Searching for Decaying Dark Matter in Deep XMM-Newton Observation of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal

We present results of a search for the 3.5 keV emission line in our recent very long (approx. 1.4 Ms) XMM-Newton observation of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The astrophysical X-ray emission from such dark matter-dominated galaxies is faint, thus they provide a test for the dark matter origin of the 3.5 keV line previously detected in other massive, but X-ray bright objects, such as galaxies and galaxy clusters. We do not detect a statistically significant emission line from Draco; this constrains the lifetime of a decaying dark matter particle to tau >(7-9) × 10(exp 27) s at 95% CL (combining all three XMM-Newton cameras; the interval corresponds to the uncertainty of the dark matter column density in the direction of Draco). The PN camera, which has the highest sensitivity of the three, does show a positive spectral residual (above the carefully modeled continuum) at E = 3.54 +/- 0.06 keV with a 2.3(sigma) significance. The two MOS cameras show less-significant or no positive deviations, consistently within 1(sigma) with PN. Our Draco limit on tau is consistent with previous detections in the stacked galaxy clusters, M31 and the Galactic Centre within their 1 − 2(sigma) uncertainties, but is inconsistent with the high signal from the core of the Perseus cluster (which has itself been inconsistent with the rest of the detections). We conclude that this Draco observation does not exclude the dark matter interpretation of the 3.5 keV line in those objects.

Spreading Sequence System for Full Connectivity Relay Network

Fully connected uplink and downlink fully connected relay network systems using pseudo-noise spreading and despreading sequences subjected to maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. The relay network systems comprise one or more transmitting units, relays, and receiving units connected via a communication network. The transmitting units, relays, and receiving units each may include a computer for performing the methods and steps described herein and transceivers for transmitting and/or receiving signals. The computer encodes and/or decodes communication signals via optimum adaptive PN sequences found by employing Cholesky decompositions and singular value decompositions (SVD). The PN sequences employ channel state information (CSI) to more effectively and more securely computing the optimal sequences.

A Superposed Metric for Spinning Black Hole Binaries Approaching Merger

We construct an approximate metric that represents the spacetime of spinning binary black holes (BBH) approaching merger. We build the metric as an analytical superposition of two Kerr metrics in harmonic coordinates, where we transform each black hole term with time-dependent boosts describing an inspiral trajectory. The velocities and trajectories of the boost are obtained by solving the post-Newtonian (PN) equations of motion at 3.5 PN order. We analyze the spacetime scalars of the new metric and we show that it is an accurate approximation of Einstein’s field equations in vacuum for a BBH system in the inspiral regime. Furthermore, to prove the effectiveness of our approach, we test the metric in the context of a 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical (GRMHD) simulation of accreting minidisks around the black holes. We compare our results with a previous well-tested spacetime construction based on the asymptotic matching method. We conclude that our new spacetime is well-suited for long-term GRMHD simulations of spinning binary black holes on their way to the merger.

Controlling Tautomerization in Pyridine-Fused Phosphorus-Nitrogen Heterocycles

Inclusion of a second nitrogen atom in the aromatic core of phosphorus-nitrogen (PN) heterocycles results in unexpected tautomerization to a nonaromatic form. This tautomerization, initially observed in the solid state through X-ray crystallography, is also explained by computational analysis. We prepared an electron deficient analogue (2 e) with a fluorine on the pyridine ring and showed that the weakly basic pyridine resisted tautomerization, providing key insights to why the transformation occurs. To study the difference in solution vs. solid-state heterocycles, alkylated analogues that lock in the quinoidal tautomer were synthesized and their different 1 H NMR and UV/Vis spectra studied. Ultimately, we determined that all heterocycles are the aromatic tautomer in solution and all but 2 e switch to the quinoidal tautomer in the solid state. Better understanding of this transformation and under what circumstances it occurs suggest future use in a switchable on/off hydrogen-bond-directed receptor that can be tuned for complementary hydrogen bonding.

