Importance of combining convection with film cooling

The interaction of film and convection cooling and its effect on wall cooling efficiency is investigated analytically for two cooling schemes for advanced gas turbine applications. The two schemes are full coverage- and counterflow-film cooling. In full coverage film cooling, the cooling air issues from a large number of small discrete holes in the surface. Counterflow film cooling is a film-convection scheme with film injection from a slot geometry. The results indicate that it is beneficial to utilize as much of the cooling air heat sink as possible for convection cooling prior to ejecting it as a film.

Gyroscope test of gravitation: An analysis of the important perturbations

Two perturbations, the earth's quadrupole moment and the earth's revolution around the sun, are discussed. Schiff's proposed gyroscope test of gravitation is analyzed, along with the capability of deciphering each separate contribution to the angular velocity of spin precession.

Some important aspects in testing high-modulus fiber composite tubes designed for multiaxial loading

Tubular specimens were potted in metal grips to determine the feasibility of this gripping method in applying multiaxial loads. Strain gage rosettes were used to assess grip transitional strains, through thickness strain variation and strain variations along the tube length and circumference. The investigation was limited to loading 0 deg, + or - 45 deg, and 90 deg graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy tubes in axial tension. Results include modifications made to the grips to reduce transitional strains, illustrations of the tube failure modes, and some material properties. The gripping concept shows promise as a satisfactory technique for applying multiaxial loads to high strength, high modulus fiber composite tubes.

Importance of atmospheric scattering in remote sensing, or everything you've always wanted to know about atmospheric scattering but were afraid to ask.

Discussion of the effects of atmospheric scattering and/or absorption on discrimination between target and background materials in environmental or natural science remote sensing applications. The spectral region considered lies between 0.4 and 3 microns. The results are presented parametrically and include an interesting effect that neighboring materials have on the spectral character of a target as a result of aerosol scattering by atmospheric haze.

Hydrodynamic stability of viscoelastic fluids - Importance of fluid model, overstability, and form of disturbance.

A linearized stability analysis has been applied to a fluid flowing in a gravity field between horizontal planes in Couette flow under conditions such that the temperature of the bottom plane exceeds that of the top. It is shown that, under conditions likely to be encountered with polymer solutions, oscillatory instabilities will not be controlling. Criteria are offered for ascertaining when an analysis based upon a second-order fluid model may be expected to yield physically meaningful results. It is also shown that, for the fluid model considered, critical conditions for stability are not changed when disturbances which vary in the flow direction are substituted for those which are a function of the coordinate transverse to the flow.

Importance of the splanchnic vascular bed in human blood pressure regulation.

Three-part experiment in which five subjects were exposed to lower body negative pressure (LBNP) at -50 mm Hg below the iliac crests. Duration of LBNP to earliest vagal symptoms was 7 to 21 min; all data are expressed as changes from control period to the last measurements before these symptoms. In part I, forearm blood flow (by Whitney gauge) fell 45% during LBNP. In part II, splanchnic blood flow (from arterial clearance hepatic extraction of indocyanine green) fell 32% and splanchnic vascular resistance rose 30%. In part III, cardiac output fell 28%, stroke volume 51%, and central blood volume 21%. Total peripheral resistance and heart rate rose 19% and 52%. Of the reduction in total vascular conductance, decreased splanchnic conductance accounted for approximately 33%; skin plus muscle conductance decreased similarly.
