Measurements of the Michigan Airglow Observatory from 1971 to 1973 at Ester Dome Alaska

The Michigan Airglow Observatory (MAO) was located at Ester Dome Observatory, College, Alaska (latitude: 64 deg 53'N, longitude: 148 deg 03'W) since October, 1971. The MAO houses a 6-inch Fabry-Perot interferometer, a 2-channel monitoring photometer and a 4-channel tilting filter photometer. The Fabry-Perot interferometer was used extensively during the winter observing seasons of 1971-72 and 1972-73 to measure temperature and mass motions of the neutral atmosphere above approximately 90 kilometers altitude. Neutral wind data from the 1971-72 observing season as measured by observing the Doppler shift of the gamma 6300 A atomic oxygen emission line are presented.

Identification, definition and mapping of terrestrial ecosystems in interior Alaska

The author has identified the following significant results. Two new, as yet unfinished vegetation maps are presented. These tend further to substantiate the belief that ERTS-1 imagery is a valuable mapping tool. Newly selected scenes show that vegetation interpretations can be refined through use of non-growing season imagery, particularly through the different spectral characteristics of vegetation lacking foliage and through the effect of vegetation structure on apparent snow cover. Scenes now are available for all test area north of the Alaska Range except Mt. McKinley National Park. No support was obtained for the hypothesis that similar interband ratios, from two areas apparently different spectrally because of different sun angles, would indicate similar surface features. However, attempts to test this hypothesis have so far been casual.

Break-up characteristics of the Chena River watershed, central Alaska

The author has identified the following significant results. The snow melt for a small watershed (5130 sq km) in Central Alaska was successfully monitored with ERTS-1 imagery. Aerial photography was used as supporting data for periods without satellite coverage. Comparison both with actual measurements and with a computer model showed good agreement.

Seismically active structural lineaments in south-central Alaska as seen on ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. A mosaic of south-central Alaska composed of 19 ERTS-1 images, when compared with the seismicity pattern of the area, reveals that the larger earthquakes tend to fall on lineaments which are easily recognizable on the imagery. In most cases, these lineaments have not been mapped as faults. One particular lineament, which was the scene of three earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater during 1972, passes very close to Anchorage.

Analysis of state of vehicular scars on Arctic Tundra, Alaska

Identification on ERTS images of severe vehicular scars in the northern Alaska tundra suggests that, if such scars are of an intensity or have spread to a dimension such that they can be resolved by ERTS sensors (20 meters), they can be identified and their state monitored by the use of ERTS images. Field review of the state of vehicular scars in the Umiat area indicates that all are revegetating at varying rates and are approaching a stable state.

Land use maps of the Tanana and Purcell Mountain areas, Alaska, based on Earth Resources Technology Satellite imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS imagery in photographic format was used to make land use maps of two areas of special interest to native corporations under terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Land selections are to be made in these areas, and the maps should facilitate decisions because of their comprehensive presentation of resource distribution information. The ERTS images enabled mapping broadly-defined land use classes in large areas in a comparatively short time. Some aerial photography was used to identify colors and shades of gray on the various images. The 14 mapped land use categories are identified according to the classification system under development by the U.S. Geological Survey. These maps exemplify a series of about a dozen diverse Alaskan areas. The principal resource depicted is vegetation, and clearly shown are vegetation units of special importance, including stands possibly containing trees of commercial grade and stands constituting wildlife habitat.

Seismicity and plate tectonics in south central Alaska

Hypocenter distribution shows that the Benioff zone associated with the Aleutian arc terminates in interior Alaska some 75 km north of the Denali fault. There appears to be a break in the subducting Pacific plate in the Yentna River-Prince William Sound area which separates two seismically independent blocks, similar to the segmented structure reported for the central Aleutian arc.

