An asymptotic technique for estimating the variance of power spectra is applied to aircraft flyover noise data. The results are compared with directly estimated variances and they are in reasonable agreement. The basic time series need not be Gaussian for asymptotic theory to apply. The asymptotic variance formulae can be useful tools both in the design and analysis phase of experiments of this type.
Small scale model acoustic experiments were conducted to measure the noise produced in the flyover and sideline planes by an engine under the wing externally blown flap configuration in its approach attitude. Broadband low frequency noise reductions as large as 9 dB were produced by reducing the separation distance between the nozzle exhaust plane and the flaps. Experiments were also conducted to determine the noise suppression effectiveness in comparison with a reference configuration of three passive types of devices that were located on the jet impingement surfaces of the reference configuration. These devices produced noise reductions that varied up to 10 dB at reduced separation distances. In addition, a qualitative estimate of the noise suppression characteristics of the separate devices was made. Finally static aerodynamic performance data were obtained to evaluate the penalties incurred by these suppression devices. The test results suggest that further parametric studies are required in order to understand more fully the noise mechanisms that are affected by the suppression devices used.
An interconnected system of computer programs for analyzing the propagation and attenuation of sound in aeroengine ducts containing realistic compressible subsonic mean flows, ADAM was developed primarily for research directed towards the reduction of noise emitted from turbofan aircraft engines. The two basic components are a streamtube curvature program for determination of the mean flow, and a finite element code for solution of the acoustic propagation problem. The system, which has been specifically tailored for ease of use, is presently installed at NASA Langley Reseach Center on a Control Data Cyber 175 Computer under the NOS Operating system employing a Tektronix terminal for interactive graphics. The scope and organization of the ADAM system is described. A users guide, examples of input data, and results for selected cases are included.

Recent analytical, numerical-simulation and experimental studies of sound generation by high-Reynolds-number turbulent shear flows are reviewed, with a focus on the application of linear rapid-distortion theory to the calculation of the unsteady flow field producing the sound. This approach is considered the most important alternative to acoustic-analogy methods. Topics surveyed include the linear theory of solid-surface interactions, the jet-noise problem, extensions to more complex turbulent flows, and supersonic flows. Graphs comparing theoretical and experimental results are shown.
Both aerodynamic and near field acoustic behavior of several unheated axisymmetric shock free and shock containing high speed jet plumes are reported. The exit Mach number range for these data is from 0.9 to 2.5. The aerodynamic measurements include both mean and turbulence quantities for a shock free jet plume produced by a convergent divergent nozzle designed to have an exit Mach number of 2. The near field acoustic measurements presented include narrow band spectra, directivity and contour plots of select one third octave band data, and near field microphone correlations from a linear array. Shock noise results are also included as obtained by operating an underexpanded convergent nozzle at the design point of two supersonic exist Mach number convergent divergent nozzles.
This paper provides an assessment from an experimental point of view of the present understanding of high speed jet noise primarily as it pertains to shock containing supersonic jet plumes. The nature of this assessment involves an examination of the complex flow and related acoustic field associated with this problem. A certain emphasis is placed on prediction of the near acoustic field to satisfy a motivation driven by a new set of guiding principles, namely the high performance tactical fighter and second generation space transportation vehicles. The review concludes that after weighing all the experimental evidence, only after consideration of the role of large scale coherent structure is adopted can a consistent unifying theme be achieved to physically interpret and properly predict noise generation by the fundamental mechanisms.

The acoustic far field, the shock-associated noise and characteristics of the repetitive shock structure of supersonic jet flows issuing from a contoured plug-nozzle and uncontoured plug-nozzle having a short conical plug of either a solid or a combination of solid/porous surface with pointed termination operated at a range of supercritical pressure are reported. The contoured and the uncontoured plug-nozzles had the same throat area and the same annular-radius ratio.
An investigation of helicopter rotor noise at model scale was conducted in the Langley 4 by 7 meter tunnel. The program described was the first of a planned three-phase project whose purpose was to examine the characteristic noise mechanism involved in main rotor/tail rotor interaction noise. This first phase was conducted with a main rotor only, in order to identify the characteristic noise generated by only the main rotor. The aerodynamic operating conditions of the rotor system were defined during the test. The acoustic data were properly referenced.
