A tentative unified sea model for scattering and emission

This work is an attempt to relate active and passive observations of the sea surface to each other, considering that more information can be obtained from a set of instruments when they are not just considered as a juxtaposition of separate and independent boxes, but as a single complex instrument. A careful review of several approaches to the solution of the scattering problem for a random rough surface has been performed. Inherent simplifications, and inconsistencies, are pointed out. To reduce the computation time to reasonable values, an approximate model is selected and some numerical results will be presented in order to illustrate the benefit that can be gained by a unified approach.

Performance capabilities of the 12-centimeter Xenon ion thruster

The 8- and 12-cm mercury ion thruster systems were developed primarily to provide N-S station keeping of satellites with masses up to about 1800 to 3600 kg respectively. The on-orbit propulsion requirements of recently proposed Large Space Systems (LSS) are beyond the thrust capabilities of the baseline 8- and 12-cm thruster systems. This paper presents a characterization of the performance capabilities of the 12-cm Xenon ion thruster to enable an evaluation of its application to LSS auxiliary propulsion requirements. With minor thruster modifications and simplifications the thrust was increased to 64 mN, a factor of six over the baseline 12-cm mercury thruster performance. The thruster was operated over a range of specific impulse of about 2000 to 4000 seconds and at total efficiencies up to 68.0 percent. The operating levels reached in this study were found to be close to the operating limits of the thruster design in terms of perveance, grid breakdown voltage and thruster component temperatures such as those of the magnets and cathode baffle.

White Cliffs: Operating Experience

The fourteen dish white cliffs solar power station area is remote and subject to extreme environmental conditions, solution of the associated problems required careful and thoughtful attention and the application of resources. Notwithstanding the wide range and harshness of conditions, the difficulties caused by remoteness and the lack of a technological base and the need for relatively rapid demonstration of success, the project has had a very positive outcome. Qualitative and quantitative information and lessons are now available to enable considerable simplifications to be made for a new system, reducing both hardware and operation and maintenance costs. Experience and lessons are presented, particularly in relation to: system performance in various environmental conditions; design philosophies for collectors, the array, control systems, engine and plant; operation and maintenance strategies and cost reducing possibilities. Experience so far gives encouragement for the future of such paraboloidal dish systems in appropriate areas.

Qualification tests and electrical measurements: Practice and problems

As part of the Flat-Plate Solar Array Project, 138 different module designs were subjected to qualification tests. Electrical measurements were subjected on well over a thousand modules representing more than 150 designs. From this experience, conclusions are drawn regarding results and problems, with discussion of the need for change or improvement. The qualification test sequence incuded application of environmental and electrical stresses to the module. With few exceptions, the tests have revealed defects necessitation of environmental and electrical stresses to the module. With few exceptions, the tests have revealed defects necessitating module design or process changes. However, the continued need for these tests may be questioned on the basis of technical and logistical factors. Technically, the current test sequence does not cover all design characteristics, does not include all field conditions and is not known to represent the desired 30-year module life. Logistically, the tests are time-consuming and costly, and there is a lack of, fully qualified independent test organizations. Alternatives to the current test program include simplification based on design specification and site environment, and/or the use of warranties or other commercial practices.

Simulation of terrain effects using a mesoscale mixed-layer model

The model discussed here is described in the study by Han et al. (1982) and is based on the shallow-water equations. It is noted that the mixed layer is another name for the earth's turbulent boundary layer when the latter is well stirred vertically, as under typical daytime conditions over land. The model abbreviates the vertical resolution by using only one and one-half layers; in this way, the computer power can be concentrated on the horizontal resolution of topographic effects. It is found that a steady flow pattern evolves over terrain when steady forcing occurs in the absence of surface heating or mixed-layer entrainment and that this simplification is removed when surface heating and entrainment do occur. While these findings are regarded as interesting, it is believed that they may be model dependent. The pressure adjustments upon the mixed layer caused by air movements above the mixed layer may be sufficient to preclude the evolution of a steady state on the mesoscale, even under the most ideal conditions.

