Study of and proposals for the correction of errors in a radar ranging device designed to facilitate docking of a teleoperator maneuvering system

A frequency modulated continuous wave radar system was developed. The system operates in the 35 gigahertz frequency range and provides millimeter accuracy range and range rate measurements. This level of range resolution allows soft docking for the proposed teleoperator maneuvering system (TMS) or other autonomous or robotic space vehicles. Sources of error in the operation of the system which tend to limit its range resolution capabilities are identified. Alternative signal processing techniques are explored with emphasis on determination of the effects of inserting various signal filtering circuits in the system. The identification and elimination of an extraneous low frequency signal component created as a result of zero range immediate reflection of radar energy from the surface of the antenna dish back into the mixer of the system is described.

Comparative evaluation of three shaft seals proposed for high performance turbomachinery

Experimental pressure profiles and leak rate characteristics for three shaft seal prototype model configurations proposed for the space shuttle turbopump were assessed in the concentric and fully eccentric, to point of rub, positions without the effects of rotation. The parallel-cylindrical configuration has moderate to good stiffness with a higher leak rate. It represents a simple concept, but for practical reasons and possible increases in stability, all such seals should be conical-convergent. The three-stepdown-sequential, parallel-cylindrical seal is converging and represents good to possible high stiffness when fluid separation occurs, with a significant decrease in leak rate. Such seals can be very effective. The three-stepdown-sequential labyrinth seal of 33-teeth (i.e., 12-11-10 teeth from inlet to exit) provides excellent leak control but usually has very poor stiffness, depending on cavity design. The seal is complex and not recommended for dynamic control.

A proposed new method for damping relaxation oscillations in laser diodes

A new concept of damping relaxation oscillations in injection laser diodes is described. This method involves the operation of the laser as a part of a bipolar transistor, and the damping is accomplished by reducing the carrier lifetime in the laser active region only at frequencies near resonance. The advantage of the proposed method is that the damping mechanism does not affect the laser operation at any other frequency range.

A comparison of limb plethysmograph systems proposed for use on the Space Shuttle

Comparisons of a Whitney mercury-filled double-stranded strain gauge with two plethysmographs proposed for Shuttle use - an ultrasound and an impedance plethysmograph - were performed on 20 subjects. An occlusive thigh pressure cuff, inflated to 50 mm Hg, caused partial venous occlusion and subsequent blood pooling distal to the cuff. The average maximum volume changes observed in the Whitney/ultrasound test were 2.07% and 3.35%, respectively, and 2.12% and 2.53% for the Whitney/Impedance comparison. Applying the ratio of the maximum volume changes to the gain of each test system caused the impedance and ultrasound volume change determinations to be essentially identical to the Whitney gauge. The three different limb parameters measured result in significant magnitude differences but the three systems track their respective changes identically.

Proposal for the measuring molecular velocity vector with single-pulse coherent Raman spectroscopy

Methods for simultaneous measurements of more than one flow velocity component using coherent Raman spectroscopy are proposed. It is demonstrated that using a kilowatt broad-band probe pulse (3-30 GHz) along with a megawatt narrow-band pump pulse (approximately 100 MHz), coherent Raman signal resulting from a single laser pulse is sufficient to produce a high-resolution Raman spectrum for a velocity measurement.

Comparison of low-altitude wind-shear statistics derived from measured and proposed standard wind profiles

Wind shear statistics were calculated for a simulated set of wind profiles based on a proposed standard wind field data base. Wind shears were grouped in altitude in altitude bands of 100 ft between 100 and 1400 ft and in wind shear increments of 0.025 knot/ft. Frequency distributions, means, and standard deviations for each altitude band were derived for the total sample were derived for both sets. It was found that frequency distributions in each altitude band for the simulated data set were more dispersed below 800 ft and less dispersed above 900 ft than those for the measured data set. Total sample frequency of occurrence for the two data sets was about equal for wind shear values between +0.075 knot/ft, but the simulated data set had significantly larger values for all wind shears outside these boundaries. It is shown that normal distribution in both data sets neither data set was normally distributed; similar results are observed from the cumulative frequency distributions.

Simulation studies of proposed observing systems and their impact on numerical weather prediction

A series of realistic simulation studies is being conducted as a cooperative effort between the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the National Meteorological Center (NMC), and the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences (GLAS) to provide a quantitative assessment of the potential impact of proposed observation systems on large scale numerical weather prediction. A special objective of this project is to avoid the unrealistic character of earlier simulation studies.