The application of radar imagery to specific problems of interior Alaska

The possible applications are discussed of side-looking airborne radar imagery to specific geomorphic and environmental geologic problems in interior Alaska. The radar imagery described was acquired in July, 1972, by the NASA NP3A aircraft, as part of Mission 209 of the Earth Resources Aircraft Project. The frequency of the radar energy that was transmitted and recorded by the radar system was 16.5 Gigahertz; the wavelength of the radiant energy was about 1.8 centimeters. The radar system operated in both the real aperture and synthetic aperture modes simultaneously.

Joint Federal/State remote data sensing centers are advocated to help survey Alaska for land use planning by aerial photography and LANDSAT imagery. The centers are to provide satellite derived information in land use planning and offshore oil developments.

LANDSAT survey of near-shore ice conditions along the Arctic coast of Alaska

The author has identified the following significant results. On the basis of analysis of late winter 1973, 1974, and 1975 LANDSAT imagery of the Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska, the following conclusions regarding near-shore ice conditions were made: (1) by March, the seaward limit of contiguous ice is often beyond the 10 fathom contour. (2) During March, shearing can and does take place along a line roughly coincident with the 10 fathom contour. (3) Ice motions during these shearing events are not extremely great, generally on the order of 10 km. (4) Many large ice features have already been formed by late February. (5) Based on look-ahead at later LANDSAT imagery, it seems apparent that Beaufort Seas shore-fast ice was already formed by late February and may well be safe for exploratory activities from this data forward until the melt season.

On vegetation mapping in Alaska using LANDSAT imagery with primary concerns for method and purpose in satellite image-based vegetation and land-use mapping and the visual interpretation of imagery in photographic format

The author has identified the following significant results. A simulated color infrared LANDSAT image covering the western Seward Peninsula was used for identifying and mapping vegetation by direct visual examination. The 1:1,083,400 scale print used was prepared by a color additive process using positive transparencies from MSS bands 4, 5, and 7. Seven color classes were recognized. A vegetation map of 3200 sq km area just west of Fairbanks, Alaska was made. Five colors were recognized on the image and identified to vegetation types roughly equivalent to formations in the UNESCO classification: orange - broadleaf deciduous forest; gray - needleleaf evergreen forest; light violet - subarctic alpine tundra vegetation; violet - broadleaf deciduous shrub thicket; and dull violet - bog vegetation.

Multispectral remote observations of hydrologic features on the North Slope of Alaska

Visible and near-infrared satellite data and active and passive microwave aircraft data are used to analyze some hydrologic features in Arctic Alaska. The following features have been studied: the small thaw lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain (oriented lakes), Chandalar Lake in the Brooks Range, several North Slope rivers, surface water on the tundra, and snowcover on the North Slope and in the Brooks Range. Passive microwave brightness temperatures (T sub b) as seen on Electrically Scanned Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) imagery are shown to increase with increasing ice thickness on all of the lakes studied. Aufeis, an important hydrologic parameter in the Arctic, is observable in the Sagavanirktok River channel on April ESMR imagery. LANDSAT imagery with better (80 m) resolution is useful for measuring aufeis extent using band 5 imagery obtained just after snowmelt in June. It is shown that the extent of aufeis (as measured on LANDSAT imagery) varies with meteorological conditions and, therefore, may be a useful indicator of annual climate fluctuations on the North Slope. Snow and ice breakup has been traced from the Brooks Range Mountains to the Arctic Ocean Coast using LANDSAT band 7 imagery in May when melting begins in the mountains.

Reindeer range inventory in western Alaska from computer-aided digital classification of LANDSAT data

An inventory of reindeer-range resources was conducted for the USDA Soil Conservation Service of 1.6 million hectares of wildlands in western Alaska using clustering techniques with digital Landsat data. Computer-aided digital analysis produced a provisional map of rangeland types which was used to design the field collection of vegetation and soil types data. This field data facilitated refinement of the inventory map and was used to describe the map units. The informational classes important to range resources were wet, moist and alpine tundra, tidal marsh, brush and open spruce forest. A significant feature of the study was the extraction of acreage figures by administrative boundaries within the study area. In addition to soil and vegetation association map products (at scales of 1:250,000 and 1:63,360) acreage values were tallied from the digital data for each of the four grazing permit areas established by the Bureau of Land Management.

