Polymorphic structure of $\langle a \rangle$-type screw dislocation cores in $\alpha$-Ti
The dislocation core structure has a significant role in determining the dominant slip plane and the magnitude of the Peierls stress for a dislocation. An important challenge when studying dislocation cores is to determine the stable and metastable core morphologies, and then relate these structures to the dynamics of the dislocations. ere this study introduces a method for identifying core structures that are metastable at zero temperature. Application of this method to $\langle$a$\rangle$-type screw dislocations in α-Ti (as described using an empirical potential) reveals a multitude of (meta)stable nonplanar cores. Molecular dynamics studies show how the competing metastable core structures determine the properties of the dislocations at temperature and under a range of non-Schmid stresses.
DESI DR2 Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from the Lyman Alpha Forest Multipoles
We present an alternative measurement of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) using the Legendre multipole representation of the Ly$α$ forest correlation functions from the second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey. Compressing the auto- and cross-correlation functions into Legendre multipoles yields a positive-definite covariance matrix without any smoothing -- unlike the baseline DR2 analysis -- thanks to a significantly reduced data vector size. We introduce the statistical corrections required to debias the finite-sample covariance matrix estimate and demonstrate that monopole and quadrupole terms for both auto- and cross-correlations can be used even when the correlation functions are distorted by continuum errors and contaminated by metals. This formalism has slightly diminished the constraining power of the BAO scale, while considerably weakening constraints on nuisance parameters. We measure the isotropic BAO scale with $0.93\%$ precision at $z_\mathrm{eff}=2.35$, the Hubble parameter $H(z_\mathrm{eff})=(239.5\pm3.4)~(147.09~\mathrm{Mpc}/r_d) ~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}~\text{Mpc}^{-1}$, and the transverse comoving distance $D_M(z_\mathrm{eff})=(5.80 \pm 0.10)~(r_d/147.09~\mathrm{Mpc})$~Gpc for a given value of the sound horizon ($r_d$). Our BAO results are entirely consistent with the baseline DR2 analysis.

A method for crystallographic mapping of an alpha-beta titanium alloy with nanometre resolution using scanning precession electron diffraction and open-source software libraries
An approach for the crystallographic mapping of two-phase alloys on the nanoscale using a combination of scanned precession electron diffraction and open-source python libraries is introduced in this paper. This method is demonstrated using the example of a two-phase α/β titanium alloy. The data were recorded using a direct electron detector to collect the patterns, and recently developed algorithms to perform automated indexing and analyse the crystallography from the results. Very high-quality mapping is achieved at a 3 nm step size. The results show the expected Burgers orientation relationships between the α laths and β matrix, as well as the expected misorientations between α laths. A minor issue was found that one area was affected by 180° ambiguities in indexing occur due to this area being aligned too close to a zone axis of the α with twofold projection symmetry (not present in 3D) in the zero-order Laue Zone, and this should be avoided in data acquisition in the future. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates a good workflow for the analysis of nanocrystalline two- or multi-phase materials, which will be of widespread use in analysing two-phase titanium and other systems and how they evolve as a function of thermomechanical treatments.

Characterization of the scintillation response of water-based liquid scintillator to alpha particles, and implications for particle identification
Next-generation large-scale neutrino detectors, from EOS, at the 1 t scale, to THEIA, at the 10 s-of-kt scale, will utilize differences in both the scintillation and Cherenkov light emission for different particle species to perform background rejection. This manuscript presents measurements of the scintillation light yield and emission time profile of water-based liquid scintillator samples in response to α radiation. These measurements are used as input to simulation models used to make predictions for future detectors. In particular, we present the timing-based particle identification achievable in generic water-based scintillator detectors at the 4 t, 1 kt, and 100 kt scales. We find that α/β discrimination improves with increasing scintillation concentration and we identify better than 80% α rejection for 90% β acceptance in 10% water-based liquid scintillator, at the 4 t scale.
Potassium-Containing α-MnO 2 Nanotubes: The Impact of Hollow Regions on Electrochemistry
α-MnO 2 type materials have been studied as electrode materials in rechargeable batteries and electrocatalysts due to their 2 × 2 tunneled crystal structures capable of accommodating cations and their tunable physiochemical properties. In this study, we deliberately synthesized K + containing α-MnO 2 (K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 ) hollow nanotubes varying the dimensions of the hollow regions and level of surface defects. The K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 nanotube material samples have similar crystallinity, thermal stability, and average Mn oxidation state. Oxygen surface defects in the hollow regions were revealed through detailed studies using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The impact of the hollow regions and associated surface defects on the electrochemistry of K x Mn 8 O 16 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and galvanostatic cycling. The K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 nanotubes with a large hollow region (~30 nm) and higher level of surface defects show higher apparent lithium ion diffusion coefficients and lower polarization compared to the nanotubes with a small hollow region (~10 nm). In-situ lithiation demonstrated that the dimensions of the nanotube walls expanded, but the hollow region did not change in size as result of lithiation. Furthermore, this research demonstrates that tuning particle architecture and surface defects can positively impact functional behavior of electrochemical storage materials.
