Study of space shuttle orbiter system management computer function. Volume 2: Automated performance verification concepts

The findings are presented of investigations on concepts and techniques in automated performance verification. The investigations were conducted to provide additional insight into the design methodology and to develop a consolidated technology base from which to analyze performance verification design approaches. Other topics discussed include data smoothing, function selection, flow diagrams, data storage, and shuttle hydraulic systems.

Low cost tracking Navaids error model verification

Features and characteristics of the tracking navaids (Microwave Scanning Beam Landing System, Radar Altimeter, Tacan, rendezvous radar and one way Doppler extracter) were investigated. From the investigation, a set of specifications were developed for building equipment to verify the error model of the tracking navaids. Breadboard verification equipment (BVE) was built for the Microwave Scanning Beam Landing System and the radar altimeter. The breadboard verification equipment generates signals to the tracking navaids which simulate the space shuttles trajectory in the terminal area. The BVE simulates sources of navaids error by generating pseudorandom perturbations on the navaids signals. Differences between the trajectory value and the navaid derived values are taped and form the basis for the navaids error model.

Shuttle payload interface verification equipment study. Volume 2: Technical document, part 1

The technical analysis is reported that was performed during the shuttle payload interface verification equipment study. It describes: (1) the background and intent of the study; (2) study approach and philosophy covering all facets of shuttle payload/cargo integration; (3)shuttle payload integration requirements; (4) preliminary design of the horizontal IVE; (5) vertical IVE concept; and (6) IVE program development plans, schedule and cost. Also included is a payload integration analysis task to identify potential uses in addition to payload interface verification.

Integrated testing and verification system for research flight software

The MUST (Multipurpose User-oriented Software Technology) program is being developed to cut the cost of producing research flight software through a system of software support tools. An integrated verification and testing capability was designed as part of MUST. Documentation, verification and test options are provided with special attention on real-time, multiprocessing issues. The needs of the entire software production cycle were considered, with effective management and reduced lifecycle costs as foremost goals.

Considerations in STS payload environmental verification

The current philosophy of the GSFS regarding environmental verification of Shuttle payloads is reviewed. In the structures area, increased emphasis will be placed on the use of analysis for design verification, with selective testing performed as necessary. Furthermore, as a result of recent cost optimization analysis, the multitier test program will presumably give way to a comprehensive test program at the major payload subassembly level after adequate workmanship at the component level has been verified. In the thermal vacuum area, thought is being given to modifying the approaches used for conventional spacecraft.

Spacelab development and its operational verification

This paper gives a brief status report on the current Spacelab program and describes how the results of ground and flight tests will be combined to provide the operational verification of the system. For the on-going project, data on design, testing and fabrication plans are presented. In particular, recent changes to meet the constraints of a 'build-to-cost' project are described. In the operational verification of Spacelab, ground and flight tests which ESA and NASA will perform are addressed. The installation of test instrumentation and the performance of integrated tests will be accomplished in the US. Experiments for the first flight will be integrated into Spacelab racks and pallets and simulated mission tests performed. On-orbit, system thermal surveys are planned and stress data will be obtained during launch and re-entry.

Orbit attitude processor. STS-1 bench program verification test plan

A plan for the static verification of the STS-1 ATT PROC ORBIT software requirements is presented. The orbit version of the SAPIENS bench program is used to generate the verification data. A brief discussion of the simulation software and flight software modules is presented along with a description of the test cases.

Verification of the Space Shuttle ascent flight control

The unique avionics design features of the Space Shuttle ascent flight control are described, along with the test article, test equipment, and test techniques used to verify the ascent flight control prior to commitment to the first orbital flight test. The ascent mission profiles are described, noting that upon ignition of the solid rocket boosters the Shuttle vehicle will rise vertically until achieving tower clearance. The Space Shuttle vehicle uses an integrated avionics system with the Orbiter avionics providing the command, control, and monitoring for the total mated Shuttle vehicle. The sensors and the actuator systems are discussed; the method of ascent flight control system verification is described, and it is concluded that the need for an advanced avionics integration and verification laboratory was recognized early in the program to provide maximum support to all program requirements.

