Analytical harmonic vibrational frequencies with VV10-containing density functionals: Theory, efficient implementation, and benchmark assessments

VV10 is a powerful nonlocal density functional for long-range correlation that is used to include dispersion effects in many modern density functionals, such as the meta-generalized gradient approximation (mGGA), B97M-V, the hybrid GGA, ωB97X-V, and the hybrid mGGA, ωB97M-V. While energies and analytical gradients for VV10 are already widely available, this study reports the first derivation and efficient implementation of the analytical second derivatives of the VV10 energy. The additional compute cost of the VV10 contributions to analytical frequencies is shown to be small in all but the smallest basis sets for recommended grid sizes. Here, this study also reports the assessment of VV10-containing functionals for predicting harmonic frequencies using the analytical second derivative code. The contribution of VV10 to simulating harmonic frequencies is shown to be small for small molecules but important for systems where weak interactions are important, such as water clusters. In the latter cases, B97M-V, ωB97M-V, and ωB97X-V perform very well. The convergence of frequencies with respect to the grid size and atomic orbital basis set size is studied, and recommendations are reported. Finally, scaling factors to allow comparison of scaled harmonic frequencies with experimental fundamental frequencies and to predict zero-point vibrational energy are presented for some recently developed functionals (including r2SCAN, B97M-V, ωB97X-V, M06-SX, and ωB97M-V).

Entanglement Capacity Estimates and Throughput Measurements of Quantum Channels

The throughput is an important performance metric of entangled qubit distribution quantum networks, and may be characterized by the number of distributed entangled qubit pairs per second (ebps). It is measured over physical quantum network connections using specialized instruments, including photonic entanglement sources and single photon detectors. Extensive theory has been developed to estimate the entangled qubit capacity of quantum channels using abstractions of physical connections. These two quantities both characterize the throughput performance but in different ways, and typically have been hard to relate to each other in concrete terms, in part due to the lack of precise measurements with matching analytical models and derivations. We describe measurements on a physical testbed with fiber connections of lengths 0-75 kilometers. We obtain the normalized analytic capacity estimates using the transmissivity approximations derived using single photon coincidence measurements, and convert them to bounds on throughput (measured in ebps) using a multiplier derived from co-located detector measurements. The results indicate consistent throughput measurements upper-bounded by their analytical capacity estimates across all connections. We show that previous capacity estimates using light measurements are below ebps measurements for some connections, due to the inclusion of non-representative decrease of light levels outside C-band with distance.

Geometric conditions for saturating the data processing inequality

Abstract The data processing inequality (DPI) is a scalar inequality satisfied by distinguishability measures on density matrices. For some distinguishability measures, saturation of the scalar DPI implies an operator equation relating the arguments of the measure. These results are typically derived using functional analytic techniques. In a complementary approach, we use geometric techniques to derive a formula that gives an operator equation from DPI saturation for any distinguishability measure; moreover, for a broad class of distinguishability measures, the derived operator equation is sufficient to imply saturation as well. Our operator equation coincides with known results for the sandwiched Rényi relative entropies, and gives new results for α - z Rényi relative entropies and a family of of quantum f -divergences, which we compute explicitly.

Voltage Restoration in Microgrids using Temporal Logic Specifications

This paper proposes an energy storage controller synthesis method for voltage restoration in microgrids with respect to temporal logic specifications (TLSs). TLSs is introduced in this paper as a formalism to control the voltage variation of a critical bus against an operational bounds over time. The power system with synchronous generator (SG) connected to a critical load bus is modeled as a set of differential-algebraic equations and a simplified analytical model is derived to describe the voltage variation of this critical bus. The control objective is to schedule an optimal control input signal from a supportive energy storage system (ESS) connected to the critical bus, such that the voltage variation of the latter satisfies the TLSs, such as a finite-time restoration. The proposed control is verified on a lumped distribution system model. With this control diagram, supportive controllers can be designed to make voltage behaviors comply with grid codes and avoid unnecessary relay actions.

Modeling the Vertical Response of an Aeroseismometer Balloon System

Aeroseismometery is a novel, cutting edge capability that involves balloon based systems for detecting and geolocating sources of infrasound. The incident infrasound from a range of sources such as volcanos, earthquakes, explosions, supersonic aircraft impinges upon the balloon system causing it to respond dynamically. The dynamic response is post-processed to locate the infrasound source. This report documents the derivation of an analytical model that predicts the balloon dynamics. Governing equations for the system are derived as well as a transfer function relating the infrasound signal to the net force on the balloon components. Experimental measurements of the infrasound signals are convolved with the transfer function and the governing equations numerically time integrated to obtain predictions of the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the balloon system. The predictions are compared to the experimental measurements with good agreement observed. The derivation focuses only on the vertical dynamics of the balloon system. Future work will develop governing equations for the swinging response of the balloon to the incident infrasound.
