Electrospraying for Precision Delivery of Water and Nutrients for Aeroponics in Microgravity

Developed an enclosure with a custom high voltage nozzle that electrosprays wire "roots" with milliliters (mL) of water in real time by measuring the charge sprayed onto the roots. It uses the spray’s charge to mass from previous measurements with the same nozzle (and the density of water) to convert the display to volume. To deliver water to the nozzle consistently and programmatically, the syringe pump performed the best for experiments because the diaphragm pump created a stuttered flow and the pressurized reservoir’s pressure controller was more complex than the syringe pump’s commercial LabVIEW software that direct controls flow rate.

Understanding the Impact of Long Duration Space Radiation on Biology and Nutrients in Food

No food or bioregenerative life support system (BLSS) is likely to be deployed on Mars prior to being fully vetted on lunar long duration missions. BLSS systems developed for lunar missions will trade well in terms of up mass and volume with prepackaged food for Mars missions, but only if they are reliable. There are significant differences in the gravitational and radiation environments between the moon and Mars, and one key challenging aspect for a BLSS on Mars missions is the extremely long durations. This results in the exposure of seeds, spores, or other dormant stages of organisms to both natural and radiation induced degradation over time frames of two or more years before they might be needed for growth. This can result in poor or no germination and sickly crops. A poorly functioning BLSS represents a threat to crew health. To ensure that a BLSS food production system will function well, we need to understand, at an early stage, the impact of these long missions on the biology. This is important to meet the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) goals.

Rising to the Challenge: Producing and Sustaining a Nutrient-Dense and Climate-Resilient Food Basket for All

Rapidly destabilizing climatic and other biophysical conditions, competition for natural resources, geopolitical conflicts, and market pressures will continue to impose constraints and shocks to the food system, the greatest impacts of which will be felt by nutritionally vulnerable populations. Creating a just, nutritious, and sustainable food system that feeds the world requires a paradigm shift on where, what, and how we grow food while ensuring equitable channels of distribution. Moving forward, we must generate new science, reorient policies, and invest in a suite of environmental, technological, and sociocultural transformations from farm to fork.