EASY-SHIFT v Alpha
The software is a generic, price- and load-responsive control algorithm integrating heat pumps with thermal energy storage. The algorithm leverages simple models of the system and easily accessible data to schedule operation of heat pumps and thermal energy storage in ways that minimize the cost of operating the heating/cooling system. This tool is specifically designed to be easy to interact with, and something that industry partners are able to adopt. There are two current state of the art approaches. Industry tends to develop very simple algorithms, with predetermined schedules that are not capable of changing operation in response to changes in operating environment. For example, a control designed to avoid high-price electricity from 5-8 PM will not be able to adapt if the high-price period changes to 4-9 PM. Academia commonly develops algorithms called Model predictive control (MPC). MPC requires extensive data and highly trained staff to develop a specific type of simulation model of the building, connect the building to optimization algorithms, and leverage powerful computers. Industry, with limited time/finance budgets for any project, is resistant to adopting MPC due to the associated high complexity and cost.
Treatment of Prostate Cancer with CD46-targeted 225 Ac Alpha Particle Radioimmunotherapy
Radiopharmaceutical therapy is changing the standard of care in prostate cancer and other malignancies. We previously reported high CD46 expression in prostate cancer and developed an antibody–drug conjugate and immunoPET agent based on the YS5 antibody, which targets a tumor-selective CD46 epitope. Here, we present the preparation, preclinical efficacy, and toxicity evaluation of [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5, a radioimmunotherapy agent based on the YS5 antibody. [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 was developed, and its therapeutic efficiency was tested on cell-derived (22Rv1, DU145), and patient-derived (LTL-545, LTL484) prostate cancer xenograft models. Biodistribution studies were carried out on 22Rv1 tumor xenograft models to confirm the targeting efficacy. Toxicity analysis of the [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 was carried out on nu/nu mice to study short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) toxicity. Biodistribution study shows that [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 agent delivers high levels of radiation to the tumor tissue (11.64% ± 1.37%ID/g, 28.58% ± 10.88%ID/g, 29.35% ± 7.76%ID/g, and 31.78% ± 5.89%ID/g at 24, 96, 168, and 408 hours, respectively), compared with the healthy organs. [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 suppressed tumor size and prolonged survival in cell line–derived and patient-derived xenograft models. Toxicity analysis revealed that the 0.5 μCi activity levels showed toxicity to the kidneys, likely due to redistribution of daughter isotope 213 Bi. [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 suppressed the growth of cell-derived and patient-derived xenografts, including prostate-specific membrane antigen–positive and prostate-specific membrane antigen–deficient models. Overall, this preclinical study confirms that [ 225 Ac]DOTA-YS5 is a highly effective treatment and suggests feasibility for clinical translation of CD46-targeted radioligand therapy in prostate cancer.
Application of the Rossi-alpha method to simulations of HEU and organic scintillators
The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook contains thousands of high-quality benchmark measurements that include detailed descriptions of experiment designs and exhaustive accounting of uncertainties. These benchmarks are used extensively by the criticality safety and nuclear data communities. A subcritical benchmark involving bare, highly enriched uranium (HEU) has yet to be accepted to the handbook. The Measurement of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC) was proposed to address this gap. MUSiC will be performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) and will leverage bare HEU hemisphere shells that can be assembled in a variety of configurations. The measurement has the following key benefits: it will be the first set of fast, subcritical measurements of HEU to be submitted to ICSBEP; ten configurations will be measured spanning from nearly no multiplication to critical (e.g., it is a measurement of similar systems with different re activities); measurements of an all-HEU system will be of value for nuclear data validation, providing results that assist in determining biases in both measurements and simulations. A variety of detector systems will be used including a Neutron Multiplicity Array Detector (NoMAD) system (similar to the MC-15), four small volume 0.635 cm (#8960;) × 7.59 cm 3He detectors (ideal for measuring prompt neutron decay constants due to their fast recovery speed), and an array of eight 5.08 cm (#8960;) × 5.08 cm EJ-309 organic scintillator detectors. The focus of this work is the simulation of the subcritical MUSiC configurations including the EJ-309 detectors and the application of the Rossi-α method. The EJ-309 organic scintillator detector array is a new detection system that will be deployed at NCERC. Organic scintillators are ideal for measurements of fast, subcritical systems due to their short time response on the order of nanoseconds.