High-Quality Revision of the Israeli Seismic Bulletin

Seismic bulletins, with trustworthy phase picks, origin times, and source locations are key for regional seismic studies, such as travel-time (TT) tomography, attenuation tomography, and anisotropy studies. To lay the groundwork for such studies in Israel, we revised the seismic bulletin of Israel and the surrounding area and obtained a trustworthy TT data set. From the earthquake and explosion bulletins of the Geophysical Institute of Israel, we compiled a starting data set of about 123,000 earthquakes and explosions that occurred during the past 40 yr. After screening out the poorly recorded events, we were left with a data set of ~38,000 well-recorded events. We then revised the remaining data set in two consecutive steps. In the first, we reviewed and updated station metadata, including changes in station metadata parameters over time. In the second step, we jointly relocated a list of selected seismic events, using the Bayesian hierarchical location software package (BayesLoc) of Myers et al. (2007) that performs joint relocation of multiple events. We observed striking dissimilarities between the spatial distributions of the newly relocated catalog and the initial locations. Although the depth distribution of the starting catalog is trimodal with peaks at 0, 5, and 10 km, the distribution in this study is unimodal, with a broad peak between 7.5 and 12.5 km. By differencing the observed arrival times and the origin times obtained through relocation with BayesLoc, we obtained a revised TT database that consists of 261,336 Pg, 132,876 Pn, 114,816 Sg, and 60,394 Sn arrivals, from a set of 30,458 jointly relocated seismic sources. In this work, we compared prerevision and postrevision TTs as a function of epicentral distance and concluded that the revised data set contains far fewer outliers and inconsistencies than the original data set. The revised TT data set may be used for seismic studies, such as TT tomography, attenuation tomography, and anisotropy studies.

Regenerative pseudo-noise ranging for deep space applications

Currently, ranging for deep space missions is performed by turning around the uplink ranging modulation and remodulating it onto the downlink carrier. This method results in about 1.5 MHz of noise also being modulated onto the downlink, severely degrading the received ranging SNR on the ground. This degradation must be compensated for by either increasing the integration time of the received signal, which increases the length of time for the track, or increasing the downlink ranging signal's modulation index, which decreases the power available for the telemetry modulation. A method for the regeneration on the spacecraft of a pseudo noise (PN) ranging signal has been developed. This method allows for an increase of up to 30dB in the received downlink ranging power. The increased power can be used to decrease the measurement uncertainty, reduce the time of the measurement, or increase the power allocated to the downlink telemetry. This system was implemented in the Spacecraft Transponding Modem that was developed by JPL for NASA.

Cover Feature: New Noncentrosymmetric Tetrel Pnictides Composed of Square-Planar Gold(I) with Peculiar Bonding (Chem. Eur. J. 26/2021)

Compared to common types of Au(I) coordination, such as linear, trigonal planar, and tetrahedral units observed in extended solids, the square planar coordination is rare. Au(I)relia, shown in the cover image, exhibits the 3-centered bonding of Au-Tt-Au and Au-Pn-Au (on her feathers), square planar cis-[AuTt2Pn2] units (her pendant), and linear …-Au-Au-Au-… chains (her legs) that are characteristic of the novel equiatomic AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs compounds. The image was created by designer Grant Luhmann.

Progress in three-terminal heterojunction bipolar transistor solar cells

Conventional solar cells, including multijunction solar cells, are based on pn junctions as building blocks. In contrast, the three-terminal heterojunction bipolar transistor solar cell (3T-HBTSC) explores the use of a bipolar transistor structure to build a solar cell. The limiting efficiency of this transistor structure equals that of a double-junction solar cell. However, since the 3T-HBTSC does not require tunnel junctions, its minimal structure has only three semiconductor layers, while the minimal structure of a double junction solar cell has six. This work reviews the operation principles of this solar cell and the steps carried out towards its practical implementation. Experimental results on a GaInP/GaAs HBTSC prototype with bottom interdigitated contacts are presented.

