DSN command system Mark 3-78

The Deep Space Network Command System Mark III-78 implementation and functional operation are described. Software upgrade enables expanded storage capacity in the Deep Space Station Command Processor Assembly. Store-and-forward command data handling is operational for Voyager and Helios. Near-real-time command data handling was retained for Viking and Pioneer.

LS47: A DSN station location set compatible with JPL development ephemeris DE108

An updated Deep Space Network station location set, LS47, is presented which is compatible with JPL Development Ephemeris DE108. Analytic procedures for linearly correcting station spin axis and longitude estimates for an ephemeris update based on Brouwer-Clemence Set III parameters are briefly discussed. The validity of this technique is demonstrated by a comparison of a linearly corrected solution with one explicitly determined by reprocessing the data. A mission data base, including Viking 1 and 2 encounter data, is first used to obtain an updated DE96 compatible station location solution, LS46, which in turn is adjusted to form the DE108 solution, LS47. Improved station Z-heights are estimated by using available very long baseline interferometry data. Spin axis differences between LS46 and LS47 are relatively insignificant; however, the ephemeris change introduces a -0.8 x 10 to the -5 power degree rotation in the DE96 longitude ephemeris.

DSN water vapor radiometer: Tropospheric range delay calibration

A discussion is presented of the Deep Space Network water vapor radiometer by means of simultaneous antenna temperature and radiosonde measurements at Edwards Air Force Base. The calibration of radiometer gain and hot load radiometric noise temperature is also described. Calibration equations are given. It is found that with a selected data set, the RMS error is less than 1 cm over a total delay range of 9 to 38 cm. Limitations on the use of the water vapor radiometer are also given.

An improved storage bulb mount for DSN hydrogen masers

The presently used JPL hydrogen maser suspended atomic storage bulb and a rigid, single-plane mounted bulb are compared. The new bulb incorporates three major design changes: (1) mounting design; (2) alterations to the collimator; and (3) decrease in mass. These design changes are expected to increase the long-term stability of the frequency standard by reducing its sensitivity to vibration and thermal effects.

Preliminary report on DSN system performance under local weather effects

Local effects of precipitation are studied, and a simplified working model is developed. Experimental results obtained by simulation are in good agreement with the model, showing that it could be an important contribution to system degradation. If this is confirmed, some suggestions for improvement are presented.

Large scale state estimation algorithms for DSN tracking station location determination

Estimation of precise tracking station locations for deep space navigation is based on combining state estimates derived from a multitude of planetary encounter missions with planet direction information provided by the planetary ephemeris. Procedures for reducing the dimensionality of the station location estimation problem and for analytically correcting estimates for ephemeris updates have been developed. Using Householder transforms the large scale state estimation problem is decomposed into a sequence of dynamically uncoupled problems of lower dimension. The effect of an ephemeris update is shown to be adequately approximated by Brouwer-Clemence Set III perturbations for the earth-moon barycenter and the target planet for each mission.

DSN command system Mark III-80

The Deep Space Network command system configuration and functional operation are described. Voyager and Helios command operations are supported with Deep Space Station store and forward data handling; Viking and Pioneer are supported with the older, near real time data handling method.

DSN Monitor and Control System, Mark III-80

The Deep Space Network monitor and control system, Mark III-80 is described. The major implementations required to evolve from the Mark III-78 to the Mark III-80 configuration are identified. The affected facilities are the deep space stations and the network operations control center (NOCC). At the deep space stations a stand-alone host processor is implemented. Included are software (host software) changes which provide downline loading to the stand-alone host processor from a disc unit of any idle data system computer. At deep space stations with a 34 m antenna, the microwave subsystem is provided with an interface which allows remote configuration selection at the central monitor and control operator's position. In the NOCC, software changes are implemented to provide precision power monitor and GCF monitor displays.

Techniques for measuring arrival times of pulsar signals 1: DSN observations from 1968 to 1980

Techniques used in the ground based observations of pulsars are described, many of them applicable in a navigation scheme. The arrival times of the pulses intercepting Earth are measured at time intervals from a few days to a few months. Low noise, wide band receivers, amplify signals intercepted by 26 m, 34, and 64 m antennas. Digital recordings of total received signal power versus time are cross correlated with the appropriate pulse template.

The DSN programming system

The Deep Space Network programming system is described by a heuristic model. Interaction with two elements of that system, anomaly reporting and the MBASIC (trademark) language, is described in detail. Feedback from anomaly reporting indicates that the methodology resulted in a low anomaly rate and thereby also provided positive feedback. The need to reduce operating costs prompted the implementation of the MBASIC (trademark) language as a compiler.

DSN system performance test software

The software support group of the Deep Space Network support section is continuing the development of system performance test (SPT) software for the Deep Space Network. During the past two and one-half years, test software was developed for a new system, Radio Science, and many new features were added to existing software. Plans are underway for implementation of test software for the very long baseline interferometry system and the network data processing area. A description of the elements of the SPT software is provided.

DSN human factors project

The project plan was to hold focus groups to identify the factors influencing the ease of use characteristics of software and to bond the problem. A questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate those factors which were more appropriately measured with that method. The performance oriented factors were analyzed and relationships hypothesized. The hypotheses were put to test in the experimental phase of the project. In summary, the initial analysis indicates that there is an initial performance effect favoring computer controlled dialogue but the advantage fades fast as operators become experienced. The user documentation style is seen to have a significant effect on performance. The menu and prompt command formats are preferred by inexperienced operators. The short form mnemonic is least favored. There is no clear best command format but the short form mnemonic is clearly the worst.
