Improved thermoelectric performance in Cr-doped two-dimensional Bi 2 Te 3

Thermoelectric materials with high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity (e.g., Bi 2 Te 3 ) can efficiently convert waste heat into electricity. However, despite favorable theoretical predictions, individual Bi 2 Te 3 nanostructures such as two-dimensional (2D) nanoplates tend to underperform bulk Bi 2 Te 3 . We report a novel surface doping technique to synthesize highly n-type Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplates using an external Cr coating followed by a thermal annealing process in a reducing atmosphere, as well as the mechanism by which this surface coating – only a few atoms or less in thickness – can observably impact the thermoelectric performance of 2D Bi 2 Te 3 . The Cr atoms act as n-type carrier donors by directly incorporating into the Bi 2 Te 3 structure during thermal annealing, enhancing electrical conductivity by ∼ 70 % while increasing thermal conductivity by only ∼ 5 % at room temperature. Compared to the uncoated Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate, the Cr-doped Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate exhibits a doubled thermoelectric figure of merit (zT), which is still relatively low. Raman spectroscopy and chemical potential simulations further confirm that Cr atoms are incorporated into the Bi 2 Te 3 structure.

Ultrafine Interwoven Dendritic Cu 2 Se/CuFeSe 2 Composites with Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

As an effort to develop high-performance and stable copper chalcogenide thermoelectrics, several (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)CuFeSe 2 composites were successfully synthesized via a one-step solid-state transformation of CuSe 2 template. Uniform ultrafine dendritic structures consisting of interweaving Cu 2 Se and CuFeSe 2 nanofibers were observed in samples with low Fe content (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.1). Increasing the Fe content to x = 0.5 led to phase segregation into Cu 2 Se-rich region with embedded CuFeSe 2 fine structures interwoven with CuFeSe 2 -rich region containing Cu 2 Se nanofibers. The formation of such an entwined dendritic structure is believed to arise from the temperature-dependent solubility of CuFeSe 2 in the Cu 2 Se matrix. The dynamic dissolution of CuFeSe 2 into the Cu 2 Se at high temperatures leads to temperature-dependent doping of the Cu 2 Se matrix, enabling drastic enhancements of thermoelectric power factor at high temperatures. As a result, such a strategy is expected to be a powerful tool for properties modulation in thermoelectric materials.

Morphological Ordering of the Organic Layer for High-Performance Hybrid Thermoelectrics

Inorganic-organic hybrids, such as Te-PEDOT:PSS core/shell nanowires, have emerged as a class of promising thermoelectric materials with combined attributes of mechanical flexibility and low cost. However, the poorly understood structure-property relationship calls for further investigation for performance enhancement. Here, through precise treatments of focused electron beam irradiation and thermal annealing on individual Te-PEDOT:PSS nanowires, new, nonchemical mechanisms are introduced to specifically engineer the organic phase, and the measured results provide an unprecedented piece of evidence, confirming the dominant role of organic shell in charge transport. Paired with the Kang-Snyder model and molecular dynamics simulations, this work provides mechanistic insights in terms of heating-enabled morphological ordering of the polymer chains. The measured results show that thermal annealing on the 42 nm nanowire results in a ZT value of 0.78 at 450 K. In conclusion, through leveraging the interfacial self-assembly of the organic phase to construct a high electrical conductivity domain, this work lays out a clear framework for the development of next-generation soft thermoelectrics.

Carrier Mobility Modulation in Cu 2 Se Composites Using Coherent Cu 4 TiSe 4 Inclusions Leads to Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

Carrier transport engineering in bulk semiconductors using inclusion phases often results in the deterioration of carrier mobility (μ) owing to enhanced carrier scattering at phase boundaries. Here, we show by leveraging the temperature-induced structural transition between the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se polymorphs that the incorporation of Cu 4 TiSe 4 inclusions within the Cu 2 Se matrix results in a gradual large drop in the carrier mobility at temperatures below 400 K (α-Cu 2 Se), whereas the carrier mobility remains unchanged at higher temperatures, where the β-Cu 2 Se polymorph dominates. The sharp discrepancy in the electronic transport within the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se matrices is associated with the formation of incoherent α-Cu 2 Se/Cu 4 TiSe 4 interfaces, owing to the difference in their atomic structures and lattice parameters, which results in enhanced carrier scattering. In contrast, the similarity of the Se sublattices between β-Cu 2 Se and Cu 4 TiSe 4 gives rise to coherent phase boundaries and good band alignment, which promote carrier transport across the interfaces. Interestingly, the different cation arrangements in Cu 4 TiSe 4 and β-Cu 2 Se contribute to enhanced phonon scattering at the interfaces, which leads to a reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity. The large reduction in the total thermal conductivity while preserving the high power factor of β-Cu 2 Se in the (1–x)Cu 2 Se/(x)Cu 4 TiSe 4 composites results in an improved ZT of 1.2 at 850 K, with an average ZT of 0.84 (500–850 K) for the composite with x = 0.01. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of structural similarity between the matrix and inclusions when designing thermoelectric materials with improved energy conversion efficiency.

