Progress in Genetic Algorithm Fitting of X-Ray Fluorescence Data for Absorption Spectroscopy of Liquid Surfaces

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy of liquid surfaces is a promising approach to elemental analysis of forensic samples. Elements in the mixture can be identified from the XRF data because chemical elements are associated with unique spectra. This report describes progress in the development of automated identification of unknown mixtures of elements from XRF spectra using a genetic algorithm (GA). The XRF spectra are measured at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at the liquid-liquid interface during solvent extraction process. The usage of the GA is demonstrated and future implementation for related problems are then discussed.

FY25 Mid-Year Report: FABIA In-Field Laser Absorption Spectroscopy for UF6 Enrichment

From September 2024 through April 2025, the FABIA team has been working towards completing the IAEA requirements for technology transfer of the instrument. The primary tasks in place for this transfer are to complete a validation study using various enrichments of UF6, to finalize the data analysis routines in the FABIA software, and to complete FABIA electrical component compatibility. These topics are expanded in greater detail below. In addition to the tasks, the FABIA team hosted IAEA representatives to observe a live analysis demonstration of the FABIA instrument on February 3, 2025. As a result of this visit, some updates to the tasks were communicated.

Chemistry in Retrieved Ryugu Asteroid Samples Revealed by Non-Invasive X-ray Microanalyses: Pink-Beam Fluorescence CT and Tender-Energy Absorption Spectroscopy

The Hayabusa2 space mission recently retrieved 5.4 g of material from asteroid Ryugu, providing the first direct access to pristine material from a carbonaceous asteroid. This study employs a novel combination of non-invasive synchrotron X-ray techniques to examine microscale chemistry (elemental distributions and element-specific chemical speciation and local structure) inside Ryugu grains without physically cutting the samples. Manganese primarily occurs in carbonate: Mn-bearing dolomite with minor earlier ankerite. Iron sulfides present as large single grains and as smaller particles in the finer-grained matrix are both predominantly pyrrhotite. At the 5 μm scale, Fe sulfides do not show the mineralogical heterogeneity seen in many carbonaceous meteorites but exhibit some heterogeneous localized oxidation. Iron is present often as intergrowths of oxide and sulfide, indicating incomplete replacement. Trace selenium substitutes for S in pyrrhotite. Copper is present as Fe-poor Cu sulfide. These results demonstrate multiple episodes of fluid alteration on the parent body, including partial oxidation, and help constrain the sequence or evolution of fluids and processes that resulted in the current grain-scale mineralogical composition of Ryugu materials.

Anthropogenic Influences on the Chemical and Mineral Composition in Pond Sediment by X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-Ray Powder Diffraction

Manmade detention ponds have historically been impacted by anthropogenic activities such as rainwater runoff, car emissions, and drainage from infrastructures, which can lead to complications for pond ecosystems. Sediment samples collected from the northern, southern, western, and eastern regions of a small pond on a suburban high school campus on Long Island, NY, were analyzed for potential chemical changes resulting from an inundation of water by a broken water main. Incorporating synchrotron X-ray techniques, sediment was analyzed using Submicron Resolution Spectroscopy, Tender Energy X-ray Spectroscopy, and X-ray Powder Diffraction to examine heavy metals, light elements, and minerals. Results include a Zn:Cu ratio increase from 4:1 to 10:1 in the eastern zone and a higher heavy metal presence in the western zone for all elements examined, with greater distribution throughout the pond post-inundation. Lighter elements appear to remain relatively unchanged. The appearance of diopside in the eastern zone post-inundation samples suggests contamination from the water main break, while the presence of carbonate minerals in the western zone is consistent with erosion of asphalt material from the adjacent parking lot.

Infrared absorption spectroscopy of dynamically compressed water

Streaked visible spectroscopy is well established in dynamic compression research. Infrared measurements remain problematic, however, due to the diminishing sensitivity of streak camera photocathodes beyond 800 nm. Time-stretch techniques offer an alternative method for probing infrared features during single-event experiments. This paper discusses the development of a time-stretch spectroscopy diagnostic using dispersed supercontinuum laser pulses. The technique is applied to near-infrared measurements of liquid water during multiple shock compression.

Mode matching method for absorption spectroscopy systems

Systems and methods for controlling optical feedback in an optical system. A resonant optical cavity includes at least two cavity mirrors, one of which is a cavity coupling mirror, and has a plurality of optical resonance cavity modes. A radiation source emits a beam of continuous wave radiation and is capable of being scanned whereby a mean optical frequency of the continuous wave radiation beam is adjustable over a range of frequencies, wherein the radiation source is responsive to optical feedback radiation emerging from the cavity, and wherein the mode matching optics couples the beam of continuous wave radiation to the cavity via the cavity coupling mirror. The radiation source and the mode matching optics are aligned so that a mode fill ratio is reduced relative to a maximum mode fill ratio, wherein the laser beam is coupled with a fundamental cavity mode.
