Performance of an annual combustor designed for a low-cost turbojet engine

Performance tests were conducted on a combustor designed for use in a low-cost turbojet engine. Low-cost features included the use of very inexpensive simplex fuel nozzles and combustor liners of perforated sheet material. Combustion efficiencies at the altitude-cruise and sea-level design points were approximately 94 and 96 percent, respectively. The combustor isothermal total-pressure loss was 8.8 percent at the altitude-cruise-condition diffuser-inlet Mach number of 0.335. The combustor-exit temperature pattern factor was less than 0.3 at the altitude-cruise, sea-level-cruise, and sea-level-static design conditions. The combustor-exit average radial temperature profiles at all conditions were in very good agreement with the design profile. The intense mixing required because of the very high combustor heat-release rate had an adverse effect on ignition capability at altitude windmilling design conditions.

Relevance of ERTS to the State of Ohio

The author has identified the following significant results. A significant result was the fabrication of an image transfer and comparison device. To avoid problems and high costs encountered in manual drafting methods, Battelle staff members have fabricated an inexpensive, yet effective, technique for transferring ERTS-1 analysis displays from the Spatial Data 32-Color Viewer to maps and/or aircraft imagery. In brief, the image transfer-comparison device consists of a 2-way mirror which functions similar to a zoom transfer scope. However, the device permits multiuser viewing and real time photographic recording (35-mm and Polaroid) of enhanced ERTS-1 imagery superimposed over maps and aircraft photography. Thirty-five mm, 70 mm, and 4 in. x 5 in. photographs are taken of 80% of the TV screen of the Spatial Data Density Slicing Viewer. The resulting black and white and color imagery is then used in transparent overlays, viewgraphs, 35-mm and 70-mm transparencies, and paper prints for reports and publications. Annotations can be added on the TV screen or on the finished product.

An economical net solar flux radiometer.

The theory and design of an economical solar flux radiometer readily adaptable to the conventional radiosonde system are presented in response to the need cited by the Atmospheric Radiation Working Group (1971) for the development of an inexpensive light-weight short-wave radiometer sonde. Prototype instrument tests and current modifications are discussed. It is shown that the basic instrument can be easily modified to measure separately the upward and downward directed flux components, in addition to the net flux.

Application of frequency discrimination technique to the analysis of electroencephalographic signals.

A frequency discrimination technique is described which has proved to be effective in measuring the entrainment phenomenon in EEG signals. The validity of a narrow-band-process model used to characterize the signals is demonstrated. The technique (realized by an inexpensive device described elsewhere) is shown to provide a means of studying the synchronization phenomenon as related to alertness.

Holographic storage of multicolor information.

Discussion of the merits of the use of holography for storing multicolor information. Holography is shown capable to provide in a compact, easily duplicated, inexpensive, and readily retrievable manner the storage capacity required for the ever growing amounts of alphanumeric, graphic, continuous tone, color, and black-and-white data generated. Following a definition of the holographic concept, the advantages of holography for multicolor information recording, indexing, registration, and reconstruction are reviewed. Special attention is given to display applications including a multicolor moving-map display, a NASA multifunction display, and an automatic-test-equipment information storage system.

A simple method for studying slow crack growth.

A simple, inexpensive method for studying slow crack growth is described. The method entails measurements of load relaxation at constant displacement using a double torsion specimen. It is demonstrated that the data generated using this technique are in excellent agreement with data obtained using the more complex conventional techniques, for a range of materials - steel, titanium, glass, aluminum oxide, PMMA. These encouraging initial results suggest that additional and more detailed studies using this test procedure are merited.

Radio interferometry depth sounding. II.

Experimental results from an analog scale model and from field tests on two glaciers using radio-frequency interferometry (RFI) are interpreted on the basis of previously described theoretical results. The RFI technique is found to be a practical method with which to study layering in low-loss dielectrics. Three parameters of the upper layer can be estimated from the data: the dielectric constant, the loss tangent, and an estimate of the thickness to a reflector. The method is an inexpensive way to sound ice sheets less than a few hundred meters thick, and could be used to study low-loss layers on the moon.

On the performance of block codes

It is important to define and evaluate measures which incorporate most, if not all, of the quantities affecting the overall system reliability. For the simple types of block codes normally employed in space communication systems, the complexity of the encoder and decoder is of little consequence, since the use of integrated circuit technology allows the construction of the basic components in an inexpensive fashion. The complexity is essentially independent of the particular code-decoder used. The processing speed is generally a function of the type of logic used and the technology in the construction of the integrated circuits.

A simple method for the determination of effective rain cell dimensions and orientation

A simple method is proposed for the determination of effective rain cell dimensions and orientation. Two rain cell models were considered: the circular cell and the elliptical cell. In both models it is assumed that the rain rate is constant throughout the cell, that all cell locations are equally likely, and that the cell dimensions depend upon the rain rate. It is then shown that the effective cell dimensions and orientation may be deduced from rain rate statistics accumulated at two or three closely spaced sites, depending upon the model chosen. The results of this study alone with previous estimates of rain cell dimension indicate that the rain rate measurement points should be spaced on the order of one-half kilometer apart. The proposed method is simple and relatively inexpensive; thus, this approach is readily suited to the study of the dependence of rain cell size and orientation upon climatic region. The resulting rain cell characteristics are of direct value in the prediction of millimeter wavelength attenuation statistics on both single-terminal and diversity earth-space propagation paths as well as point-to-point terrestrial links.

Batteries for storage of wind-generated energy

Cost effectiveness characteristics of conventional-, metal gas-, and high energy alkali metal-batteries for wind generated energy storage are considered. A lead-acid battery with a power density of 20 to 30 watt/hours per pound is good for about 1500 charge-discharge cycles at a cost of about $80 per kilowatt hour. A zinc-chlorine battery that stores chlorine as solid chlorine hydrate at temperatures below 10 C eliminates the need to handle gaseous chlorine; its raw material cost are low and inexpensive carbon can be used for the chlorine electrode. This system has the best chance to replace lead-acid. Exotic alkali metal batteries are deemed too costly at the present stage of development.

Power law time dependence of river flood decay and its relationship to long term discharge frequency distribution

Investigations have continued into the possibility that significant information on stream flow rates can be obtained from aerial and satellite imagery of river meander patterns by seeking a correlation between the meander and discharge spectra of rivers. Such a correlation could provide the basis for a simple and inexpensive technique for remote sensing of the water resources of large geographical areas, eliminating the need for much hydrologic recording. The investigation of the nature of the meander and discharge spectra and their interrelationship can also contribute to a more fundamental understanding of the processes of both river meander formation and drainage of large basins. It has been found that floods decay with an inverse power law dependence on time. The exponent of this dependence varies from river to river and even from station to station along the same river. This power law time dependence makes possible the forecasting of river discharge with an uncertainty of about 5% for as long as a month following the flood peak.
