Accelerator Science & Engineering (AS&E) Workforce Roundtable and AS&E Traineeship Principal Investigator Meeting

A one-and-half-day meeting on the Accelerator Science & Engineering (AS&E) Workforce Roundtable and a one-day meeting of Traineeship Principal Investigators took place at Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University on January 21-23, 2025. The meeting identified critical issues in the AS&E workforce and potential solutions, with a focus on DOE’s major accelerator facilities. The Traineeship PIs meeting focused on sharing experience, efficiency, and improvements of the Traineeship Programs conducted in six US universities. Several managers from the DOE High Energy Physics Office participated in the meetings. The discussions resulted in a decision to conduct similar meetings every year.

Graduate Traineeships in Accelerator Engineering and Physics

This final report summarizes the Norfolk State University portion of the project Graduate Traineeships in Accelerator Engineering and Physics. In the funded proposal, Norfolk State University participated as a collaborating institution in a broader multi-institution traineeship effort designed to prepare graduate students for work in accelerator engineering and physics, including students from Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and Hampton University.

Manufacturing Full-Scale High Gradient Copper Accelerators: Electron Beam Welding and Allied Processes

This DOE ARDAP-funded study examines the technical and business feasibility of manufacturing high-gradient normal conducting RF (NCRF) copper accelerating structures using electron beam welding (EBW) instead of conventional high-temperature brazing. The core motivation is material performance: brazing softens copper significantly, while hard copper alloys have demonstrated ~75% higher operational gradients in SLAC tests, making cold-joining techniques highly attractive. EBW, applied to split-cell (half or quadrant) structure designs, preserves copper hardness away from the weld joint and simplifies machining — but industrial process optimization remains immature and a substantial learning curve is expected. The business case was modeled for two scenarios: a greenfield EBW linac company (> $10M upfront costs, viable above ~30 units/year) and an EBW division added to an existing accelerator firm to reduce risk and upfront costs, at the expense of being less optimal structure for the higher volume production. The study concludes that without a significant increase in demand, private investment alone cannot sustain this capability, and recommends federal support through R&D grants, procurement incentives, and CAPEX cost-sharing to incubate domestic EBW-NCRF manufacturing — with the existing-company model.

Acceleration of Thermochemistry Solves in MOOSE and Pronghorn

This work focuses on the development and implementation of strategies to accelerate thermochemical calculations within MOOSE-based multiphysics simulations, particularly for applications in MSRs. We highlight the inherent complexity of nuclear materials, which require a multiscale approach to accurately model their behavior across various physical domains, including mechanical, chemical, and thermal phenomena. Thermochemical equilibrium calculations are crucial for predicting material properties and enhancing the fidelity of these simulations. The integration of Thermochimica, a Gibbs energy minimizer, into MOOSE allows for the direct minimization of Gibbs energy at every point on the mesh. However, the computational cost of such integration is significant. To address this, we explored acceleration strategies such as multi-threading support and the use of a thermodynamic ValueCache to reduce redundant calculations. Additionally, we investigated modifications to Thermochimica to enable phase constraints and improve its coupling with phase-field models, which are essential for simulating microstructural evolution and corrosion in MSR. These efforts aim to optimize the computational efficiency and accuracy of multiphysics simulations, thereby supporting the development of reliable and efficient nuclear materials for next-generation reactor technologies.

European Contributions to Fermilab Accelerator Upgrades and Facilities for the DUNE Experiment

The Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II) to the FNAL accelerator chain and the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will provide the world's most intense neutrino beam to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) enabling a wide-ranging physics program. This document outlines the significant contributions made by European national laboratories and institutes towards realizing the first phase of the project with a 1.2 MW neutrino beam. Construction of this first phase is well underway. For DUNE Phase II, this will be closely followed by an upgrade of the beam power to > 2 MW, for which the European groups again have a key role and which will require the continued support of the European community for machine aspects of neutrino physics. Beyond the neutrino beam aspects, LBNF is also responsible for providing unique infrastructure to install and operate the DUNE neutrino detectors at FNAL and at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The cryostats for the first two Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detector modules at SURF, a contribution of CERN to LBNF, are central to the success of the ongoing execution of DUNE Phase I. Likewise, successful and timely procurement of cryostats for two additional detector modules at SURF will be critical to the success of DUNE Phase II and the overall physics program. The DUNE Collaboration is submitting four main contributions to the 2026 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics process. This paper is being submitted to the 'Accelerator technologies' and 'Projects and Large Experiments' streams. Additional inputs related to the DUNE science program, DUNE detector technologies and R&D, and DUNE software and computing, are also being submitted to other streams.

