Environmental and economic analyses of chemical recycling via dissolution of waste polyethylene terephthalate

Globally, more than 1000 organizations and 175 nations are facing the plastic waste problem and have realized the need to transition from “linear-to-circular” economy of plastics. While the current mechanical recycling technologies for plastics are struggling to increase the U.S. plastic recycling rates beyond 9%, chemical recycling technologies become important complementary technologies to the predominant mechanical recycling that are needed to realize the circular economy in plastics supply chains. Dissolution is one such chemical recycling technology that can recycle waste plastic back into high-quality virgin grade plastic. However, the environmental and economic impacts of chemical recycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via dissolution technology using a green solvent are unknown. Our study evaluated environmental metrics such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cumulative energy demand, and economic metrics such as net present value (NPV), minimum selling price, payback period, return on investment, and discounted internal rate of return for three dissolution processes with polymer recovery via anti-solvent, evaporation, and cooling precipitation techniques. The dissolution process with evaporation technique was the most economically favorable, whereas that with cooling technique was the most environmentally favorable. The anti-solvent approach had low economic performance and the highest environmental impacts. The NPV for all of these technologies ranged from $2.67 MM to $10.93 MM for a capacity of 8,400 MT/year and was found to be the highest for dissolution with evaporation approach and the least for anti-solvent approach. The cradle-to-gate GHG emissions and energy demand for PET dissolution processes ranged from 1.33-3.77 kg CO2-eq/kg of chemically recycled (CR) PET and18.9-56.1 MJ/kg of CR-PET, respectively. These economic and environmental metrics will be helpful in evaluating the sustainability of circular PET supply chains in the U.S.

Deterministic Current–Induced Perpendicular Switching in Epitaxial Co/Pt Layers without an External Field

Current–induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs) have emerged as a powerful tool to control magnetic elements and non–uniform magnetic textures such as domain walls and skyrmions. SOT–induced switching of perpendicular magnetization generally requires an external field to break the rotational symmetry of the spin–orbit effective fields responsible for the deterministic reversal. The proposed mechanisms to eliminate this requirement often rely on complex multilayer structures that necessitate laborious optimization in the material and spin transport properties, making them less attractive for applications. Herein, current–induced, external field–free switching of an epitaxial MgO/Pt/Co trilayer with an extremely large perpendicular anisotropy in excess of 3 Tesla is reported. It is found that switching occurs due to the interplay of strong SOTs, local anisotropy fluctuations, and the Dzyaloshinkii–Moriya interaction inherent to this epitaxial system. Finally, given that these layers constitute the base stack of a magnetic tunnel junction, this switching mechanism offers the most technologically viable path toward devices such as field–free SOT–based magnetic random–access memories.

Highly Anisotropic Quasi‐Direct Organic Metal Halide Hybrids: A Platform for Polarization‐Sensitive Optoelectronics

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) exhibit remarkable optical properties and enhanced environmental stability. We investigate a 1D OMHH with formula C 4 N 2 H 14 PbBr 4 , consisting of Pb–Br chains separated by organic cations, which shows a large Stokes shift (0.83 eV) and broadband emission. Through first-principles calculations and polarized Raman spectroscopy, we characterize the material's vibrational properties and identify the specific phonon modes that drive exciton self-trapping. Our novel GW/Bethe-Salpeter equation force formalism reveals that low-frequency phonons (∼ 100 cm −1 , primarily involving Pb–Br motions) couple strongly with excitons, with a remarkably high Huang-Rhys factor of 137 ± 4, and gives a pathway for ultrafast structural analysis during the absorption process. This phonon-exciton coupling mechanism explains the material's broadband emission and provides a pathway for controlling optical properties through vibrations and for tuning vibrations through optical excitations. The material also exhibits highly anisotropic optical properties and electronic transport, with bands that are dispersive along the Pb–Br chains but nearly flat in perpendicular directions, resulting in direction-dependent electrical conductivity that is calculated to be an order of magnitude higher along the chain direction and consistent with measurements. These combined properties make this system an excellent platform for polarization-sensitive optoelectronic devices.

