Searches for physics beyond the standard model with the M T2 variable in hadronic final states with and without disappearing tracks in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Two related searches for phenomena beyond the standard model (BSM) are performed using events with hadronic jets and significant transverse momentum imbalance. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The first search is inclusive, based on signal regions defined by the hadronic energy in the event, the jet multiplicity, the number of jets identified as originating from bottom quarks, and the value of the kinematic variable $M_\mathrm{T2}$ for events with at least two jets. For events with exactly one jet, the transverse momentum of the jet is used instead. The second search looks in addition for disappearing tracks produced by BSM long-lived charged particles that decay within the volume of the tracking detector. No excess event yield is observed above the predicted standard model background. This is used to constrain a range of BSM models that predict the following: the pair production of gluinos and squarks in the context of supersymmetry models conserving $R$-parity, with or without intermediate long-lived charginos produced in the decay chain; the resonant production of a colored scalar state decaying to a massive Dirac fermion and a quark; or the pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks each decaying to a neutrino and a top, bottom, or light-flavor quark. In most of the cases, the results obtained are the most stringent constraints to date.

Double-pion electroproduction off protons in deuterium: Quasifree cross sections and final-state interactions

Here, the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for quasi-free $π^+π^-$ electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium have been extracted for the first time. The experimental data were collected at Jefferson Laboratory with the CLAS detector. The measurements were performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q 2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1.0 GeV 2 . Sufficient experimental statistics allow for narrow binning in all kinematic variables, while maintaining a small statistical uncertainty. The extracted cross sections were compared with the corresponding cross sections off free protons, which allowed us to obtain an estimate of the contribution from events in which interactions between the final-state hadrons and the spectator neutron took place.

Search for doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons decaying into vector bosons in multi-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into W ± W ± or W ± Z bosons is performed, involving experimental signatures with two leptons of the same charge, or three or four leptons with a variety of charge combinations, missing transverse momentum and jets. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 is used. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search is guided by a type-II seesaw model that extends the scalar sector of the Standard Model with a scalar triplet, leading to a phenomenology that includes doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons. Two scenarios are explored, corresponding to the pair production of doubly charged H ±± bosons, or the associated production of a doubly charged H ±± boson and a singly charged H ± boson. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. H ±± bosons are excluded at 95% confidence level up to 350 GeV and 230 GeV for the pair and associated production modes, respectively.

Search for the decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalar bosons in the final state with four bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{\textrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson (H) to a pair of new light pseudoscalar bosons (a), followed by the prompt decay of each a boson to a bottom quark-antiquark pair, $ \textrm{H}\to \textrm{aa}\to \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $. The analysis is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. To reduce the background from standard model processes, the search requires the Higgs boson to be produced in association with a leptonically decaying W or Z boson. The analysis probes the production of new light bosons in a 15 < m$_{a}$ < 60 GeV mass range. Assuming the standard model predictions for the Higgs boson production cross sections for pp → WH and ZH, model independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the branching fraction $ \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{aa}\to \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\right) $. The combined WH and ZH observed upper limit on the branching fraction ranges from 1.10 for m$_{a}$ = 20 GeV to 0.36 for m$_{a}$ = 60 GeV, complementing other measurements in the μμττ, ττττ and bbℓℓ (ℓ = μ, τ) channels.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Photo-induced structural dynamics of o -nitrophenol by ultrafast electron diffraction

The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. Here, this work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer step, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Neutrino-Argon Cross Sections in MicroBooNE: Measurements Spanning Multiple Interaction Channels, Final States, and Neutrino Fluxes

