Model-independent search for the presence of new physics in events including H → γγ with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC

A model-independent search for new physics leading to final states containing a Higgs boson, with a mass of 125.09 GeV, decaying to a pair of photons is performed with 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This search examines 22 final states categorized by the objects that are produced in association with the Higgs boson. These objects include isolated electrons or muons, hadronically decaying $τ$-leptons, additional photons, missing transverse momentum, and hadronic jets, as well as jets that are tagged as containing a $b$-hadron. No significant excesses above Standard Model expectations are observed and limits on the production cross section at 95% confidence level are set. Detector efficiencies are reported for all 22 signal regions, which can be used to convert detector-level cross-section limits reported in this paper to particle-level cross-section constraints.

Performance of the CMS high-level trigger during LHC Run 2

The CERN LHC provided proton and heavy ion collisions during its Run 2 operation period from 2015 to 2018. Proton-proton collisions reached a peak instantaneous luminosity of 2.1× 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , twice the initial design value, at √(s)=13 TeV. The CMS experiment records a subset of the collisions for further processing as part of its online selection of data for physics analyses, using a two-level trigger system: the Level-1 trigger, implemented in custom-designed electronics, and the high-level trigger, a streamlined version of the offline reconstruction software running on a large computer farm. This paper presents the performance of the CMS high-level trigger system during LHC Run 2 for physics objects, such as leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum, which meet the broad needs of the CMS physics program and the challenge of the evolving LHC and detector conditions. Sophisticated algorithms that were originally used in offline reconstruction were deployed online. Highlights include a machine-learning b tagging algorithm and a reconstruction algorithm for tau leptons that decay hadronically.

Measurement of the inclusive $t\bar{t}$ production cross section in the lepton + jets channel in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector using support vector machines

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate $t\bar{t}$ events from backgrounds. The $t\bar{t}$ production cross section is found to be σ $t\bar{t}$ = 168.5 ± 0.7(stat)$^{+6.2}_{-5.9}$(syst)$^{+ 3.4}_{-3.2}$(lumi) pb. In conclusion, the result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into ν e + e − or ν π 0 final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab’s main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01 × 10 20 protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter | U μ 4 | 2 in the mass ranges 10 ≤ m HNL ≤ 150 MeV for the ν e + e − channel and 150 ≤ m HNL ≤ 245 MeV for the ν π 0 channel, assuming | U e 4 | 2 = | U τ 4 | 2 = 0 . These limits represent the most stringent constraints in the mass range 35 < m HNL < 175 MeV and the first constraints from a direct search for ν π 0 decays. EFT triangles in the same-sign WW scattering process at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

We investigate the Beyond Standard Model discovery potential in the framework of the Effective Field Theory (EFT) for the same-sign $WW$ scattering process in purely leptonic $W$ decay modes at the High-Luminosity and High-Energy phases of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The commonly applied procedure of studying the $WWWW$ quartic coupling by testing dimension-8 operators of the EFT one at a time is used in this work. In the considered process there is no experimental handle on the $WW$ invariant mass, and it has previously been shown that the discovery potential at 14 TeV is rather slim. In this paper we report the results calculated for a 27 TeV machine and compare them with the discovery potential obtained at 14 TeV. We find that while the respective discovery regions shift to lower values of the Wilson coefficients, the overall discovery potential of this procedure does not get significantly larger with a higher beam energy.

13 TeV pp collisions, Exotics type, PYTHIA8 generator: tev13pp_pythia8_gkk2radion2gg

Production of Gkk (with different masses) decaying to a radion and Z boson. The radion decays to 2 gluons. Z boson decays to leptons. The events are designed to study kinematics of events. Each file is created with a fixed mass of Gkk and radion, assuming that the mass of M(Gkk)>M(radion)+M(Z0). The mass for Gkk and radion is included as pythia8_gkk2radion2gg_g[M1]_r[M2] where M1 is the mass of Gkk (in GeV), and M2 is the mass of radion (in GeV). 5000 events generated per file. Event record is slimmed to reduce the disk space.
