In Situ Insights into Enhanced Cooperative Ligand Exchange Kinetics via Solvent-Induced Restacking in a 2D Metal–Organic Framework

Understanding the reaction kinetics at catalytically active sites is crucial for integrating catalytic two-dimensional (2D) materials into industrial processes. This study focuses on in situ observation of ligand exchange kinetics and solvent-assisted structural restacking transition in the 2D paddle wheel-based MOF [Cu 2 (dttc) 2 ] n (DUT-134(Cu), dttc = dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′- d]thiophene-2,6-dicarboxylate). The ligand exchange process, involving the replacement of dimethylformamide (DMF) with nitriles such as acetonitrile (ACN), pentanenitrile, and heptanenitrile, was investigated using advanced in situ characterization techniques with high temporal resolution, including powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The larger analytes exhibited reduced exchange rates, consistent with enhanced steric hindrance and greater diffusion constraints. Interestingly, the study revealed that the exchange of DMF with ACN induces a structural transition to higher symmetry within few seconds, a transition from AB to AA stacking mode of the layers, and a widening of the interlayer distance. Crucially, this structural transition dramatically accelerates the solvent exchange process through cooperative effects, offering critical advantages for catalytic applications. Notably, the reverse exchange from ACN to DMF proceeds more slowly and does not reverse the structural changes, but a new phase is formed with preserved AA stacking. By isotope labeling of linker molecules in combination with two complementary theoretical vibrational simulation methods, the precise assignment of Raman bands and the vibrational modes associated with the ligand exchange process could be achieved. These pioneering insights into the dynamic behavior of 2D MOFs, coupled with ligand exchange, establish a highly promising and transformative approach to achieving enhanced tunability and responsiveness in future catalytic applications.

Full-film dry transfer of MBE-grown van der Waals materials

Abstract Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been used to create high-quality, large-scale two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials. However, due to the strong adhesion between the substrate and deposited materials, the peel-off and dry transfer of MBE-grown vdW films onto other substrates has been challenging. This limits the study and use of MBE films for heterogeneous integration including stacked and twisted heterostructures. In this work, we develop a polymer-assisted dry transfer method and successfully perform full-film transfer of various MBE-grown 2D vdW materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, topological insulators and 2D magnets. In particular, we transfer air-sensitive 2D magnets, characterize their magnetic properties, and compare them with as-grown materials. The results show that the transfer technique does not degrade the magnetic properties, with the Curie temperature and hysteresis loops exhibiting similar behaviors after the transfer. Our results enable further development of heterogeneous integration of 2D vdW materials based on MBE growth.

Open Circuit Switch Fault Management Method of a Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Converter for EV Charging Application

Multi-phase synchronous buck converter (MSBC) is becoming popular for the electric vehicle (EV) charging application because of its higher efficiency, smaller passive component sizes, bidirectional power flow, and output current ripple reduction through interleaving. This converter also provides higher reliability than the traditional single phase converter since its modular structure enables fault tolerant operation. Fault management in the converter requires the detection of switch fault, shut down of the faulty phase, and reconfiguration of the PWM signals for the healthy phases to avoid circulating current and high output current ripple. In addition, it is desirable that the fault management method can be implemented using the micro-controller unit (MCU) or digital signal processor (DSP), which are widely used to control power converters. This paper presents a fault management method for detecting switch faults and reconfiguring healthy phases using a DSP. The method is validated through simulations and experiments using a commercial off-the-shelf power stack.

Strength distributions of laminated FeNi-based metal amorphous nanocomposite ribbons

Metal Amorphous Nanocomposite (MANC) materials offer low losses at high magnetic switching frequency, enabling high power density motors with increased rotational speed. While MANCs have high strength, they are brittle. The use of motor components such as a rotor consisting of brittle material presents a reliability concern. Here, a promising MANC alloy is subjected to tensile tests and failure is observed with high-speed photography. A method is developed to prepare tensile specimens of laminated MANC and epoxy layers, simulating the stacking of an epoxy-impregnated tape-wound core. Tensile tests are conducted for single layer ribbon and for five- and ten-layer stacks of laminated material with thin layers of thermosetting epoxy. Failure distributions are shown to have increasing Weibull modulus with increasing layer count. The composite MANC material system is modeled using chain-of-bundles models. Using a k-failure model, we show that single ribbon strength distribution data can be used to predict well the failure distribution of laminated stacks. The agreement occurs when the assumed ineffective length, over which load is recovered in a failed layer, is comparable to the observed interlaminar separation length.