Neutrinos are one of the most elusive particles in the Standard Model of particle physics due to their tiny interaction cross section, which makes them challenging to detect and study. There are three known flavors of neutrinos, and any given neutrino probabilistically oscillates between them as a function of the particle's energy and propagation distance. Experimental characterization of these oscillations elucidates fundamental properties of the neutrino and the Standard Model. Meeting the precision goals of ongoing and future oscillation measurements requires detailed modeling of the way neutrinos interact with nuclear matter. Precision modeling of these interactions is a challenging theoretical problem, rich with intricate physics effects to explore, and requires input from equally precise measurements of neutrino-nucleus interaction cross sections spanning a broad range of scattering channels. To fill this need, there is an ongoing multi-experiment effort to measure these cross sections across energies, interaction channels, and nuclear targets. This thesis describes three analyses reporting neutrino-argon cross section measurements with data from the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector. These span multiple interaction channels, final state topologies, and neutrino fluxes. The first analysis is a set of inclusive charged current muon neutrino cross section measurements for final states with and without protons, which provides a unique view of the hadronic final state produced in these interactions. Second is a set of cross section measurements for neutral current neutral pion production, which provides a vital dataset on this under-characterized channel. Third is significant progress on measuring neutrinos produced by kaons decaying at rest, which represents a unique opportunity to measure cross sections with a mono-energetic flux of neutrinos. These measurements are accompanied by a modeling study in the GiBUU theory framework, which probes the sensitivity of the muon neutrino and pion production measurements to the modeling of nucleon-nucleon final state interactions in neutrino-nucleus scattering.

Search for resonance in inclusive and b-tagged dijet mass spectra in proton-proton collision at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and constraints on dark matter and other models

Two analyses searching for new heavy resonances and interpreting the result with dark matter are presented in this dissertation. The first analysis searches for resonances decaying into dijet final states using the proton-proton collision data at center mass of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider in2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36 fb -1 . No significant evidence for the production of new particles is observed. A simplified model of interactions between quarks and dark matter is used to interpret the result. The second analysis searches for resonances decaying into dijet final states using the proton-proton collision data at center mass of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider in 2016, 2017, and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137.5 fb -1 . A b-tagger named DeepJet is used to examine the events with jets containing B hadrons. No evidence of new heavy resonances is observed, as well. The 95% confidence level cross-section upper limit is set on excited b-quark b* and Coloron models. Limits are also set on a simplified model of interactions between b-quarks and dark matter.

Atomistic Simulations of Thermal and Chemical Expansions of PrNi x Co 1‐x O 3‐δ Accelerated by Machine Learning Potentials

The electrodes and solid-state electrolytes in protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) experience significant lattice expansions when exposed to high steam concentrations at elevated temperatures. In this paper, phonon calculations based on a new machine learning potential (MLP) are employed to elucidate the volume expansions of the proton-conducting PrNi x Co 1-x O 3-δ (PNC) lattices, manifested under a combined influence of oxygen vacancies (V$^{\cdot\cdot}_O$ ) and proton uptake (OH$^{\cdot}_O$ ) in the bulk at varying Ni/Co occupancies. It is revealed that the Ni/Co occupancy contributes to thermal and chemical expansions differently, where thermal expansions are related to Co occupancy. In contrast, chemical expansions are more closely associated with the Ni occupancy. Both V$^{\cdot\cdot}_O$ and OH$^{\cdot}_O$ lead to higher thermal expansions when compared to the pristine PNC. The temperature increase will negatively impact the hydration-induced chemical expansions. For combined thermal and chemical expansions, it is predicted that the strategies that boost the PCEC's electrochemical performance may harm the electrode–electrolyte interfacial stability, when the Ni occupancy is high, due to severe chemical expansions. Mitigating chemical expansions of the Ni-abundant PNC will benefit the interfacial stability. Finally, the presented computational methods for phonon calculations, based on emerging machine learning interatomic potential techniques are anticipated to have a lasting impact on future PCEC development.

Searches for exclusive Higgs and Z boson decays into a vector quarkonium state and a photon using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton–proton collision data

Searches for the exclusive decays of Higgs and Z bosons into a vector quarkonium state and a photon are performed in the μ + μ - γ final state with a proton– proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are compatible with the expected back grounds. The 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs boson decays into J/ψ γ , ψ(2S) γ , and $Υ$(1S, 2S, 3S) γ are found to be 2.0 × 10 -4 , 10.5×10 -4 , and (2.5, 4.2, 3.4)×10 -4 , respectively, assuming Standard Model production of the Higgs boson. The corresponding 95% CL upper limits on the branching fractions of the Z boson decays are 1.2 × 10 -6 , 2.4 × 10 -6 , and (1.1, 1.3, 2.4) × 10 -6 . An observed 95% CL interval of (-133, 175) is obtained for the κ c /κ γ ratio of Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and a 95% CL interval of (-37, 40) is obtained for κ b /κ γ .