Non-conservative effects on spinning black holes from world-line effective field theory

We generalize the worldline EFT formalism developed in [4–9] to calculate the non-conservative tidal effects on spinning black holes in a long wavelength approximation that is valid to all orders in the magnitude of the spin. We present results for the rate of change of mass and angular momentum in a background field and find agreement with previous calculations obtained by different techniques. We also present new results for both the non-conservative equations of motion and power loss/gain for a binary inspiral, which start at 5PN and 2.5PN order respectively and manifest the Penrose process.

Horizon radiation reaction forces

Using Effective Field Theory (EFT) methods, we compute the effects of horizon dissipation on the gravitational interactions of relativistic binary black hole systems. We assume that the dynamics is perturbative, i.e it admits an expansion in powers of Newton’s constant (post-Minkowskian, or PM, approximation). As applications, we compute corrections to the scattering angle in a black hole collision due to dissipative effects to leading PM order, as well as the post-Newtonian (PN) corrections to the equations of motion of binary black holes in non-relativistic orbits, which represents the leading order finite size effect in the equations of motion. The methods developed here are also applicable to the case of more general compact objects, eg. neutron stars, where the magnitude of the dissipative effects depends on non-gravitational physics (e.g, the equation of state for nuclear matter).

Updates to the Regional Seismic Travel Time (RSTT) Model: 1. Tomography

Abstract A function of global monitoring of nuclear explosions is the development of Earth models for predicting seismic travel times for more accurate calculation of event locations. Most monitoring agencies rely on fast, distance-dependent one-dimensional (1D) Earth models to calculate seismic event locations quickly and in near real-time. RSTT (Regional Seismic Travel Time) is a seismic velocity model and computer software package that captures the major effects of three-dimensional crust and upper mantle structure on regional seismic travel times, while still allowing for fast prediction speed (milliseconds). We describe updates to the RSTT model using a refined data set of regional phases (i.e., Pn, Pg, Sn, Lg) using the Bayesloc relative relocation algorithm. The tomographic inversion shown here acts to refine the previous RSTT public model ( rstt201404um ) and displays significant features related to areas of global tectonic complexity as well as further reduction in arrival residual values. Validation of the updated RSTT model demonstrates significant reduction in median epicenter mislocation (15.3 km) using all regional phases compared to the iasp91 1D model (22.1 km) as well as to the current station correction approach used at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization International Data Centre (18.9 km).

Effect of lithium diffusion into Ga 2 O 3 thin films

The integration of lithium based compounds (e.g., Li:NiO/Ga 2 O 3 , LiGa 5 O 8 /Ga 2 O 3 ) in Ga 2 O 3 based pn-heterojunctions raises concerns about interface stability, i.e., Li diffusion effects on Ga 2 O 3 properties. In this work the ex-situ diffusion of Li is investigated in three different Ga 2 O 3 epilayers systems [(001) κ-Ga 2 O 3 and (−201) β-Ga2O3 heteroepitaxy on (001) α-Al 2 O 3 , and (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 homoepitaxy] at relevant temperatures for the synthesis / processing of Li-based epilayers. It is here experimentally demonstrated and quantified the Li diffusion in all the investigated Ga 2 O 3 epilayers systems and Li bulk (D Li,bulk ) and 2D defects (D Li,2D ) diffusion coefficients are provided. In the case of the (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 homoepitaxial layer (nominally free of structural defects), hybrid functional theory calculations foresee a diffusion mechanism mediated by Ga vacancies (VGa). Moreover, in the (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 homo-layer a significant effect on its functional properties (e.g., additional Raman vibrational modes, induced conductivity in an otherwise insulating sample) upon the Li-diffusion process is experimentally highlighted and tentatively related to the passivation of acceptor defects (i.e., formation of V Ga -nLi complexes).