Interfacial Strong Coupling and Negative Dispersion of Propagating Polaritons in Freestanding Oxide Membranes

Membranes of complex oxides like perovskite SrTiO3 extend the multi-functional promise of oxide electronics into the nanoscale regime of 2D materials. Here, it is demonstrated that freestanding oxide membranes supply a reconfigurable platform for nano-photonics based on propagating surface phonon polaritons. Infrared near-field imaging and spectroscopy enabled by a tunable ultrafast laser are applied to study pristine nano-thick SrTiO3 membranes prepared by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. As predicted by coupled mode theory, it is found that strong coupling of interfacial polaritons realizes symmetric and antisymmetric hybridized modes with simultaneously tunable negative and positive group velocities. By resolving reflection of these propagating modes from membrane edges, defects, and substrate structures, their dispersion is quantified with position-resolved nano-spectroscopy. Remarkably, polariton negative dispersion is found to be both robust and tunable through choice of membrane dielectric environment and thickness, and proposes a novel design for in-plane Veselago lensing harnessing this control. This work lays the foundation for tunable transformation optics at the nanoscale using polaritons in a wide range of freestanding complex oxide membranes.

Deformation Behaviors in Single BCC‐Phase Refractory Multi‐Principal Element Alloys under Dynamic Conditions

The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of a BCC-phase NbTaTiV refractory multi-principal element alloy (RMPEA) is studied over a wide range of strain rates (10 −3 to 10 3 s −1 ) and temperatures (room temperature to 850 °C). The mechanical property of present RMPEA shows less strain-rate dependence and strong resistance to softening at high temperatures. Under high strain-rate loading, the formation of thin type-I twins is observed, which could lead to an increase in strain-hardening rates. However, this hardening mechanism competes with adiabatic heating effects, resulting in the deterrence of strain-hardening behaviors. In contrast, substantial strain-hardening occurs at cryogenic temperatures due to the formation of twins, which act as stronger barriers to dislocation motion and interact with each other. To further understand the different strain-hardening behaviors, density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict relatively low stacking fault energies and high twinning stress for the NbTaTiV RMPEA.

Manipulation of Emergent Collective Excitations via Composition Control in Mixed MPX 3 Correlated 2D Antiferromagnets

Transition metal (i.e., Mn, Fe, Cr) and chalcogen (Se) substituents are introduced into single-crystalline NiPS 3 , and the evolution of the two emergent quasi-particle excitations characteristic to the XXZ correlated antiferromagnetism of NiPS 3 (i.e., spin orbit entangled exciton (SOX) and two-magnon scattering (2M )) are investigated as functions of substituent concentration through comprehensive room- and low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy studies. These findings are further correlated with the magnetic properties of the same set of compounds reported in prior studies. The work revealed that the SOX emission intensities and linewidths are mainly controlled by the magnetic anisotropy and spin orientations, and are strongly suppressed by the introduction of substituents. The suppression depends on the type of substituent, with Fe affecting the SOX emission more than Mn and Cr. The 2 M scattering is linked to short-range correlations and exhibits greater resiliency against metal atom substitution. While the 2M peak at low temperature gets suppressed and red-shifted in frequency with increasing concentrations of all the substituents, Fe induces the weakest suppression compared to all other substituents. Altogether, these findings revealed the introduction of substituents as a powerful route to control the emergent collective excitations in NiPS 3 and mixed-MPX 3 materials.

Sulfurization Engineering of One–Step Low–Temperature MoS 2 and WS 2 Thin Films for Memristor Device Applications

2D materials have been of considerable interest as new materials for device applications. Non-volatile resistive switching applications of MoS 2 and WS 2 have been previously demonstrated; however, these applications are dramatically limited by high temperatures and extended times needed for the large-area synthesis of 2D materials on crystalline substrates. The experimental results demonstrate a one-step sulfurization method to synthesize MoS 2 and WS 2 at 550 °C in 15 min on sapphire wafers. Furthermore, a large area transfer of the synthesized thin films to SiO 2 /Si substrates is achieved. Following this, MoS 2 and WS 2 memristors are fabricated that exhibit stable non-volatile switching and a satisfactory large on/off current ratio (10 3 –10 5 ) with good uniformity. Tuning the sulfurization parameters (temperature and metal precursor thickness) is found to be a straightforward and effective strategy to improve the performance of the memristors. Furthermore, the demonstration of large-scale MoS 2 and WS 2 memristors with a one-step low-temperature sulfurization method with simple strategy to tuning can lead to potential applications such as flexible memory and neuromorphic computing.