Resonant structure of 18 Na and the N = 8 shell

The resonant structure of the proton-unbound nucleus 18 Na has been studied via knockout reactions of a 20 Mg beam on a 9 Be target. Three resonant states in 18 Na are identified through the invariant-mass reconstruction of 17 Ne+1⁢𝑝 events, including the 1$^−_1$ ground state with one-proton decay energy of 1.38(2) MeV. In comparison with the low-lying states in the mirror neutron-rich nucleus 18 N, the 1$^−_1$ ground state and 2$^−_1$ excited state with 𝜋⁢(1⁢𝑑 5/2 ) 3 ⊗ 𝜈⁢1⁢𝑝 1/2 configurations in 18 Na likely correspond to different proton seniorities, 𝜈=3 and 1, respectively, while the 0$^−_1$ and 1$^−_2$ states with 𝜋⁢(1⁢𝑑 5/2 ) 2⁢ (2⁢𝑠 1/2 ) ⊗ 𝜈⁢1⁢𝑝 1/2 configuration show obvious Thomas-Ehrman shifts. With the more-precise atomic mass of 18 Na, the one-neutron separation energy 𝑆𝑛⁡( 19 Na)=20.31⁢(2)⁢MeV is derived. Based on the systematics of the differences in experimental one-neutron separation energy in the isotopic chains from 𝑍=9 to 12, the shell effects at 𝑁=8 for proton-rich nuclei are discussed.

Impact of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and dynamical diquark correlations on proton generalized parton distributions

We calculate the leading-twist, helicity-independent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, at finite skewness, in the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chomodynamics (QCD). The NJL model reproduces low-energy characteristics of QCD, including dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). The proton bound-state amplitude is solved for using the Faddeev equation in a quark-diquark approximation, including both dynamical scalar and axial vector diquarks. GPDs are calculated using a dressed non-local correlator, consistent with DCSB, which is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation. The model and approximations used observe Lorentz covariance, and as a consequence the GPDs obey polynomiality sum rules. Extractions of electromagnetic and gravitational form factors are performed. We find a D-term of -1.08 when the non-local correlator is properly dressed, and 0.85 when the bare correlator is used instead, suggesting that within this framework proton stability requires the constituent quarks to be dressed consistently with DCSB. In conclusion, we also find that the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment vanishes, as required by Poincare symmetry.

Magnetars and axion-like particles: probes with the hard X-ray spectrum

Quiescent hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray emission from neutron stars constitute a promising frontier to explore axion-like-particles (ALPs). ALP production in the core peaks at energies of a few keV to a few hundreds of keV; subsequently, the ALPs escape and convert to photons in the magnetosphere. The emissivity goes as ~T 6 while the conversion probability is enhanced for large magnetic fields, making magnetars, with their high core temperatures and strong magnetic fields, ideal targets for probing ALPs. We compute the energy spectrum of photons resulting from conversion of ALPs in the magnetosphere and then compare it against hard X-ray data from NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, and XMM-Newton, for a set of eight magnetars for which such data exists. Upper limits are placed on the product of the ALP-nucleon and ALP-photon couplings. For the production in the core, we perform a calculation of the ALP emissivity in degenerate nuclear matter modeled by a relativistic mean field theory. The reduction of the emissivity due to improvements to the one-pion exchange approximation is incorporated, as is the suppression of the emissivity due to proton superfluidity in the neutron star core. A range of core temperatures is considered, corresponding to different models of the steady heat transfer from the core to the stellar surface. For the subsequent conversion, we solve the coupled differential equations mixing ALPs and photons in the magnetosphere. The conversion occurs due to a competition between the dipolar magnetic field and the photon refractive index induced by the external magnetic field. Semi-analytic expressions are provided alongside the full numerical results. Furthermore, we also present an analysis of the uncertainty on the axion limits we derive due to the uncertainties in the magnetar masses, nuclear matter equation of state, and the proton superfluid critical temperature.

