nonlinear aerodynamic force and moment formulation, based on concepts from nonlinear functional analysis and applicable to a transonic airfoil with a deflecting flap, is investigated. A time-dependent finite difference technique is used to evaluate the aerodynamic data of the formulation in terms of specified, characteristic motions. Flap-motion histories are generated from the flap inertial equations of motion, with aerodynamic reactions specified by the moment formulation. The motion histories depicting the cases of decaying and growing flap oscillations are compared with histories generated through simultaneous, coupled solution of the fluid-dynamic equations and flap inertial equations of motion. The range of applicability of the formulation is discussed.

Investigation of several aspects of LANDSAT 4/5 data quality

A second quadrant from the Sacramento, CA scene 44/33 acquired by LANDSAT-4 was tested for band to band resolution. Results show that all measured misregistrations are within 0.03 pixels for similar band pairs. Two LANDSAT-5 scenes (one from Corpus Christi, TX and the other from Huntsville, AL) were also tested for band to band resolution. All measured misregistrations in the Texas scene are less than 0.03 pixels. The across scan misregistration Alabama scene is -0.66 pixels and thus needs correction. A 512 x 512 pixel area of the Pacific Ocean was corrected for the pixel offsets. Modulation transfer function analysis of the San Mateo Bridge using data from the San Francisco scene was accomplished.
