5-2428: Fracture Permeability Impact on Seismic Slip Behavior

Our goal is to develop, apply and validate a holistic thermal, hydrologic, mechanical, and chemical (THMC) workflow that includes evaluation of induced seismic slip in EGS reservoirs. We will integrate experimental and modeling approaches to reduce parameter uncertainty and better predict/mitigate seismic hazard at EGS sites. Our novel approach couples 3D physics-based earthquake simulations with THMC models (THMc+E). This capability will enable improve engineering decisions at Utah-FORGE and move EGS operations toward repeatable, robust, economically viable, and socially accepted development. For example, our THMC+E models will predict circulation scenarios and related seismic hazard for a suite of flow rates and under uncertainty, thus enabling evaluation of optimal circulation strategy. Laboratory experiments will be performed to constrain key model parameters and Bayesian techniques will provide a probabilistic evaluation of parameters used in models. THMC+E simulations will enable exploration various circumstances that may hinder EGS success and develop mitigation strategies.

5-2428: Coupled Investigation of Fracture Permeability Impact on Reservoir Stress and Seismic Slip Behavior [Slides]

Our goal is to develop, apply and validate a holistic thermal, hydrologic, mechanical, and chemical (THMC) workflow that also includes evaluation of induced seismic slip in EGS reservoirs. We will integrate experimental and modelling approaches to reduce parameter uncertainty and better integrate friction constitutive laws for faults to improve our ability to predict and mitigate seismic hazard at Utah FORGE and future EGS sites. We propose a novel approach that incorporates 3D physics-based Earthquake simulations in THMC models, using lab measurements of friction parameters, herein referred to as “THMC+E” models. These simulations will enable exploration of various circumstances that may hinder EGS success and develop mitigation strategies.

Data From: Simulating bioclogging effects on dynamic riverbed permeability and infiltration, Water Resources Research

We collected a time series of Russian River infiltration rates to parameterize stochastic model development of infiltration conditions as a function of bioclogging. The time series of infiltration were collected from the Russian River Riverbank Filtration site located in Sonoma County California. Infiltration datasets are shown in units of m/day and were obtained using a seepage meter in 2012. To address the combined effects of bioclogging and disconnection on infiltration, we developed numerical representations of bioclogging processes based on these datasets using a within a one-dimensional, variably saturated flow model representing losing-connected and losing-disconnected rivers. All models and bioclogging formulations were used to create synthetic test cases for bioclogging. This research was supported by the Jane Lewis Fellowship from the University of California, Berkeley, the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA), the Roy G. Scalable Simulation of Pressure Gradient-Driven Transport of Rarefied Gases in Complex Permeable Media Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

Accurate representations of slip and transitional flow regimes present a challenge in the simulation of rarefied gas flow in confined systems with complex geometries. In these regimes, continuum-based formulations may not capture the physics correctly. This work considers a regularized multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method with mixed Maxwellian diffusive and halfway bounce-back wall boundary treatments to capture flow at high Kn. The simulation results are validated against atomistic simulation results from the literature. We examine the convergence behavior of LB for confined systems as a function of inlet and outlet treatments, complexity of the geometry, and magnitude of pressure gradient and show that convergence is sensitive to all three. The inlet and outlet boundary treatments considered in this work include periodic, pressure, and a generalized periodic boundary condition. Compared to periodic and pressure treatments, simulations of complex domains using a generalized boundary treatment conserve mass but require more iterations to converge. Convergence behavior in complex domains improves at higher magnitudes of pressure gradient across the computational domain, and lowering the porosity deteriorates the convergence behavior for complex domains.

Carbon dioxide and polymer compositions for permeability control and sealing

A method of treating a material to achieve at least one of reducing surface wettability of the material or reducing fluid transport through the material includes exposing the material to a composition including a solution of a polymer portion and carbon dioxide for a period of time. The polymer portion includes at least one of a polyfluoroacrylate or a copolymer of a fluoroacrylate and a comonomer. A pressure of the composition is maintained above the cloud point of the polymer portion at a concentration thereof in the carbon dioxide for the period of time.