Forced RF generation of CW magnetrons for superconducting accelerators

CW magnetrons, designed and optimized for industrial RF heaters, were suggested to power Superconducting RF cavities due to their higher efficiency and lower cost than traditional klystrons, IOT’s, or solid-state amplifiers. RF amplifiers driven by a master-oscillator serve as coherent RF sources. CW magnetrons are regenerative RF generators with a huge regenerative gain. Very large regenerative gain causes instability with intense noise when a magnetron operates with the anode voltage higher than the threshold of self-excitation. Traditionally for stabilization of magnetrons is used injection-locking by a quite small signal. In this case the CW magnetrons do not provide correlation of the magnetron startup with the injection-locking signal. Thus, the magnetron except the injection locked oscillations may generate large noise. This may increase emittance of the beam in SRF accelerators. Recently we have developed mode for forced RF generation of CW magnetrons when the magnetron startup is provided by the injected forcing signal and the regenerative noise is suppressed. The mode is most suitable for SRF accelerators. The mode is briefly described below.

SMR Accelerated Development Needs with Adequate Safety

The development of advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) is ongoing. A customer-focused development approach requires accelerated design and analysis of the reactor system while minimizing engineering, regulatory, and economic challenges. SMRs, although not a new concept, are being considered for rapid deployment with optimized economic scalability, and several designs are currently seeking approval. Understanding the research and development needs, with adequate safety support, accelerates reactor development.

Explainable Graph Learning for Particle Accelerator Operations

Particle accelerators are vital tools in physics, medicine, and industry, requiring precise tuning to ensure optimal beam performance. However, real-world deviations from idealized simulations make beam tuning a time-consuming and error-prone process. In this work, we propose an explanation-driven framework for providing actionable insight into beamline operations, with a focus on the injector beamline at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). We represent beamline configurations as heterogeneous graphs, where setting nodes represent elements that human operators can actively adjust during beam tuning, and reading nodes passively provide diagnostic feedback. To identify the most influential setting nodes responsible for differences between any two beamline configurations, our approach first predicts the resulting changes in reading nodes caused by variations in settings, and then learns importance scores that capture the joint influence of multiple setting nodes. Experimental results on real-world CEBAF injector data demonstrate the framework’s ability to generate interpretable insights that can assist human operators in beamline tuning and reduce operational overhead.

By applying multiple environmental stresses in fieldrepresentative combinations and sequences, combined-accelerated stress testing (CAST) identifies degradation modes and failure mechanisms of photovoltaic (PV) modules and components that are missed by single stress factor accelerated testing.

Guided Mode Evolution and Ionization Injection in Meter-Scale Multi-GeV Laser Wakefield Accelerators

Here, we show that multi-GeV laser wakefield electron accelerators in meter-scale, low density hydrodynamic plasma waveguides operate in a new nonlinear propagation regime dominated by sustained beating of lowest order modes of the ponderomotively modified channel; this occurs whether or not the injected pulse is linearly matched to the guide. For a continuously doped gas jet, this emergent mode beating effect leads to axially modulated enhancement of ionization injection and a multi-GeV energy spectrum of multiple quasimonoenergetic peaks; the same process in a locally doped jet produces single multi-GeV peaks with <10% energy spread. A three-stage model of drive laser pulse evolution and ionization injection characterizes the beating effect and explains our experimental results.

