Tank 48H Phase 1 Initial Testing Using Sodium Permanganate to Decompose Tetraphenylborate: Simulant Studies with Shaker Oven and 2-L Vessel

Tank 48H currently holds legacy material including organic tetraphenylborate (TPB) compounds from the operation of the In-Tank Precipitation process. The large quantity of TPB is not compatible with the waste treatment facilities at SRS and must be removed or undergo treatment to oxidize the organic compounds before the tank can be returned to routine Tank Farm service. Tank 48H currently holds approximately 270,000 gallons of legacy material comprised of decontaminated salt solution, approximately 20,000 kilograms of TPB solids, 3,400 kilograms of sludge solids, and 1,800 kilograms of monosodium titanate (MST).

Core Model Proposal #390: Base Year Update: Initial Updates Preparing for the New Base Year

GCAM's current base year – the last historical year used for calibration – 2015, is considerably lagged compared to the present year, indicating out-of-date assumptions about near-past state of the resources, commodities, and technologies represented in GCAM. This proposal makes data and code changes to enable updating the GCAM base year easier by making the processing code more flexible and robust.

Initial Design Curves for Alloy 709 for an Improved Creep-fatigue Design Method

Creep-fatigue (CF) interaction damage is the primary damage mode for high-temperature structural components subjected to cyclic loading. Over the past several decades, researchers within the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), Section III, Division 5, have focused on developing elevated temperature code rules to ensure conservative structural designs that mitigate CF failure in high-temperature reactors. The existing CF evaluation methodologies in the Code are based on the creep and fatigue damage diagram approach, which is complex and often excessively conservative. The alternative CF evaluation approach proposed here is intended to significantly simplify the evaluation procedure while reducing conservatism in high-temperature component design analysis. This alternative CF evaluation method integrates the elastic–perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis approach with the simplified model test (SMT) CF design concept, leveraging the advantages of both methods. This report presents the preliminary analysis and the approach for developing CF design curves for Alloy 709, utilizing fatigue and CF data generated for the 100,000-hr Code Case to support its qualification to ASME Section III, Division 5 for Class A construction of high temperature reactors. This study is to support the incorporation of Alloy 709 in this alternative CF evaluation method. Recommendations for the remaining work needed to complete the effort are also provided.

Financing Storage as a Transmission Asset: Initial Considerations for an Emerging Use Case

Deploying energy storage as an electric transmission system asset is a unique use case that, despite a body of policy and regulatory support, has received little attention or investment in the United States. The benefits of using storage on the transmission system—and the remaining barriers to that use—have been explored elsewhere. This paper complements that body of research by exploring the finance implications of using energy storage as a transmission asset (SATA). Because transmission infrastructure in the U.S. is generally subject to rate-of-return regulation, in which asset owners receive both a return of their invested capital and a return on that capital, storage assets deployed for that use are not subject to market volatility and have a much lower risk profile overall. That lower risk profile would, in theory, correspond to lower interest rates and other more favorable financing terms relative to a storage project deployed in a market setting. This paper draws from corollaries in other markets to estimate the expected finance impacts of SATA projects.

Design Status and Experimental Strategy for Initial Molten Salt Irradiation Experiments in HFIR

The development and deployment of molten salt reactor (MSR) technologies require experimental capabilities that can evaluate molten fuel salt behavior and structural material performance under representative irradiation conditions. Although modeling and separate effects testing provide important insight, there remains a critical lack of in-pile data that capture the coupled effects of neutron irradiation, temperature, salt chemistry, and time. Informed by lessons learned from historical MSR programs and recent international irradiation efforts, this report presents a structured approach to addressing existing gaps in molten salt irradiation testing using the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). A phased irradiation strategy is presented that incrementally increases experimental complexity while managing cost, risk, and facility constraints. The framework progresses from passive, nonfueled static capsule experiments to fueled, instrumented, and ultimately circulating molten salt systems, providing a pathway for materials screening, mechanistic understanding, and qualification-relevant testing. The report defines a near-term Phase 1 passive capsule concept, associated irradiation conditions, and a conceptual post-irradiation examination strategy. Ongoing modeling, out-of-pile testing, and safety analysis activities are described to support continued capability maturation and to enable future phases of molten salt irradiation testing in support of MSR technology deployment.

A Data Science and Machine Learning Platform Supporting Large Particle Accelerator Control and Diagnostics Applications Final Report: SBIR Initial Phase II DE-SC0022583

The Machine Learning Data Platform (MLDP) is a product providing full-stack support for data science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) applications at particle accelerator and large experimental physics facilities. It supports ML/AI applications from front-end, high-speed acquisition of heterogeneous, time-series data, through data archiving and management, to back-end analysis. The MLDP embodies a “data-science ready” platform for data analysis and ML/AI applications in diagnosis, modelling, control, and optimization of these facilities. It provides data scientists and applications a consistent, datacentric interface to archive data standardizing implementation and deployment of ML/AI algorithms to different operations configurations within the same facility, or between facilities. Being an open-source, public-domain project, the MLDP is intended for broadest possible impact by increasing accessibility and minimizing the required expertise for installation and operation. The MLDP can also be deployed at user facilities for experimental data collection, archiving, and analysis. It is capable of acquisition and archiving of heterogeneous data from experimental equipment (e.g., images, arrays, structures, etc.) along with system hardware configurations (e.g., scalars, tables), control system process variables, and any metadata required for provenance. Thus, the MLDP can manage experimental data through its entire lifecycle, from acquisition and archiving, through analysis and investigation, to release and final publication.
