Despite progress in small scale electrocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) using a rotating ring-disk electrode, further work is needed to develop a non-toxic, selective, and stable O 2 -to-H 2 O 2 electrocatalyst for realizing continuous on-site production of neutral hydrogen peroxide. We report ultrasmall and monodisperse colloidal PtP 2 nanocrystals that achieve H 2 O 2 production at near zero-overpotential with near unity H 2 O 2 selectivity at 0.27 V vs. RHE. Density functional theory calculations indicate that P promotes hydrogenation of OOH* to H 2 O 2 by weakening the Pt-OOH* bond and suppressing the dissociative OOH* to O* pathway. Atomic layer deposition of Al 2 O 3 prevents NC aggregation and enables application in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a maximum r(H 2 O 2 ) of 2.26 mmol h -1 cm -2 and a current efficiency of 78.8% even at a high current density of 150 mA cm -2 . Catalyst stability enables an accumulated neutral H 2 O 2 concentration in 600 mL of 3.0 wt% (pH = 6.6).
Alloying is a powerful tool that can improve the electrocatalytic performance and viability of diverse electrochemical renewable energy technologies. Herein, we enhance the activity of Pd-based electrocatalysts via Ag-Pd alloying while simultaneously lowering precious metal content in a broad-range compositional study focusing on highly comparable Ag-Pd thin films synthesized systematically via electron-beam physical vapor co-deposition. Cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M KOH shows enhancements across a wide range of alloys; even slight alloying with Ag (e.g. Ag 0.1 Pd 0.9 ) leads to intrinsic activity enhancements up to 5-fold at 0.9 V vs. RHE compared to pure Pd. Based on density functional theory and x-ray absorption, we hypothesize that these enhancements arise mainly from ligand effects that optimize adsorbate–metal binding energies with enhanced Ag-Pd hybridization. This work shows the versatility of coupled experimental-theoretical methods in designing materials with specific and tunable properties and aids the development of highly active electrocatalysts with decreased precious-metal content.
A PtCo alloy catalyst was prepared by thermal diffusion of Co encapsulated with thin N-doped carbon layers on graphitic carbon into a Pt lattice (PtCo/NGC). The Co diffused up to the near-Pt surface and resulted in an intermetallic PtCo structure without the leaching process. The intermetallic PtCo structure thermally treated under optimized conditions showed 3-fold higher mass activity than the commercial Pt/C. The potential and maximum power density loss of PtCo/NGC after 30 000 potential cycles were 34 mV and 11%, respectively, which indicated that the PtCo/NGC was remarkably stable when compared to commercial Pt/C and commercial PtCo/GC catalysts. The enhanced catalytic performance and stability of the PtCo/NGC catalyst were attributed to the formation of an intermetallic structure that alleviated the Pt oxidation and Co dissolution. The outstanding performance and stability qualify the ordered intermetallic PtCo/NGC to be a promising cathode catalyst for the commercialization of fuel cells.
