ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) - Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Cloud Droplet Probe with QC and lat/lon/alt

The Cloud Droplet Probe (CDP) is designed to measure cloud droplet size distribution from 2 µm to 50 µm. The CDP and an appropriate data system can also calculate various other parameters including particle concentrations, effective diameter (ED), Median Volume Diameter (MVD), and Liquid Water Content (LWC). The b1 level adds standard quality control flags, and merges in flight navigation data.

Parametric study of helicopter aircraft systems costs and weights

Weight estimating relationships (WERs) and recurring production cost estimating relationships (CERs) were developed for helicopters at the system level. The WERs estimate system level weight based on performance or design characteristics which are available during concept formulation or the preliminary design phase. The CER (or CERs in some cases) for each system utilize weight (either actual or estimated using the appropriate WER) and production quantity as the key parameters.

High frequency drive mechanism for an active controls systems aircraft control surface

The mechanism was successfully utilized on a wind tunnel model tested in the transonic blow down tunnel. The mechanism is also applicable to a flying aircraft. Several interrelated mechanical subsystems were utilized, including a low inertia antibacklash drive mechanism for high frequency oscillation and a compact antibacklash drive mechanism for conversion of rotary motion to linear motion.

Intelligent interfaces to aircraft systems

An approach for developing intelligent aiding systems for airline flight crews is proposed. This approach proceeds in four cycles: (1) National Traffic Safety Board data and pilot interviews are used to determine the areas in which pilots require aid; (2) a pilot information processing model is designed; (3) an intelligent pilot-aiding model is developed; and (4) systems for implementing aiding functions are defined. This approach is utilized to design a general situation-response pilot-aiding system. The situation-response model and the structure of a general situation-response pilot-aiding system are described. The computer implementation of the situation-response information processing model is examined.

SOFIA: Aircraft system, aft telescope cavity configuration, phase 2. Volume 1: Executive summary

This volume summarizes the tasks performed by E-Systems during Phase 2 of a study evaluating the structural modifications required to install the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA in the Boeing 747 airplane. An optimal structural modification concept for installation of the Infrared telescope is identified, and the concept is validated by analysis of the static and dynamic characteristics of the modified structure.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project

NASA's UAS Integration in the NAS project, has partnered with Rockwell Collins to develop a concept Control and Non-Payload Communication system prototype radio, operating on recently allocated UAS frequency spectrum bands. The prototype radio will be used to validate initial proposed performance requirements for UAS control communications. This presentation will give an overview of the current status of the design, development, and flight test planning for this prototype radio.