Comparison of experimental and computational compressible flow in a S-duct

This paper describes experimental measurements of secondary flow in a constant area, circular cross-section 30-30 deg S-duct, and compares the results obtained with the computations performed using the PEPSIG code, a parabolized Navier-Stokes code. The flow entering the duct was turbulent, with entrance Mach number of 0.6, and the boundary layer thickness at the duct entrance was 10 percent of the duct diameter. The duct mean radius of curvature to the duct diameter was 5.077. Flow parameters were measured at six stations along the length of the duct. These measurements were made using a five-port cone probe. At least ten radial traverses were made at each station on both sides of the symmetry plane. Wall static pressures along three azimuth angles of zero, 90, and 180 deg along the duct were measured. Plots presenting the secondary velocity field as well as contour plots of the total and static-pressure fields have been obtained. Strong secondary flows were observed in the first bend, and these continued into the second bend with the formation of new vorticity in the opposite sense in the second bend. The flow exiting the duct contained two pairs of counter-rotating vortices. The computational results are in general agreement with the experiments. However, it appears that the computations underestimate the extent of the pressure distortion, due to simplifications made in the pressure field calculations.

Altitude/path-angle transitions in fuel-optimal problems for transport aircraft

Altitude/path angle transitions to fuel-optimal, energy climb and descent paths are examined for subsonic transport aircraft. These transitions are termed boundary layers in singular perturbation theory, the framework used herein to simplify solutions to the state-Euler system. The energy climb and descent paths provide equilibrium or stationary points for the boundary layer system, and thus for moderate transitions, presumed valid for the class of aircraft considered, the boundary layer system may be linearized. This simplification allows derivation of an explicit solution to the two-point boundary-value, boundary layer problem and, as a consequence, yields a nearly optimal control law, in feedback form, for the transitions. Numerical simulation results using the feedback control law are presented for a Boeing 737 airframe (NASA-ATOPS Vehicle) employing twin JT8D-7-7A engines.

Three-dimensional viscous flows with large secondary velocity

A new system of approximation equations is derived for three-dimensional steady viscous compressible flows in which a primary-flow direction is present, but in which both transverse velocity components can be large. Previous approaches which address simplification of the steady Navier-Stokes equations are discussed, and a new approach is proposed. The transverse velocity vector which corrects a given potential flow has been decomposed into potential and rotational components. It is found that the potential-velocity vector may be assumed small, whereas the rotational-velocity vector may be assumed small, whereas the rotational velocity vector and hence the composite secondary flow can be of order unity. This assumption leads to a system of governing equations whose characteristic polynomial has a non-elliptic form for arbitrary Mach numbers. The resulting non-elliptic approximation equations can be solved as an initial/boundary-value problem. Computed results confirm the small scalar-potential approximation.

A note on the variational method of Stokes and DeMarcus for radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres

A generalization of the variational principle of Stokes and DeMarcus (1971) by the construction of two bifunctionals is proposed. The equation of radiative transfer is obtained by imposing the stationary condition on such functionals, and the reflectivity and transmissivity at arbitrary angle are given by their extremum values. Further simplification is possible when trail functions are used that are linear in the variational parameters, in which case the source function derived from the method of Stokes and DeMarcus can give the reflectivity at arbitrary emergent angle to second order. The usefulness and limitations of these variational priinciples are explored with extensive numerical results.

Maximum-Likelihood Parameter-Estimation Algorithm

Efficient version of maximum-likelihood algorithm devised for calculating normal-mode frequencies and damping parameters of vibrating system from experimental data where both process noise and measurement noise present. Method applicable in vibration analysis of such complicated structures as vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft. New algorithm simplification of existing maximum-likelihood formulation using Kalman filter that allows for both process and measurement noise.

Control of a Flexible Space Antenna: A Finite Dimensional Perspective Based on Distributed Parameter Theory

The methods presented are based on results from infinite dimensional control theory, but they can be described and used in a finite dimensional context. This blend leads to an approach which employs powerful ideas on convergence, and is also quite practical for systems of realistic complexity. Appropriate reduced order models are generated simultaneously with the development of the compensator. The required models change as a function of changes in the performance demanded, sensor and actuator location, inherent damping, disturbances, etc. Thus they are driven by the control and estimation problems at hand. The compensators which emerge are very close to the ideal compensators which would be obtained with a very large order model. However, some simplification is frequently possible. The method of balanced realizations was found to be effective for this purpose.