Irrigated rice area estimation using remote sensing techniques: Project's proposal and preliminary results

The development of a methodology for annual estimates of irrigated rice crop in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, using remote sensing techniques is proposed. The project involves interpretation, digital analysis, and sampling techniques of LANDSAT imagery. Results are discussed from a preliminary phase for identifying and evaluating irrigated rice crop areas in four counties of the State, for the crop year 1982/1983. This first phase involved just visual interpretation techniques of MSS/LANDSAT images.

An experiment proposed and set up by the readers will be flying on board the Shuttle; these are the rules of the game; the experiments of others

The 400th round trip ticket to space via the space shuttle is booked in the name of an Italian journal. Students from that country are offered an opportunity to propose an experiment for NASA's Get Away Special program. The dimensional characteristics of the container, as specified by NASA, are given as well as limitations of weight, volume, diameter, and height for the experiment. The types of experiments in the OSS-1 payload and their operation are described.

A proposed origin for palimpsests and anomalous pit craters on Ganymede and Callisto

The hypothesis that palimpsests and anomalous pit craters are essentially pristine crater forms derived from high-velocity impacts and/or impacts into an ice crust with preimpact temperatures near melting is explored. The observational data are briefly reviewed, and an impact model is proposed for the direct formation of a palimpsest from an impact when the modification flow which produces the final crater is dominated by 'wet' fluid flow, as opposed to the 'dry' granular flow which produces normal craters. Conditions of 'wet' modification occur when the volume of impact melt remaining in the transient crater attains a volume comparable to the transient crater. The normal crater-palimpsest transition is found to occur for sufficiently large impacts or sufficiently fast impactors. The range of crater diameters and morphological characteristics inferred from the impact model is consistent with the observed characteristics of palimpsests and anomalous pit craters.

Low altitude wind shear statistics derived from measured and FAA proposed standard wind profiles

Wind shear statistics were calculated for a simulated data set using wind profiles proposed as a standard and compared to statistics derived from measured wind profile data. Wind shear values were grouped in altitude bands of 100 ft between 100 and 1400 ft, and in wind shear increments of 0.025 kt/ft between + or - 0.600 kt/ft for the simulated data set and between + or - 0.200 kt/ft for the measured set. No values existed outside the + or - 0.200 kt/ft boundaries for the measured data. Frequency distributions, means, and standard deviations were derived for each altitude band for both data sets, and compared. Also, frequency distributions were derived for the total sample for both data sets and compared. Frequency of occurrence of a given wind shear was about the same for both data sets for wind shears, but less than + or 0.10 kt/ft, but the simulated data set had larger values outside these boundaries. Neglecting the vertical wind component did not significantly affect the statistics for these data sets. The frequency of occurrence of wind shears for the flight measured data was essentially the same for each altitude band and the total sample, but the simulated data distributions were different for each altitude band. The larger wind shears for the flight measured data were found to have short durations.

Proposed structures for poorly characterized phases in C2M carbonaceous chondrite meteorites

A recent investigation of C2M carbonaceous chondrite meteorite matrices using electron microscopy and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) has provided data on the structure and chemistry of Poorly Characterized Phases (PCP). It is suggested that a dominant matrix variety (10 A PCP) has a structure equivalent to iron-rich tochinilite (6Fe0.9S5/Fe, Mg//OHO2/), which consists of coherently intrastratified mackinawite and brucite sheets. In addition, it is proposed that 17 A PCP is a commensurate intergrowth of serpentine and tochinilite layers. Various forms of PCP observed in carbonaceous chondrites appear to be intergrowths of tochinilite, serpentine, and tochinilite-serpentine minerals.

Study Proposal for the Possible Use of ISS as an Aerodynamic Facility for Aerospace Applications

In order to determine the correct design parameters for an orbital transfer vehicle (OTV) to be used in conjunction with the envisaged space station system (SSS) it is essential to know the aerodynamic coefficients in the translational flow regime of the Earth's atmosphere at approximately 80 to 200 km. Because of the inherent difficulties relating to the duplication of the abovesaid translational flow regime in a ground based aerodynamic facility, another means of making this determination had to be developed. The proposed solution is the exploitation of the tether satellite system (TSS). By employing it as a spaceborne variable low density wind tunnel, the TSS appears to be a very appealing tool for such gas dynamic research.

The Sondrestrom radar: Progress and proposed upgrades for ST work

The capabilities and limitations of the Sondrestrom Radar for stratosphere-troposphere ST observations were previously presented. Recent progress and proposed upgrades are summarized. During the first year of operation (April 1983 to April 1984) there was only one ST experiment, mainly with the objective of evaluating the site and determining that the hardare and software were still operational after the radar's move from Alaska. The Sondrestrom site has about the same degree of ground clutter as the former Chatanika site and the data appear to be similar. The radar's operation continues to be incoherent-scatter observations of the ionosphere. The main radar parameters are summarized.