Proton Dynamics Scenarios in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab

The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab provides a versatile platform for studying the interplay of space-charge, impedance, and non-linear optics in high-intensity hadron beams within synchrotrons and storage rings. This report examines the parameters and dynamics of 2.5~MeV proton beam operations in two configurations of the bare IOTA lattice: one for demonstrating Non-linear Integrable Optics with the Danilov-Nagaitsev magnet, and the other for use with electron cooling. We offer order-of-magnitude estimates of the transverse emittance growth rate as a function of beam intensity, highlighting contributions from residual gas scattering, intra-beam scattering, and space-charge effects. Under nominal conditions, the beam lifetime is projected to be less than 7~minutes at low intensity with the current vacuum quality, and fewer than 100,000~turns at high intensity due to strong space-charge effects. The calculations presented here will guide strategies to mitigate emittance growth and inform future IOTA experiments.

Quadrupole wiggler for a collinear wakefield accelerator

A quadrupole wiggler consisting of a row of alternating-polarity permanent magnet-excited quadrupoles is used in a collinear wakefield accelerator under development at Argonne National Laboratory. Fine translational and angular adjustment mechanisms are implemented in all quadrupoles to obtain a better than 1−μ⁢m precision in the alignment of quadrupole wiggler assemblies. The quadrupole’s magnetic and mechanical designs are described. Two wiggler prototypes were fabricated, aligned, and characterized performing pulsed wire magnetic measurements. The sensitivity of the quadrupole wiggler alignment to the ambient temperature was measured.

Matched Guiding and Controlled Injection in Dark-Current-Free, 10-GeV-Class, Channel-Guided Laser-Plasma Accelerators

Here we measure the high-intensity laser propagation throughout meter-scale, channel-guided laser-plasma accelerators by adjusting the length of the plasma channel on a shot-by-shot basis, showing high-quality guiding of 500 TW laser pulses over 30 cm in a hydrogen plasma of density n 0 ≈ 1 X 10 17 cm -3 . We observed transverse energy transport of higher-order modes in the first ≈ 12 cm of the plasma channel, followed by quasimatched propagation, and the gradual, dark-current-free depletion of laser energy to the wake. We quantify the laser-to-wake transfer efficiency limitations of currently available petawatt-class lasers and demonstrate via simulation how control over the laser mode can significantly improve beam parameters. Using 21.3 J of laser energy, and triggering localized electron injection, we observed electron bunches with single, quasimonoenergetic peaks up to 9.2 GeV with charge extending beyond 10 GeV.

Resonant Emittance Mixing of Flat Beams in Plasma Accelerators

Linear colliders rely on high-quality flat beams to achieve the desired event rate while avoiding potentially deleterious beamstrahlung effects. Here, we show that flat beams in plasma accelerators can be subject to quality degradation due to emittance mixing. This effect occurs when the beam particles' betatron oscillations in a nonlinearly coupled wakefield become resonant in the horizontal and vertical planes. Emittance mixing can lead to a substantial decrease of the luminosity, the main quantity determining the event rate. In some cases, the use of laser drivers or flat particle beam drivers may decrease the fraction of resonant particles and, hence, mitigate emittance deterioration.

A GPU‐Accelerated Generative Adversarial Model for Causal Inference

We develop a GPU-accelerated machine learning generative adversarial model designed to facilitate causal inferences from observational data. Our model's theoretical framework is conceptualized in a manner that is amenable to being operable and scalable for high-performance computing platforms. We leverage GPU acceleration to develop a parallel evolutionary algorithm to achieve large-scale parallel computation of the model within a now widely accessible computing platform. This capability both enhances computational speedup and efficiency and also extends the use of the model to a broader range of substantive research domains while maintaining the underlying theoretical properties of the model.

Applying Machine‐Learning Methods to Laser Acceleration of Protons: Lessons Learned From Synthetic Data

ABSTRACT In this study, we consider three different machine‐learning methods—a three‐hidden‐layer neural network, support vector regression, and Gaussian process regression—and compare how well they can learn from a synthetic data set for proton acceleration in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration regime. The synthetic data set was generated from a previously published theoretical model by Fuchs et al. 2005 that we modified. Once trained, these machine‐learning methods can assist with efforts to maximize the peak proton energy, or with the more general problem of configuring the laser system to produce a proton energy spectrum with desired characteristics. In our study, we focus on both the accuracy of the machine‐learning methods and the performance on one GPU including memory consumption. Although it is arguably the least sophisticated machine‐learning model we considered, support vector regression performed very well in our tests.
