An Integrated Modeling Study for Coordinated Observations of H, O, OH, and H2O(+) Emissions in the Coma and Ion Tail of the Comet Hale-Bopp

This project has two overall objectives. One objective is to advance our general understanding of both the comet neutral atmosphere and the cometary plasma in the atmosphere and ion tall. The other objective is to obtain specific key information about comet Hale-Bopp that is generally important for Hale-Bopp studies. The primary emphasis in this project is to analyze, in a self-consistent manner, excellent quality high resolution image and line profile observations obtained by the University of Wisconsin for H, O, OH, and H2O+ emissions from the inner coma, outer coma, and ion tail of Hale-Bopp. The information on the spatial and velocity distributions of H2O neutral and ionized photo-products in the inner coma, outer coma, and in the H2O+ ion tail is of substantial and direct importance in the development of an integrated understanding of the complex structure and dynamics of the neutral and plasma species in the atmosphere of Hale-Bopp in particular and comets in general. The H2O production rate of Hale-Bopp is determined and, together with the other information related to the structure and dynamics of the neutral and plasma atmospheres obtained in this study, provide critical information important for a wide variety of research conducted by other groups.

Tropospheric Diagnostic Modeling Studies of PEM-Tropics B Field Data: Investigation of the HOx/NOx/O3 Photochemical System and its Coupling to Sulfur Chemistry

Over the time period of this NASA grant the PI has helped plan and execute the PEM-Tropics B field program. He has also helped organize and co-chair two data workshops which have focused on the detailed analysis of PEM-Tropics B data. His direct participation in these analyses has led to his involvement in 13 manuscripts, nine of which are in print, two in press, and two submitted. A complete list of papers is given.

Tropospheric Modeling Studies of TRACE-P Data: Investigations of the HO(x)/NO(x)/O3 Photochemical System and Its Coupling to Sulfur/Aerosol Species

During the duration of the NASA Grant NCC1-01-24, members of research team consisted of: D. Davis, G. Chen, S. Liu, C. Song, B. DiNunno, J. Nowak, and X. Gong. The major goal of our group effort was that of analyzing data from several NASA field studies and then preparing manuscripts for publication reflecting these analyses. Many of the papers so published were initiated by members of the Davis group; however, for a great many others one or more group members assisted other PI'S in writing their manuscripts. Both types of manuscripts are listed below as representing the final product from this grant.

A Modeling Study of the Spring 2011 Extreme US Weather Activity

The spring of 2011 was characterized by record-breaking tornadic activity with substantial loss of life and destruction of property. While a waning La Nina and other atmospheric teleconnections have been implicated in the development of these extreme weather events, a quantitative assessment of their causes is still lacking. This study uses high resolution (1/4 lat/lon) GEOS-5 AGCM experiments to quantify the role of SSTs and soil moisture in the development of the extreme weather activity with a focus on April - the month of peak tornadic activity. The simulations, consisting of 22-member ensembles of three-month long simulations (initialized March 1st) reproduce the main features of the observed large-scale changes including the below-normal temperature and above-normal precipitation in the Central US, and the hot and dry conditions to the south. Various sensitivity experiments are conducted to separate the roles of the SST, soil moisture and the initial atmospheric conditions in the development and predictability of the atmospheric conditions (wind shear, moisture, etc.) favoring the severe weather activity and flooding.

Comprehensive solar cell modeling and correlation studies

Modeling and correlation studies of solar cells was discussed. Recursive relationships were used to generate solutions at a number of mesh points within the emitter region. Photoexcited hole concentration and built-in electric field were calculated as a function of position. Simulated and experimentally determined I-V curves were shown to have good fit.