Thermoelectric Performance of the 2D Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 Semiconductor

Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 , a 2D compound, is a direct band gap semiconductor with an optical band gap of 0.25 eV, and is a promising thermoelectric material. Single-phase Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 is prepared by a scalable ball-milling and annealing process and the highly densified polycrystalline samples are prepared by spark plasma sintering. Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 shows a p-type semiconductor transport behavior and exhibits an intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.48 Wm -1 K -1 (cross-plane) at 573 K. The first-principles density functional theory calculations indicate that such low lattice thermal conductivity is derived from the interactions between acoustic phonons and low-lying optical phonons, local vibrations of Bi, the low Debye temperature and strong anharmonicity result from the unique 2D crystal structure and metavalent bonding of Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 . The Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits an optimal figure of merit ZT of ~0.51 at 623 K, which can be further enhanced by the substitution of Bi with Pb. Pb doping leads to a large increase in power factor S 2 σ, from ~4.0 μWcm -1 K- 2 of Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 to ~8.0 μWcm -1 K -2 of Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 at 775 K, owing to the increase in carrier concentration. Moreover, Pb doping induces a further reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity to ~0.38 Wm -1 K -1 (cross-plane) at 623 K in Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 ,. The simultaneous optimization of the power factor and lattice thermal conductivity achieves a peak ZT of ~0.90 at 723 K and a high average ZT of ~0.66 at 400–773 K in Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 .

Using Preformed Meisenheimer Complexes as Dopants for n-Type Organic Thermoelectrics with High Seebeck Coefficients and Power Factors

A pre-formed Meisenheimer complex of a naphthalenediimide (NDI) with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) is obtained in a simple way by mixing dibrominated 4,9-dibromo-2,7-bis(2-octyldodecyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone and TBAF in solution and used as a dopant for n-type organic thermoelectrics. Additionally, two n-type polymers PNDIClTVT and PBDOPVTT are synthesized, n-doped, and characterized as conductive and thermoelectric materials. PNDIClTVT doped with NDI-TBAF presents a high σ value of 0.20 S cm –1 , a Seebeck coefficient (S) of -1854 µV K –1 , and a power factor (PF) of 67 µW m –1 K –2 , among the highest reported PF in solution-processed conjugated n-type polymer thermoelectrics. Using 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine and NDI-TBAF as co-dopants, PNDIClTVT has a PF > 35 µW m –1 K –2 ; while for PBDOPVTT σ = 0.75 S cm –1 and PF = 58 µW m –1 K –2 . In this study it is found that an ionic adduct together with a neutral dopant improves the performance of n-type organic thermoelectrics leading to an enhanced power factor, and more generally, the role of such an adduct in polymer doping is also elucidated.

Synthesis and Optimization of Thermoelectric Properties of Zn(x)Sb3

High-performance thermoelectric materials are studied to investigate their abilities to optimize electrical and minimize thermal conductivities. A stoichiometric range of p-type zinc antimonide compounds was synthesized to analyze the trends in their thermoelectric properties. Zn(x)Sb3 (x=3.80, 3.85, 3.90, 3.95, 4.00, 4.05, 4.10) was reacted at 750 C and annealed at 300 C for 24 hours at each temperature. Electronic transport properties such as Seebeck and Hall Effect were measured to analyze possible trends in the set of compositions. SEM, EDS, and XRD were used to quantify both ingots and hot-pressed samples to confirm that they were single-phase and of the expected stoichiometries. Recent SEM data indicated that Zn(3.90)Sb3 and Zn(4.00)Sb3 samples were actually Zn3Sb2. In hopes of further improving the figure-of-merit (ZT) of the binary system, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, In, and Sn were used to dope (Zn(0.95)M(0.05))(3.95)Sb3.