CO 2 absorption intensification using three-dimensional printed dynamic polarity packing in a bench-scale integrated CO 2 capture system

Postcombustion carbon capture using a chemical absorbent is a promising technology to reduce CO 2 emission. However, the overall construction and operating costs remain a major challenge. In order to intensify the absorption process and to reduce these costs, a novel dynamic polarity structured packing (DP packing) with alternate patterns of surface polarity has been developed to enhance local macro-scale turbulence within the advanced viscous solvent to reduce the mass transfer diffusion resistance. Here, three DP structured packings that incorporate multiple polymeric materials were fabricated using three-dimensional printing technique and evaluated through parametric testing using a bench-scale integrated CO 2 capture unit with 76.2 mm ID absorber. At optimized operating conditions, the DP packing showed a relative 22.7% increase in absorption and 20.0% decrease in energy penalty.

Carbonic anhydrase textile structured packing for efficient CO 2 absorption in methyldiethanolamine solvent

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an attractive biodegradable catalyst for CO 2 absorption in solvent–based CO 2 capture. However, maintaining the stability of CA as a homogeneous component of the solvents is a challenge. Solvent regeneration temperature typically exceeds the enzyme thermal tolerance, which leads to CA deactivation. To reduce the need for frequent CA replenishment and to avoid inactive CA accumulation in the solvent, this work shows the benefits of an immobilization strategy where CA is fixed in a second–generation design of textile structured packing (CATSP–2) modules. The enzyme–immobilized packing showed 1.5 times better performance in CO 2 separation compared with traditional structured packing with a corresponding increased CO 2 loading in the rich solvent. The modules exhibited good CA activity retention of ~80% during the tests without any CA replenishment. As a result, applying CATSP–2 could potentially decrease the packing height and absorber column size for a lower cost per amount of CO 2 captured.

Magnetic nanoparticle‐induced sorbent regeneration for direct air capture

Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology for decarbonization through the removal of CO 2 from the atmosphere. In many DAC processes, the regeneration energy used to restore the capture capacity of sorbents accounts for a significant fraction of the energy required by the whole process. Here we report an effective and scalable sorbent regeneration method for liquid DAC solvents based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) heating with AC magnetic fields. MNPs can be directly heated to provide uniform and rapid volumetric heating, as we demonstrate by promoting the release of captured CO 2 from an aqueous solution of potassium sarcosinate. Our results showed that 90% of the solvent can be regenerated within 7.5 min of heating through proposed technique. The MNPs and solvent are found to be stable during the regeneration process and the MNPs showed long-term stability in the CO 2 -saturated solvent. Cyclic experiments showed that the nanoparticles can be reused for multiple cycles without performance deterioration. The process is operated in a noncontact mode through electromagnetic waves, making it an adoptable approach for existing carbon capture systems. The MNPs heating provides an effective regeneration strategy for liquid solvents used in carbon capture processes, in particular for DAC.

Foaming prediction in pure liquids from dimensionless numbers inspired by the theory of fluid behavior for drops

Foaming prediction is critical for selecting materials and designing processes in industries such as bioprocessing and gas processing. Existing models lack the generality needed for a wide range of materials and overlook the foaming behavior in pure liquids. Here, this work presents a novel method for predicting foaming in pure liquids based on their density, surface tension, and viscosity, using Reynolds ( Re ) and Ohnesorge ( Oh ) numbers. A foaming prediction map, leveraging the theory of fluid drop behavior, was developed by plotting these numbers. This map delineates distinct non-foaming and foaming regions, functioning as a binary classifier for foaming predictions. The map was fitted and validated through shake test experiments on 46 liquids, demonstrating reliable predictions, except for a specific region characterized by small Oh and large Re numbers. This region corresponded to relatively low foam stability and high turbulence, making foaming predictions challenging for liquids in this category.
