State of the art: A review

Electronic devices and instruments currently used to track animals in order to determine their migratory and navigational behavior are discussed. Passive and active transducers in use for this purpose are described. The characteristics of the data received by the transducers and the equipment used to process the data are explained.

Electrocardiogram transmission - The state of the art.

A comparative analysis of available clinical EKG telemetry systems was conducted. Although present day electrocardiogram diagnosis requires a high degree of measurement accuracy, there exists wide variations in the performance characteristics of the various telemeters marketed today necessitating careful consideration of specifications prior to procurement. The authors have endeavored to provide the physicians with a clear understanding, in terms of the effects on the electrocardiogram, of the factors he must evaluate in order to ensure high fidelity EKG reproduction. A tabulation of comparative parameter values for each unit obtained from manufacturers' specifications and substantiated by standardized performance tests conducted in our laboratory is presented.

State of the art in the detection of intelligent extraterrestrial signals.

Recent progress in ideas of how signals that might represent electromagnetic radiations of intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy is summarized. Project Cyclops, carried out at Ames Research Center under the auspices of NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education, determined that microwaves are superior to lasers for interstellar signalling. It is felt that the band lying between the resonances of the two dissociation products of water, the hydrogen line at 1420 MHz, and the first hydroxyl line at 1662 MHz, is the most suitable. Phased antenna arrays of perhaps 1000 to 10,000 dishes of 100 m diam would be required. It is considered that a list of likely stars should be compiled, and these should be searched one at a time. Procedures for combing the spectrum are outlined.

Operating Room Environment Control. Part A: a Valve Cannister System for Anesthetic Gas Adsorption. Part B: a State-of-the-art Survey of Laminar Flow Operating Rooms. Part C: Three Laminar Flow Experiments

An anesthetic gas flow pop-off valve canister is described that is airtight and permits the patient to breath freely. Once its release mechanism is activated, the exhaust gases are collected at a hose adapter and passed through activated coal for adsorption. A survey of laminar air flow clean rooms is presented and the installation of laminar cross flow air systems in operating rooms is recommended. Laminar flow ventilation experiments determine drying period evaporation rates for chicken intestines, sponges, and sections of pig stomach.

Estimation of rate constants of elementary processes - A review of the state of the art.

'Thermochemical kinetics,' the codification and extrapolation of empirical observations, as applied to certain elementary reactions of importance to combustion studies, is described. This approach allows the critical scrutiny of experimental data in areas where sufficient previous data exist, while, at the same time, illuminating those key areas where more experimentation is crucial. It is shown that combination of transition-state theory with an understanding of the molecular basis of entropy puts fairly rigid constraints on the values of the Arrhenius A-factor for most reactions. This, in turn, means that the activation energy is often the key datum that is missing, and that such data can be obtained with some degree of confidence, even from measurements of rate constants at only one temperature. In complex mechanisms, it is often possible to distinguish among alternate pathways and pinpoint key processes.

Mariner 10 mission analysis - Application of a black art

A major accomplishment of the mission analysis performed for Mariner 10 was the selection of a trajectory which optimized science return from the mission. The analysis utilized simple, unweighted 'science value functions' which allowed the relative values of each candidate trajectory, for each of the seven science experiments, to be calculated. A total relative value for each trajectory was determined by a simple averaging process and sensitivities were revealed by multiplying individual values. This showed a clear scientific preference for launching in early November and was used to support deferral of the launch from early October to November 3, 1973.

A review of the state-of-the-art of the non-destructive testing of flight pressure vessels

The design of flight vessels is based on a nominal stress requirement and a fracture mechanics approach, and optimization of the weight of the vessel is based on the smallest size defect that can be detected with a high degree of confidence. The wide variety of metals used for fabrication, and the different defects that may be present in them at every stage, up to completion of the vessel, is described. Techniques currently being used for NDT are described along with their advantages, limitations and limits of detectability at high levels of confidence. Techniques considered for use in the future to improve the limits of the minimum flaw size that can currently be detected include the Delta Scan and Acoustic Emission techniques. The construction of space vessels for use in the future has been modified to reduce the presence of critical defects and so to improve the cost effectiveness of projected NDT requirements.

State of the art of metalclad airships

Metalclad airship development of the past history are considered along with the immediate prospects for continuation of the development of these airships. The metalclad airships promise high safety even in highly inclement weather, are capable of high speeds, while lifting high useful loads. Metalclad airships which in first cost would compare favorably with the costs of sea-going ships and in operating costs promise to be lower than airplanes.

A state-of-the-art review of transportation systems evaluation techniques relevant to air transportation, volume 1

Mathematical and philosophical approaches are presented for evaluation and implementation of ground and air transportation systems. Basic decision processes are examined that are used for cost analyses and planning (i.e, statistical decision theory, linear and dynamic programming, optimization, game theory). The effects on the environment and the community that a transportation system may have are discussed and modelled. Algorithmic structures are examined and selected bibliographic annotations are included. Transportation dynamic models were developed. Citizen participation in transportation projects (i.e, in Maryland and Massachusetts) is discussed. The relevance of the modelling and evaluation approaches to air transportation (i.e, airport planning) is examined in a case study in St. Louis, Missouri.