Magnetic structure evolution of LiFe 1- x Co x PO 4 olivines upon delithiation

We present a comprehensive study of the nuclear and magnetic structures of the mixed olivine solid solution series LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 as well as their delithiated counterparts, for metal concentrations x = 0.2 - 0.6. Through neutron powder diffraction studies, we find that the LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 series orders in the magnetic space group Pnma', consistent with their Li(Fe/Co)PO 4 parent structures. After chemical delithiation using peracetic acid, however, the removal of over 30% of the lithium from the lattice results in a transition from an A y -type to an A x -type antiferromagnetic structure. The magnetic space group consistent with A x antiferromagnetism was found to be Pn'm'a'. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibility measurements of both series reveal that delithiation increases the magnetic transition temperature, T N , from 50 K to 115 K. We find through analysis of the diffraction data that the unit cell parameters change linearly as a function of x; consequently, the exchange pathways between the Fe/Co magnetic cations are affected by the delithiation. Here, we discuss how exchange pathways, metal oxidation states, and d-orbital occupation all contribute to the observed magnetic symmetries and trends in T N in both series.

Pre-planetary nebulae: a context for principles, progress, and questions on how binaries and magnetic fields produce jets

Astrophysical outflows treated initially as spherically symmetric often show evidence for asymmetry once seen at higher resolution. The preponderance of aspherical and multipolar planetary nebulae (PN) and pre-planetary nebulae (PPN) was evident after many observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. Binary interactions have long been thought to be essential for shaping asymmetric PN/PPN, but how? PPN are the more kinematically demanding of the two, and warrant particular focus. I address how progress from observation and theory suggests two broad classes of accretion driven PPN jets: one for wider binaries (PPN-W) where the companion is outside the outer radius of the giant and accretes via Roche lobe overflow, and the other which occurs in the later stages of CE for close binaries (PPN-C). Furthermore, the physics within these scenarios connects to progress and open questions about the role and origin of magnetic fields in the engines and in astrophysical jets more generally.

Ultrafast Triplet Pair Separation and Triplet Trapping following Singlet Fission in Amorphous Pentacene Films

In this work, ultrafast infrared and electronic spectroscopy are used to examine the dynamics of triplet pair separation following singlet fission in amorphous and crystalline films of the model singlet fission chromophore, 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-Pn). Direct probing of correlated triplet pair intermediates through their unique vibrational frequencies, infrared electronic transitions, and indirectly through their visible triplet absorptions reveals that triplet pair separation occurs on similar picosecond timescales in both amorphous and crystalline films despite their markedly different average intermolecular coupling strengths. Although triplet pair separation occurs on similar timescales in both environments, measurements of diffusion-controlled triplet-triplet annihilation reveal that the diffusivity of triplet excited states is an order of magnitude lower in amorphous films. The data reveal the presence of sparse triplet traps in the amorphous environment that inhibit the transport of triplet excitons in comparison to crystalline films. These observations inform recent efforts to develop disordered and polymeric singlet fission sensitizers that contain amorphous regions. In particular, the data suggest that it may be possible to nanostructure amorphous or polymeric singlet fission sensitizers to allow ultrafast triplet pair separation and harvesting in photovoltaic and light emitting applications despite their low triplet exciton diffusivity.

Engineering Surface Architectures for Improved Durability in III–V Photocathodes

GaInP2 has shown promise as the wide bandgap top junction in tandem absorber photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting devices. Among previously reported dual-junction PEC devices with a GaInP 2 top cell, those with the highest performance incorporate an AlInP 2 window layer (WL) to reduce surface recombination and a thin GaInP2 capping layer (CL) to protect the WL from corrosion in electrolytes. However, the stability of these III-V systems is limited, and durability continues to be a major challenge broadly in the field of PEC water splitting. This work provides a systematic investigation into the durability of GaInP 2 systems, examining the impacts of the window layer and capping layer among single junction pn-GaInP 2 photocathodes coated with an MoS 2 catalytic and protective layer. The photocathode with both a CL and WL demonstrates the highest PEC performance and longest lifetime, producing a significant current for >125 h. In situ optical imaging and post-test characterization illustrate the progression of macroscopic degradation and chemical state. The surface architecture combining an MoS 2 catalyst, CL, and WL can be translated to dual-junction PEC devices with GaInP 2 or other III-V top junctions to enable more efficient and stable PEC systems.