Computer simulated building energy consumption for verification of energy conservation measures in network facilities

A computer program called ECPVER (Energy Consumption Program - Verification) was developed to simulate all energy loads for any number of buildings. The program computes simulated daily, monthly, and yearly energy consumption which can be compared with actual meter readings for the same time period. Such comparison can lead to validation of the model under a variety of conditions, which allows it to be used to predict future energy saving due to energy conservation measures. Predicted energy saving can then be compared with actual saving to verify the effectiveness of those energy conservation changes. This verification procedure is planned to be an important advancement in the Deep Space Network Energy Project, which seeks to reduce energy cost and consumption at all DSN Deep Space Stations.

Design, analysis, and test verification of advanced encapsulation system

Procurement of 4 in x 4 in polycrystalline solar cells were proceeded with some delays. A total of 1200 cells were procured for use in both the verification testing and qualification testing. Additional thermal structural analyses were run and the data are presented. An outline of the verification testing is included with information on test specimen construction.

The experimental verification of a streamline curvature numerical analysis method applied to the flow through an axial flow fan

The experimental verification of an inviscid, incompressible through-flow analysis method is presented. The primary component of this method is an axisymmetric streamline curvature technique which is used to compute the hub-to-tip flow field of a given turbomachine. To analyze the flow field in the blade-to-blade plane of the machine, the potential flow solution of an infinite cascade of airfoils is also computed using a source model technique. To verify the accuracy of such an analysis method an extensive experimental verification investigation was conducted using an axial flow research fan. Detailed surveys of the blade-free regions of the machine along with intra-blade surveys using rotating pressure sensing probes and blade surface static pressure taps provide a one-to-one relationship between measured and predicted data. The results of this investigation indicate the ability of this inviscid analysis method to predict the design flow field of the axial flow fan test rotor to within a few percent of the measured values.

Space Telescope performance and verification

The verification philosophy for the Space Telescope (ST) has evolved from years of experience with multispacecraft programs modified by the new factors introduced by the Space Transportation System. At the systems level of test, the ST will undergo joint qualification/acceptance tests with environment simulation using Lockheed's large spacecraft test facilities. These tests continue the process of detecting workmanship defects and module interface incompatibilities. The test program culminates in an 'all up' ST environmental test verification program resulting in a 'ready to launch' ST.

Integrated testing and verification system for research flight software design document

The NASA Langley Research Center is developing the MUST (Multipurpose User-oriented Software Technology) program to cut the cost of producing research flight software through a system of software support tools. The HAL/S language is the primary subject of the design. Boeing Computer Services Company (BCS) has designed an integrated verification and testing capability as part of MUST. Documentation, verification and test options are provided with special attention on real time, multiprocessing issues. The needs of the entire software production cycle have been considered, with effective management and reduced lifecycle costs as foremost goals. Capabilities have been included in the design for static detection of data flow anomalies involving communicating concurrent processes. Some types of ill formed process synchronization and deadlock also are detected statically.

Report of the subpanel on methods of verification

A program to improve the state of understanding and of the meaning of verification and the application of verification procedures to a variety of sensor systems is recommended. The program would involve an experimental hands-on data demonstration and evaluation of those procedures in a controlled test bed experiment.

Review and verification of CARE 3 mathematical model and code

The CARE-III mathematical model and code verification performed by Boeing Computer Services were documented. The mathematical model was verified for permanent and intermittent faults. The transient fault model was not addressed. The code verification was performed on CARE-III, Version 3. A CARE III Version 4, which corrects deficiencies identified in Version 3, is being developed.

Automatic Construction of Verification Generators from Hoare Logics

A method for mechanically constructing verification condition generators from a useful class of Hoare logics is defined. Any verification condition generator constructed is shown to be sound and deduction complete with respect to the associated Hoare logic. The method was implemented.