Membrane Electrode Assembly Manufacturing Automation Technology for the Electrochemical Compression of Hydrogen: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Electrochemical compression has the possibility to outcompete mechanical compression for hydrogen end- use applications. While HyET has a compressor that can output JO kilograms (kg)/day (fully scalable from home-to-industrial application) at up to 700 bar, the energy demand and reliability require top-quality electrochemical hydrogen compression (EHC) membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), preferably prepared by cost-effective high-capacity manufacturing. High pressure requires a special MEA design, deviating from typical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) MEAs with adapted catalyst layer substrates, asking for a modified coating process. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will help HyET by developing an automated catalyst coating process fit for EHC MEA manufacturing. In addition, inline quality inspection methods will be developed/selected to improve the MBA quality as it is used for EHC stack assembly. In a joint effort, NREL and HyET will even design an automated manufacturing process for the EHC MEA and approach potential United States (US) suppliers of manufacturing equipment.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of the Zintl Phases Na2CaCdSb2, Na2SrCdSb2 and Na2EuCdSb2

This work details the synthesis and the crystal structures of the quaternary Zintl phases Na2CaCdSb2, Na2SrCdSb2 and Na2EuCdSb2. They are isostructural and their noncentrosymmetric structure is with the space group Pmc21 (Pearson code oP12). All structural work is carried out via single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The structure features [CdSb2]4– layers of corner-shared CdSb4 tetrahedra, which are stacked along the b-crystallographic axis and are separated by cations. The results from the structure refinements suggest that in addition to full cation ordering, which is typical for this structure, there also exists a possibility for an accommodation of a small degree of cation disorder.

Fabrication and testing of composite ring specimens

The tooling and techniques used in the fabrication of composite laminate tubes of any desired ply orientation and stacking sequence are described along with techniques for cutting ring specimens under internal pressure. The method consists of laying up the tube on a central circular mandrel, and by means of internal pressure, expanding the prepreg tube against the cavity wall of an external mold tool, which forms the geometric curing envelope for the tube. Tube quality is assessed by laminate wall thickness measurement, by hoop strength measurement on rings cut from the ends of the tube, and by ultrasonic inspection.

Manual of phosphoric acid fuel cell power plant optimization model and computer program

An optimized cost and performance model for a phosphoric acid fuel cell power plant system was derived and developed into a modular FORTRAN computer code. Cost, energy, mass, and electrochemical analyses were combined to develop a mathematical model for optimizing the steam to methane ratio in the reformer, hydrogen utilization in the PAFC plates per stack. The nonlinear programming code, COMPUTE, was used to solve this model, in which the method of mixed penalty function combined with Hooke and Jeeves pattern search was chosen to evaluate this specific optimization problem.

HOMAR: A computer code for generating homotopic grids using algebraic relations: User's manual

A computer code for fast automatic generation of quasi-three-dimensional grid systems for aerospace configurations is described. The code employs a homotopic method to algebraically generate two-dimensional grids in cross-sectional planes, which are stacked to produce a three-dimensional grid system. Implementation of the algebraic equivalents of the homotopic relations for generating body geometries and grids are explained. Procedures for controlling grid orthogonality and distortion are described. Test cases with description and specification of inputs are presented in detail. The FORTRAN computer program and notes on implementation and use are included.

The Advanced Communication Technology Satellite and ISDN

This paper depicts the Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) system as a global central office switch. The ground portion of the system is the collection of earth stations or T1-VSAT's (T1 very small aperture terminals). The control software for the T1-VSAT's resides in a single CPU. The software consists of two modules, the modem manager and the call manager. The modem manager (MM) controls the RF modem portion of the T1-VSAT. It processes the orderwires from the satellite or from signaling generated by the call manager (CM). The CM controls the Recom Laboratories MSPs by receiving signaling messages from the stacked MSP shelves ro units and sending appropriate setup commands to them. There are two methods used to setup and process calls in the CM; first by dialing up a circuit using a standard telephone handset or, secondly by using an external processor connected to the CPU's second COM port, by sending and receiving signaling orderwires. It is the use of the external processor which permits the ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) Signaling Processor to implement ISDN calls. In August 1993, the initial testing of the ISDN Signaling Processor was carried out at ACTS System Test at Lockheed Marietta, Princeton, NJ using the spacecraft in its test configuration on the ground.

Resin infusion of layered metal/composite hybrid and resulting metal/composite hybrid laminate

A method of fabricating a metal/composite hybrid laminate is provided. One or more layered arrangements are stacked on a solid base to form a layered structure. Each layered arrangement is defined by a fibrous material and a perforated metal sheet. A resin in its liquid state is introduced along a portion of the layered structure while a differential pressure is applied across the laminate structure until the resin permeates the fibrous material of each layered arrangement and fills perforations in each perforated metal sheet. The resin is cured thereby yielding a metal/composite hybrid laminate.

Development of Passive Fuel Cell Thermal Management Technology

The NASA Glenn Research Center is developing advanced passive thermal management technology to reduce the mass and improve the reliability of space fuel cell systems for the NASA exploration program. The passive thermal management system relies on heat conduction within the cooling plate to move the heat from the central portion of the cell stack out to the edges of the fuel cell stack rather than using a pumped loop cooling system to convectively remove the heat. Using the passive approach eliminates the need for a coolant pump and other cooling loop components which reduces fuel cell system mass and improves overall system reliability. Previous analysis had identified that low density, ultra-high thermal conductivity materials would be needed for the cooling plates in order to achieve the desired reductions in mass and the highly uniform thermal heat sink for each cell within a fuel cell stack. A pyrolytic graphite material was identified and fabricated into a thin plate using different methods. Also a development project with Thermacore, Inc. resulted in a planar heat pipe. Thermal conductivity tests were done using these materials. The results indicated that lightweight passive fuel cell cooling is feasible.