Characterization of the quantum state of top quark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the beam and helicity bases

Measurements of the spin correlation coefficients in the beam basis are presented for top quark-antiquark $(t\bar{t}⁢)$ systems produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The $t\bar{t}$ system is reconstructed from final states containing an electron or muon and jets. Together with the previously reported results in the helicity basis, these measurements are used to decompose the system into the Bell and spin eigenstates in various kinematic regions. The spin correlation coefficients are also used to evaluate properties of the $t\bar{t}$ quantum state, such as the purity, von Neumann entropy, and entanglement. All results are consistent with standard model predictions.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ final state using large-area jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the resonant production of a pair of standard model-like Higgs bosons using data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The final state consists of two b quark-antiquark pairs. The search is conducted in the region of phase space where at least one of the pairs is highly Lorentz-boosted and is reconstructed as a single large-area jet. The other pair may be either similarly merged or resolved, the latter reconstructed using two b-tagged jets. The data are found to be consistent with standard model processes and are interpreted as 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross sections and the branching fractions of the spin-0 radion and the spin-2 bulk graviton that arise in warped extradimensional models. The limits set are in the range 9.74–0.29 fb and 4.94–0.19 fb for a narrow radion and a graviton, respectively, with masses between 1 and 3 TeV. For a radion and for a bulk graviton with widths 10% of their masses, the limits are in the range 12.5–0.35 fb and 8.23–0.23 fb, respectively, for the same masses. These limits result in the exclusion of a narrow-width graviton with a mass below 1.2 TeV, and of narrow and 10%-width radions with masses below 2.6, and 2.9 TeV, respectively.

First Extraction of Single Differential Cross-Sections on Argon for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ Event Topologies in the MicroBooNE Detector

The precise measurement of cross-sections for a variety of interactions is critical to the success of forthcoming flagship neutrino experiments. Of special interest are neutrino interactions that leave the nucleus in a 2-particle 2-hole state (2p2h). This note will present the first cross-section measurement for the production of 2p2h states on argon. Using MicroBooNE data collected from the first three years of operation, we select events corresponding to a charged-current $ν_µ$ interaction that left the argon nucleus in a 2p2h state. These interactions produce a topology with one muon and two protons in the final state (CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$). This analysis targets a single differential cross-section measurement for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ event topologies in a variety of kinematic variables. Comparisons are made to a set of theoretical models that explore different cross-section modeling configurations.

Search for W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark at s=13TeV in the hadronic final state

A search is performed for W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . Deep neural network algorithms are used to identify the jet initiated by the bottom quark and the jet containing the decay products of the top quark when the W' boson from the top quark decays hadronically. No excess above the estimated standard model background is observed. Upper limits on the production cross sections of W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark are set. Both left- and right-handed W' bosons with masses below 3.4 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, and the most stringent limits to date on W bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state are obtained.

Electron–Nuclear Dynamics Accompanying Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Although photoinduced proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) plays an essential role in photosynthesis, a full understanding of the mechanism is still lacking due to the complex nonequilibrium dynamics arising from the strongly coupled electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. Here we report the photoinduced PCET dynamics of a biomimetic model system investigated by means of transient IR and two-dimensional electronic–vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopies, IR spectroelectrochemistry (IRSEC), and calculations utilizing long-range-corrected hybrid density functionals. This collective experimental and theoretical effort provides a nuanced picture of the complicated dynamics and synergistic motions involved in photoinduced PCET. In particular, the evolution of the 2DEV line shape, which is highly sensitive to the mixing of vibronic states, is interpreted by accurate computational modeling of the charge separated state and is shown to represent a gradual change in electron density distribution associated with a dihedral twist that occurs on a 120 fs time scale.