A computer program for the prediction of noise due to the turbulence of inflow to a propeller or helicopter rotor is extended to the case of nonisotropic turbulence, on the basis of a combined mean flow contraction model and rapid distortion theory. The mean flow distortion is noted to stretch the turbulence, decreasing the velocities along the principal axis of the stretching. In the case of a principal stretching axis lying close to the rotor axis, the distortion acts to decrease the upwash velocities of the rotor: thereby decreasing the noise from levels associated with isotropic turbulence. Acoustic energies are calculated at observer location for several cases, and compared to the turbulence energy as affected by the contraction.
Experimental investigations of the acoustic far-field, the shock associated noise, and the characteristics of the repetitive shock structure of supersonic jet flows issuing from a plug-nozzle having an externally expanded contoured plug with a pointed termination, operated at a range of supercritical pressure ratios of 2.0 to 4.5 are reported. The supersonic jet flow from the contoured plug is shown to be shock-free and virtually wakeless at a pressure ratio of 3.60 (flow Mach number, 1.49). By comparison with the noise characteristics of underexpanded jet flows from an equivalent convergent nozzle, substantial reductions in the total (mixing and the shock associated) noise levels are obtained when the contoured plug nozzle is operated either in the fully-expanded (shock-free) mode or in the over- and the underexpanded modes.
The effects of the walls of an enclosed test section wind tunnel on measurements of sound fields from various sources has been studied. The acoustic field from a known source in a wind tunnel has been modeled as an infinitely long duct with constant cross section. The model was solved with a numerical panel technique in a control volume near the source, and matched to an outer analytic solution. Several sample problems were studied in a rectangular duct with and without flow. The results indicate that the presence of the duct affects the acoustic field, and that small changes in the product of duct cross dimensions and the source wave number can change the acoustic field significantly. It is also shown that, for low-frequency helicopter rotor harmonic noise, measured in typical wind tunnel rotor tests, the sound levels beyond one rotor diameter from the hub are unreliable indications of the free-field sound levels.
The results of an experimental study of the acoustic far-field, the shock associated noise, and the nature of the repetitive shock structure of supersonic jet flows issuing from plug-nozzles having externally-expanded plugs with pointed termination operated at a range of supercritical pressure ratios Xi approaching 2 to 4.5 are reported. The plug of one of these plug-nozzles was contoured. The other plug-nozzles had short conical plugs with either a solid surface or a combination of solid/porous surface of different porosities. The contoured and the uncontoured plug-nozzles had the same throat area and the same annulus-radius ratio K = R sub p/R sub N = 0.43. As the result of modifications of the shock structure, the acoustic performance of improperly expanded jet flows of an externally-expanded short uncontoured plug of an appropriate geometry with suitably perforated plug and a pointed termination, is shown to approach the acoustic performance of a shock-free supersonic jet issuing from an equivalent externally-expanded contoured plug-nozzle.
Sound generation in turbulent shear flows is examined. The emphasis is on simultaneous calculation of the turbulent flow along with the resulting sound generation rather than the alternative acoustic analogy approach. The first part of the paper is concerned with solid surface interaction. The second part concentrates on the sound generated by turbulence interacting with itself.
The state of the art in theoretical and numerical models and experimentation on broadband noise propagation from high speed aircraft components such as jets and helicopter blades is detailed. Attention is given to noise produced by jets, shear layers and turbulence and to the acoustic properties of rotors. The generation and propagation of acoustic noise are discussed in terms of the evolution of concepts for flow-tone generation to include hydrodynamic instabilities. Consideration is also given to techniques for experimental studies and theoretical models for nonlinear features of acoustic propagation of broadband noise and acoustic propagation in partially-choked or soft-walled ducts.
Techniques for applying the NASPROP-E computer code (Bober et al., 1983) to characterize the acoustic field of a transonic propfan are described and demonstrated for the case of the SR-3 propfan. It is pointed out that NASPROP E accounts for the nonlinear quadrupole, monopole, and dipole noise sources. The approach used, based on that of White (1984) and Korkan et al. (1985 and 1986), is described in detail, and the results of simulations employing different (reflective and nonreflective) inflow-outflow boundary conditions and azimuthal mesh spacings are presented in graphs and briefly discussed.