Geomorphic processes on the North Slope of Alaska

Three physiographic provinces comprise the North Slope of Alaska: the Arctic Mountains, the Arctic Foothills and the Arctic Coastal Plain Provinces. The features and processes in the Arctic Coastal Plain, a zone of continuous permafrost, are stressed in this paper. The evidence for and mechanisms of the geomorphic cycle are discussed starting with frost cracks. Frost cracks may form polygonal ground which leads to low-centered ice wedge polygons in areas having ice-rich permafrost. As the low-centered ice wedge polygons enlarge due to thermal erosion they may evolve into thaw lakes which are largely oriented in a northwest-southeast direction on the Arctic Coastal Plain. Eventual drainage of a deep lake may result in a closed-system pingo. Evidence of the various stages of the geomorphic cycle is ubiquitous on the Alaskan Arctic Coastal Plain and indicates the ice content of the permafrost in some areas.

Multispectral remote observations of hydrologic features on the North Slope of Alaska

Visible and near-infrared Landsat satellite imagery and active and passive aircraft microwave data are used to analyze some hydrologic features in Arctic Alaska. Lake studies using passive microwave imagery reveal that an increase in the microwave brightness temperature correlates with an increase in ice thickness. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery allows determination of lakes that are frozen to the bottom under certain conditions. Landsat imagery of lakes can be used to study summer ice cover dissipation, an indicator of lake depth. River channel morphometry and morphology studies are accomplished using SAR data with good (25 m) resolution. Landsat imagery is shown to be useful for analyzing interannual variations in the extent of river icings (aufeis). Snow depth variations are shown to be potentially discernable using passive microwave data. Finally, the present and potential applications of these remote sensing studies are discussed; these data are useful for locating potable water sources, planning construction in good locations, and for analyzing interannual climate fluctuations.

Seasat scanning multichannel microwave radiometer - Results of the Gulf of Alaska workshop

Scanning multichannel microwave radiometer results obtained by the Gulf of Alaska Seasat Experiment Workshop are reported. The Seasat SMMR provided data from five channels operating at 6.6, 10.7, 18, 21, and 37 GHz at vertical and horizontal polarizations. Two preliminary algorithms were used to retrieve geophysical parameters from the data: the Wentz algorithm (Bierman et al., 1978) based on a theoretically derived function for computing brightness temperatures and the Wilheit algorithm, based on statistical relationships between brightness temperatures and the geophysical parameters obtained from an ensemble of realistic sea-surface temperature values, wind speeds, atmospheric temperature profiles, water vapor profiles and cloud models. In spite of the immaturity of the data-processing algorithms, results are encouraging. For open ocean, rain-free cells of high-quality surface truth wind determinations display standard deviations of 3 m/sec about a bias of 1.5 m/sec. The sea-surface temperature exhibits a standard deviation of about 1.5 deg C about a bias of 3 to 5 deg C under a variety of meteorological conditions.

Induced electric currents in the Alaska oil pipeline measured by gradient, fluxgate, and SQUID magnetometers

The field gradient method for observing the electric currents in the Alaska pipeline provided consistent values for both the fluxgate and SQUID method of observation. These currents were linearly related to the regularly measured electric and magnetic field changes. Determinations of pipeline current were consistent with values obtained by a direct connection, current shunt technique at a pipeline site about 9.6 km away. The gradient method has the distinct advantage of portability and buried- pipe capability. Field gradients due to the pipe magnetization, geological features, or ionospheric source currents do not seem to contribute a measurable error to such pipe current determination. The SQUID gradiometer is inherently sensitive enough to detect very small currents in a linear conductor at 10 meters, or conversely, to detect small currents of one amphere or more at relatively great distances. It is fairly straightforward to achieve imbalance less than one part in ten thousand, and with extreme care, one part in one million or better.