Cloud optical thickness feedbacks in the CO2 climate problem

A radiative-convective equilibrium model is developed and applied to study cloud optical thickness feedbacks in the CO2 climate problem. The basic hypothesis is that in the warmer and moister CO2-rich atmosphere, cloud liquid water content will generally be larger too. For clouds other than thin cirrus the result is to increase the albedo more than to increase the greenhouse effect. Thus, the sign of the feedback is negative: cloud optical properties act as a thermostat and alter in such a way as to reduce the surface and tropospheric warming caused by the addition of CO2. This negative feedback can be substantial. When observational estimates of the temperature dependence of cloud liquid water content are employed in the model, the surface temperature change caused by doubling CO2 is reduced by about one half. This result is obtained for global and annual average conditions, no change in cloud amount or altitude, and constant relative humidity. These idealizations, together with other simplifications typical of one-dimensional radiative-convective climate models, render the result tentative. Further study of cloud optical property feedbacks is warranted, however, because the climate is apparently so sensitive to them.

An advanced media interface for control of modern transport aircraft navigational systems

With the advent of digital avionics, the workload of the pilot in a moderen transport aircraft is increasing significantly. This situation makes it necessary to reduce pilot workload with the aid of new advanced technologies. As part of an effort to improve information management systems, NASA has, therefore, studied an advanced concept for managing the navigational tasks of a modern transport aircraft. This concept is mainly concerned with the simplification of the pilot interface. The advanced navigational system provides a simple method for a pilot to enter new waypoints to change his flight plan because of heavy traffic, adverse weather conditions, or other reasons. The navigational system was implemented and evaluated in a flight simulator representative of a modern transport aircraft. Attention is given to the simulator, flight simulation, multimode devices, and the navigational system.

The contribution of dissociative processes to the production of atomic lines in hydrogen plasmas

The contribution of molecular dissociative processes to the production of atomic lines is considered for a steady-state hydrogen plasma. If the contribution of dissociative processes is dominant, a substantial simplification in plasma diagnostics can be achieved. Numerical calculations have been performed for the production of Balmer alpha, beta, and gamma lines in hydrogen plasmas with medium and large degrees of ionization (x greater than about 0.0001) and for electron temperatures of 5000-45,000 K and electron densities of 10 to the 10th to 10 to the 16th/cu cm.

Four-dimensional modulation and coding - An alternate to frequency-reuse

Four dimensional modulation as a means of improving communication efficiency on the band-limited Gaussian channel, with the four dimensions of signal space constituted by phase orthogonal carriers (cos omega sub c t and sin omega sub c t) simultaneously on space orthogonal electromagnetic waves are discussed. 'Frequency reuse' techniques use such polarization orthogonality to reuse the same frequency slot, but the modulation is not treated as four dimensional, rather a product of two-D modulations, e.g., QPSK. It is well known that, higher dimensionality signalling affords possible improvements in the power bandwidth sense. Four-D modulations based upon subsets of lattice-packings in four-D, which afford simplification of encoding and decoding are described. Sets of up to 1024 signals are constructed in four-D, providing a (Nyquist) spectral efficiency of up to 10 bps/Hz. Energy gains over the reuse technique are in the one to three dB range t equal bandwidth.

Effects of multiquantum transitions on molecular populations in grain-forming circumstellar environments

Simplification of astrophysical calculations can be achieved by invoking the condition of local thermodynamic equilibrium; however, recent investigations suggest that this assumption may not be valid for certain astrophysical regions. To examine the effects of multiquantum translation to vibration transitions in expanding circumstellar envelopes, vibrational populations of the lowest 20 levels of CO have been calculated as a function of pressure and radiation density for H atom-CO collisions. Significant departure from local thermodynamic equilibrium is indicated, which implies lower dissociation rates for molecular components and a subsequent enhancement in the rate of grain formation by many orders of magnitude. Stabilization of intermediate species before they can dissociate may facilitate the formation of refractory grain cores in very hot, dilute outflows. As the present calculations indicate, laboratory measurements of state-to-state translation to vibration rates are needed for a more complete understanding of circumstellar chemistry.

VLSI Architectures for Computing DFT's

Simplifications result from use of residue Fermat number systems. System of finite arithmetic over residue Fermat number systems enables calculation of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of series of complex numbers with reduced number of multiplications. Computer architectures based on approach suitable for design of very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits for computing DFT's. General approach not limited to DFT's; Applicable to decoding of error-correcting codes and other transform calculations. System readily implemented in VLSI.