Using nickel-molybdenum cathode catalysts for efficient hydrogen gas production in microbial electrolysis cells

A low-cost cathode catalyst based on a NiMo alloy was examined here to replace noble metals for the hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). Two NiMo catalysts were synthesized through either an electrochemical assisted (NiMo Elec) or a hydrothermal (NiMo Ht) approach. The NiMo Ht method enriched the electrocatalyst with Mo atoms compared to the NiMo Elec approach, producing a similar current density with a minimal overpotential of 50mV compared to Pt. Further, in MEC tests using the NiMo Ht catalyst, H 2 was generated at a highest rate of 81±3 L H2 /L-d (current density of 44.4 ± 0.9 A/m 2 ) at a cell voltage of -0.86 V, and a Coulombic efficiency of >97%. Modifying the closely stacked MEC design to include a reference electrode, and analysis of the electrode potentials using the electrode potential slope method, revealed a large contribution of the cathode resistance (5.3±0.5mΩm 2 ) compared to the anode (1.4±0.2mΩm 2 ) and ohmic resistance (0.83mΩm 2 ) for a total internal resistance of 7.6±0.5mΩm 2 . The high performance of the NiMo Ht catalyst coupled with its low cost provides an economically viable approach to advance the generation of biohydrogen in MECs.

Scheduling and Control of Flexible Building Loads for Grid Services Based on a Virtual Battery Model

This paper presents a framework for modeling, scheduling, and controlling residential thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to provide multiple grid services, such as energy shifting, peak load reduction, and ancillary services. A modeling method is proposed to characterize the aggregate flexibility from heterogeneous TCLs using a battery-equivalent model. Based on the flexibility model, a multi-period optimal scheduling formulation is developed to best utilize the flexibility from building loads and maximize total benefits from stacked value streams. An algorithm is proposed to control individual TCLs to follow the desired power consumption in real-time. The proposed methods are illustrated and validated through simulations.

Neural Learning Based Blind Source Separation for Detection of Material Defects in Pulsed Thermography Images

In this paper, we introduce a neural learning-based approach to blind source separation for detection of material flaws in pulsed thermography (PT) images. This approach can be used to detect internal defects (pores) in metallic Additively Manufactured (AM) materials. Such defects occur in high-strength alloys produced with direct laser sintering AM method for nuclear energy applications. Pulsed thermal imaging system utilizes a high intensity flash lamp to rapidly heat surface of sample, a high sensitivity infrared camera to capture data of surface temperature variations. The data cube obtained with PT (stack of surface temperature images at different times) can be analyzed with image processing algorithms to detect material defects. Compared with conventional nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, such as digital radiography and ultrasonic testing, the PT pulsed infrared thermal detection technique has advantages of one-sided non-contact measurements, fast processing of large sample areas captured in one image. Detection of small material defects requires finding features in thermal images, which have signal contrast levels approaching sensitivity limit of IR camera. In this study, an optimized Neural Learning based Blind Source Separation (NLBSS) algorithm, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is demonstrated to automatically extract principal temporal and spatial features of thermography frames to enhance flaw detection. By using the NLBSS algorithm, material internal defects can be automatically detected. Furthermore, this processing approach compensates for experimental thermal imaging artifacts, such as noise and uneven heating. By merging artificial intelligence with the photothermic, the NDE system detects internal calibrated defects of various sizes and depths in AM nuclear-grade metallic alloys.

Design, Fabrication, and Screening of Environmental‐Thermal Barrier Coatings Prepared by Ultrafast High‐Temperature Sintering

Abstract The demand for more efficient gas turbines relies heavily on the development of new environmental‐thermal barrier coatings (ETBCs). However, there is still uncertainty about which alloys and composites will be used for the next generation of turbine blades, as well as the most promising coating materials. Herein, an ETBCs development strategy is presented by integrating the coating design, synthesis, and screening using an ultrafast high temperature sintering (UHS) technique to accelerate coating improvements. The initial basis for composition selection is their thermal expansion mismatch with the substrate alloys; for which a temperature‐dependent coefficient of thermal expansion database is created. By combining tape casting method with the UHS technique a high‐throughput synthesis of single and multi‐layer coatings are realized with different compositions, layer stacking sequences, and layer thicknesses. To evaluate the coatings, thermal cycling tests from room temperature to 1300 °C are conducted. The approach enabled coatings on objects with complex geometries, multi‐layer ETBCs, and porosity tailoring by using staged UHS that runs with different temperatures and durations. The fast iteration strategy is more cost‐effective for the screening of ETBCs compared to conventional methods and greater throughput which can be further extended for rapid optimization of other materials systems.
