A flow quantification method has previously been developed that uses high-speed shadowgraph images to extract frequency content of a transonic flow field around a wind-tunnel model. In this method, a classical spectral analysis is performed on a set of shadowgraph image pixels to identify their intensity fluctuation frequencies. The spatial change of the image intensity is related to the second derivative of the density gradient. Examining the change of the density gradient as a function of time can be used to understand the flow field pressure fluctuations. Pressure measurements collected during a Booster Obsolescence Life Extension Forward Attachment Structure Trade Study Test are used to calibrate the shadowgraph-based measurements. The test was performed at the NASA Ames Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel 11- by 11-foot test section and investigated aerodynamic environment downstream of various booster forward attachment hardware geometries of the Space Launch System Block 2 Cargo configuration. Time-correlated shadowgraph video and model surface pressure measurements were acquired during the test and served as an ideal opportunity to calibrate and validate the shadowgraph image intensity method.

This study presents experimental results of impact and subsequent compression after impact (CAI) strength testing of sandwich structure representative of most of the acreage of a Payload Adaptor Fitting (PAF) that has been built at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). An instrumented drop weight tower was used to inflict different levels of impact damage to specimens. Load versus deflection of impact curves, visual damage, dent depth, damage as ascertained by thermography and cross-sectional microscopy were evaluated as part of the damage resistance of the structure. Compression After Impact (CAI) was performed to assess damage tolerance. The results show that at the amount of visual damage was highly dependent on whether the peel ply was present on the surface of the structure. The peel ply had some effect on the CAI strength values since the specimens with peel ply showed a 14% higher average CAI strength value. For all specimens tested in this study, CAI versus damage and CAI versus impact energy curves were plotted and it was found that damage size was a good indicator of CAI strength. It is suggested to use a b-basis damage tolerance curve based on damage size as a conservative measure of the load carrying capability of the sandwich structure with impact damage.

An in-depth investigation was conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel to evaluate flow state switching in the liftoff flow environment of the Space Launch System Block 2 Crew launch vehicle using side force measurements, two-component particle image velocimetry, and tufts flow visualization. Multimodal flow states were observed in the gap flow between the centerbody and solid rocket boosters at a range of incoming flow angles and were characterized for the relative strength of state switches. When flow switches occur, the flow is predominantly bimodal, but trimodal flow states are observed with the launch tower downstream of the vehicle. Tufts visualization indicates three-dimensionality during flow state switching, which initiates at one part of the gap and quickly transitions throughout the length of the booster. Due to the long time scales between switches, statistics such as frequency of flow state switches and converged state probabilities cannot be established without significantly increased acquisition times.

This paper examines the effects of impacts near the edge of honeycomb sandwich panels compared to impacts at the center of the specimen. Instrumented impact data, NDE, cross-sectional photomicroscopy and Compression After Impact (CAI) testing were conducted. The key result is that for a given impact severity level, the CAI strength values are about the same regardless of how close the impact is to the edge of the panel.

NASA’s Artemis-I mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center on November 16, 2022 and lasted 25 days, was the first flight test of the new Space Launch System vehicle as well as its twin solid rocket boosters. This flight test was the culmination of many years of development, testing, construction, and assembly completed by NASA and a large consortium of corporate partners, including Northrop Grumman. The solid rocket boosters are updated five-segment versions of those used during the Space Shuttle program, re-designed to provide enhanced performance and lifting capability. Booster motor performance had been characterized over the course of seven ground static tests conducted between 2009 and 2022, including three development tests, two qualification tests, and two supplemental flight support tests. The Artemis-I flight provided the first opportunity to assess solid rocket motor performance in a flight environment for any potential flight-ground biases and to ensure that measured flight performance was within requirement and analytical model limits and expectations.
