Optical properties of materials at low temperature and their application to optical detection

A lumped model to represent the photodielectric effect is developed. An analog simulation for a sample in a microwave cavity with a static magnetic field is developed. A system to measure continuously the PDE is analyzed. A performance factor to compared PD detectors versus ac photoconductors is computed. The operating conditions are defined for the appropriate noise conditions. The detectivity of the detector is found to be limited by the semiconductor sample noise.

Mineralogical, optical, geochemical, and particle size properties of four sediment samples for optical physics research

X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy were used to investigate the mineralogical and chemical properties of the Calvert, Ball Old Mine, Ball Martin, and Jordan Sediments. The particle size distribution and index of refraction of each sample were determined. The samples are composed primarily of quartz, kaolinite, and illite. The clay minerals are most abundant in the finer particle size fractions. The chemical properties of the four samples are similar. The Calvert sample is most notably different in that it contains a relatively high amount of iron. The dominant particle size fraction in each sample is silt, with lesser amounts of clay and sand. The indices of refraction of the sediments are the same with the exception of the Calvert sample which has a slightly higher value.

Optical and X-ray observations of faint quasars in an optically selected sample

The confirmation of six quasars from spectrographic observations made in 1981 using the Multiple Mirror Telescope, and the characterization of 10 quasars from 1980 Einstein-Observatory X-ray observations (using both imaging proportional counter and high-resolution imager), are reported. The candidates had been selected by Formiggini et al. (1980) in a 1.72-sq-deg region centered on 13h 6 deg, on the basis of ultraviolet excess and a limiting B magnitude of 19.20. A total sample of 10 UV-excess quasars of this magnitude has now been confirmed, for an integral surface density of 5.8 + or - 1.8 per sq deg. Confirmation of three objects from another sample with B less than 18.25 as quasars yielded a surface density of 0./59 + or - 0.13 per sq deg at that magnitude. Data from the complete samples were used to compute the number-flux relation, found to be described by a power law with a 2.25 index for quasars with B between 17.0 and 19.2. From the X-ray observations it was determined that quasars with z less than 2.2 and B less than 19.20 contribute about 15 percent to the cosmic 2-keV background.

Optical matching for fiber optic spectroscopy

Single silica fibers of the type developed for communications are useful in the design of astronomical spectrographs. They can be used to couple light from many objects over a wide field to a single spectrograph, or to eliminate wavelength errors from image motion and gravitational flexure. For many applications it will be advantageous to use small lenses to make the most efficient coupling into and out of a fiber. If the telescope pupil is imaged on the fiber core, an efficient coupling can be made that preserves image size over a certain range. This method is demonstrated by a laboratory test using sapphire spheres as coupling lenses.

Optical generation of a circular harmonic filter for rotation and translation invariant optical pattern recognition

A new method to generate a circular harmonic filter with both rotation and translation invariance is described, which is based on a phase-shifted double-exposure (PSDE) technique. An expression for the peak correlation intensity at the origin for the correlation plane as a function of target orientation for the PSDE filter is derived. Experimental results confirming the theoretical predictions are provided.

Estimation of optical flow in airborne electro-optical sensors by stochastic approximation

The essence of motion or range estimation by passive electrooptical means is the ability to determine the correspondence of picture elements in pairs of image frames and to estimate their coordinates and their disparity (relative shifts) in the image plane of an electrooptical imaging sensor. The disparity can be in successive frames due to self-motion or in simultaneous frames of a stereo pair. A key issue is to provide these estimates on-line. This paper describes the theoretical background of such an interframe shift estimator. It is based on a stochastic gradient algorithm, specifically implementing a form of stochastic approximation, which can achieve rapid convergence of the shift estimate. Analytical and numerical simulation examples for random texture and isolated features validate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the estimator.

Multiple-mode reconfigurable electro-optic switching network for optical fiber sensor array

This paper reports the first switching network compatible with multimode fibers. A one-to-many cascaded reconfigurable interconnection was built. A thin glass substrate was used as the guiding medium which provides not only higher coupling efficiency from multimode fiber to waveguide but also better tolerance of phase-matching conditions. Involvement of a total-internal-reflection hologram and multimode waveguide eliminates interface problems between fibers and waveguides. The DCG polymer graft has proven to be reliable from -180 C to +200 C. Survivability of such an electrooptic system in harsh environments is further ensured. LiNbO3 was chosen as the E-O material because of its stability at high temperatures (phase-transition temperature of more than 1000 C) and maturity of E-O device technology. Further theoretical calculation was conducted to provide the optimal interaction length and device capacitance.

An Improved Solution for Integrated Array Optics in Quasi-Optical mm and Submm Receivers: the Hybrid Antenna

The hybrid antenna discussed here is defined as a dielectric lens-antenna as a special case of an extended hemi-spherical dielectric lens that is operated in the diffraction limited regime. It is a modified version of the planar antenna on a lens scheme developed by Rutledge. The dielectric lens-antenna is fed by a planar-structure antenna, which is mounted on the flat side of the dielectric lens-antenna using it as a substrate, and the combination is termed a hybrid antenna. Beam pattern and aperture efficiency measurements were made at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths as a function of extension of the hemi- spherical lens and different lens sizes. An optimum extension distance is found experimentally and numerically for which excellent beam patterns and simultaneously high aperture efficiencies can be achieved. At 115 GHz the aperture efficiency was measured to be (76 4 +/- 6) % for a diffraction limited beam with sidelobes below -17 dB. Results of a single hybrid antenna with an integrated Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) detector and a broad-band matching structure at submillimeter wavelengths are presented. The hybrid antenna is diffraction limited, space efficient in an array due to its high aperture efficiency, and is easily mass produced, thus being well suited for focal plane heterodyne receiver arrays.

Application of Novel Nonlinear Optical Materials to Optical Processing

We describe wave mixing and interactions in nonlinear photorefractive polymers and disodium flourescein. Higher diffracted orders yielding forward phase conjugation can be generated in a two-wave mixing geometry in photorefractive polymers, and this higher order can be used for image edge enhancement and correlation. Four-wave mixing and phase conjugation is studied using nonlinear disodium floureschein, and the nature and properties of gratings written in this material are investigated.
