Weapon Material Program: FY24 Annual Report

The Weapon Material Program (WMP) framework was started in July of Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, along with other Mission Support organizations. The first year was about building the organization with the right people, identifying needs, and developing a vision for expectations. It was also a year to move forward with new equipment and technology for weapon material processes. With numerous improvements, WMP is building world-class systems for production, warehousing, and analytical testing. FY 2023 was a year of development. The WMP was a new organization defining its identity, its focus, and its mission. At the end of FY 2023, WMP evaluated its current position and its immediate needs along with its future goals. The entire organization set out on this FY 2024 journey to success. The lack of funding, staffing, and visibility dramatically impacted weapon material operations, testing, and qualifications. This neglect required numerous areas to be addressed and improvement plans to be developed and implemented. WMP processes, procedures, and overall business operations were dramatically in need of updating, revision, and formal documentation. This included all areas: technology, equipment, facility modifications/upgrades, and testing improvements. To ensure organizational improvement and forward momentum in FY 2024, WMP executed a multi-faceted strategic vision. Action items included the following: • Filling open positions with capable personnel who would contribute to a more robust organization • Establishing more formal operations and problem-solving techniques • Improving departmental procedures to align with expanding scope • Improving training • Establishing collaboration meetings with other departments/organizations • Focusing on the importance of identifying and mitigating concerns with At-Risk Materials (@RM) • Leading modernization eff orts for Blending and Packaging (B&P) We are on the verge of a transformational improvement in all of our processes in support of the mission. The following area achievements outlined in this report reflect the hard work toward achieving the goal of “being the material Subject Matter Experts in the nuclear enterprise”.

A Multi-Model, Multi-Scale Research Program in Stressors, Responses, and Coupled Systems Dynamics at the Energy-Water-Land Nexus and for Concentrated, Interdependent Infrastructures: Toward Next Generation Capabilities in Integrated Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability (I-IAV) Modeling and a Community of Practice

The goal of this research program was to build a next generation integrated suite of science-driven modeling and analytic capabilities, and a more expanded and connected community of practice, for analyses of the stressors, impacts, adaptations and vulnerabilities of global and regional change. The emphasis was on understanding energy-water-land interactions and feedbacks and interdependent infrastructures at appropriate regional and temporal scales. Although the scope spans many complex facets of data, modeling, and analysis, as well as scales appropriate for integrated impacts and adaptation research, the focus of this effort was the development of multi-model, multi-scale capabilities spanning the domains of Multi-Sector Dynamics (MSD) models; Impact, Adaptation, and Vulnerability (IAV) models; and Earth System Models (ESMs).

Fermilab Italian Student Program (Final Report)

I participated to the 2019 Fermilab Italian Student Program under the supervision of Anadi Canepa and Lorenzo Uplegger. I worked with the Fermilab research group that is involved with the R&D of the CMS Outer Tracker. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a a general-purpose detector located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's most powerful particle accelerator. In the next years LHC will undergo the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade, which will bring its luminosity from 1 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 to 1.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . This increase in luminosity will require an upgrade of CMS as well, in order to comply with the augmented rate of particles which will cross the detector. The CMS tracker is a detector, composed of various modules made of silicon pixel trackers and silicon strip trackers, whose aim is to reconstruct the trajectories of the particles produced by the collisions in LHC. The tracker is ideally divided in Inner Tracker and Outer Tracker. The HL-LHC upgrade put important challenges in the designing of the tracker. It will have to withstand the irradiation of a large fluence of particles, without suffering a too severe deterioration of its performance. In addition to this, in order to comply with the increased rate of events that CMS will need to detect, the tracker will be exploited for triggering at the fully hardware Level 1 Trigger, in contrast to the current tracker, whose data are only used for the software High-Level Trigger. This feature is managed by the "stub logic", which will be explained in chapter 2. During the months of August and September at Fermilab I carried out the data analysis of three test beam runs performed in the last two years on the 2S Outer Tracker Minimules. The 2S Minimoule consists of two silicon strip trackers placed one upon the other with the strips kept parallel.

Demonstration of the surveillance test article for an advanced reactor surveillance test program

Operational environments in generation IV reactors involve corrosive and irradiative conditions at elevated temperatures. Typical reactor operations consist of transients which impose cyclic loads on reactor components. These cyclic loads, combined with corrosive and irradiative environments, result in synergistic degradation of component materials. However, limited data exists on the coupled damage effects on materials for reactor environments. While the surrogate material surveillance concept has been used in light water reactors to assess irradiation damage, existing material surveillance technologies are not suitable for in-situ monitoring of coupled material degradation. The materials surveillance program focuses on material degradation management and the estimation of remaining life of reactor components through surveillance test articles. This paper presents the design and analysis methodology of a bi-metal surveillance test article, which uses difference in thermal expansion coefficient between two metals to induce in-situ cyclic loads. This report presents the work conducted in FY 25, to test the surveillance test article in air and salt environments. These test specimens were evaluated after thermal cycle exposure and remaining life is measured through creep test.