Materials design, synthesis, and transport properties of disordered rare-earth Zintl bismuthides with the anti -Th 3 P 4 structure type

The synthesis, structural elucidation, and transport properties of the extended series Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 (RE = Y, La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, and Lu; x ≈ 1) and Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ (RE = La, Ho, Er, and Lu; x ≈ 1, δ ≈ 1.5) are presented. Structural elucidation is based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and confirms the chemical drive of Ca4Bi3 with the cubic anti-Th 3 P 4 structure type (space group I4 ¯3d, no. 220, Z = 4) into a Zintl phase by the introduction of trivalent rare-earth atoms. The structure features complex bonding, heavy elements, and electron count akin to that of valence-precise semiconductors, making it an ideal target for thermoelectrics development. Introducing crystallographic site disorders at the cation site for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 phase and both the cation and anion sites for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ phase brings about additional desirable characteristics for thermoelectric materials in the context of tuning knobs for lowering thermal conductivity. Electronic structure calculations of idealized Ca 3 YBi 3 and Ca 3 LaBi 3 compounds indicate the opening of indirect bandgaps at the Fermi level with magnitudes Eg = 0.38 eV and 0.57 eV, respectively. The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of some of the investigated phases measured on single crystals evolve in a metallic manner with magnitudes of order 1.4 mΩ cm near 500 K, thus supporting the notion of a degenerate semiconducting state, with the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient α(T) suggesting the p-type behavior. Furthermore, the low electrical resistivity and the realization of a degenerate semiconducting state in the title phases present a window of opportunity for optimizing their carrier concentrations for enhanced thermoelectric performance.

A Possible Regenerative, Molten-Salt, Thermoelectric Fuel Cell

Molten or fused salts have been evaluated as possible thermoelectric materials because of the relatively good values of their figures of merit, their chemical stability, their long liquid range, and their ability to operate in conjunction with a nuclear reactor to produce heat. In general, molten salts are electrolytic conductors; therefore, there will be a transport of materials and subsequent decomposition with the passage of an electric current. It is possible nonetheless to overcome this disadvantage by using the decomposition products of the molten-salt electrolyte in a fuel cell. The combination of a thermoelectric converter and a fuel cell would lead to a regenerative system that may be useful.

Synthesis, Structure, and Transport Properties of YbSb2Te4 and YbSb4Te7 for Thermoelectric Applications

Very little work has been done in the Yb-Sb-Te system of compounds. Exploratory synthesis of various compounds in the system has been performed in the search for new thermoelectric materials. The compounds in the system were examined due to the fact that the system is known to act as a concentrated Kondo system, a heavy fermion. Heavy fermions are known to possess high densities of state which are useful in thermoelectric applications. TWO compounds in the system, YbSb2Te4 and YbSb4Te7, have been successfully synthesized in bulk by two methods: low temperature mechanical alloying and high temperature direct synthesis. The Hall mobility, Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity were measured on both the unannealed and annealed compounds up to 550 C to determine the dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT. The results indicate that both compounds make promising candidates for use in thermoelectric devices.

Computer modeling of thermoelectric generator performance

Features of the DEGRA 2 computer code for simulating the operations of a spacecraft thermoelectric generator are described. The code models the physical processes occurring during operation. Input variables include the thermoelectric couple geometry and composition, the thermoelectric materials' properties, interfaces and insulation in the thermopile, the heat source characteristics, mission trajectory, and generator electrical requirements. Time steps can be specified and sublimation of the leg and hot shoe is accounted for, as are shorts between legs. Calculations are performed for conduction, Peltier, Thomson, and Joule heating, the cold junction can be adjusted for solar radition, and the legs of the thermoelectric couple are segmented to enhance the approximation accuracy. A trial run covering 18 couple modules yielded data with 0.3% accuracy with regard to test data. The model has been successful with selenide materials, SiGe, and SiN4, with output of all critical operational variables.

Theory and performance of plated thermocouples.

A theory has been developed to describe the performance of thermocouples which have been formed by electroplating portions of one thermoelectric material with another. The electroplated leg of the thermocouple was modeled as a collection of infinitesimally small homogeneous thermocouples connected in series. Experiments were performed using several combinations of Constantan wire sizes and copper plating thicknesses. A transient method was used to develop the thermoelectric calibrations, and the theory was found to be in quite good agreement with the experiments. In addition, data gathered in a Soviet experiment were also found to be in close agreement with the theory.

Bulk Grain-Boundary Materials from Nanocrystals

Grain-boundary engineering is pivotal to fully utilize the mechanical, electrical, and thermal-transport properties of various materials. However, current methods in metallurgy rely almost exclusively on top-down approaches, making precise grain-boundary engineering, especially at nanoscale, difficult to achieve. Herein, we report a method to produce tailored grain-boundary conditions with nanoscale precision from colloidal metal nanocrystals through surface treatment followed by a pressure-sintering process. The resulting bulk grain-boundary materials (which we call “nanocrystal coins”) possess a metal-like appearance and conductivity while inheriting the original domain features of the nanocrystal building blocks. In this work, nanoindentation measurements confirmed the superior mechanical hardness of the obtained materials. Further, we use this method to fabricate, for the first time, a single-component bulk metallic glass from amorphous palladium nanoparticles. Our discovery may spur the development of new materials whose functionality crucially depends on the domain configuration at nanoscale, such as superhard materials, thermoelectric generators, and functional electrodes.
