Ambiguities in the partial-wave analysis of the photoproduction of pairs of pseudoscalar mesons

Applying the technique of partial-wave analysis, there are cases where more than one set of underlying complex-valued amplitudes can describe the measured observables. These ambiguities can sometimes be resolved using additional information, but assumptions are often required. It is known that the partial-wave analysis of two-pseudoscalar meson systems produced in photoproduction with a linearly polarized photon beam is free from discrete ambiguities stemming from the Barrelet zeros when the nucleon spin is ignored. In this article, we show that continuous ambiguities are possible for certain wave sets, even though the discrete ambiguities do not appear. We also explore ways to resolve these ambiguities and determine the maximal amount of information that can be obtained from analyses that suffer from these continuous ambiguities.

Local SU(2) × U(1) quark flavor symmetry in the RS bulk

We propose a model of quark flavor based on an additional SU(2) × U(1) local symmetry in a warped extra dimensional bulk. In contrast to other works, we break the additional gauge symmetry in the bulk via two complex scalars which acquire bulk vevs, rather than relying on brane-localized symmetry breaking. A gauge-covariant Kaluza-Klein decomposition of a theory with a bulk spontaneously broken gauge symmetry is performed, and exact expressions for the bulk profiles of all physical particles in such systems are given. The SM quark masses and mixings are then recreated using gauge-covariant bulk quark mass terms and Yukawa-like couplings to the new bulk scalars. A numerical sampling of points in the model parameter space that recreate the quark masses and mixings is performed at a KK scale of M KK = 5 TeV. We then compute the ΔF = 2 4-quark operators arising from our new flavor gauge bosons and scalars, and those arising from Kaluza-Klein modes of SM gauge bosons. By decoupling one of our bulk scalar fields to all quark fields except the right-handed up-like sector, we find that it is possible to greatly suppress tree-level contributions to the highly constrained Kaon mixing parameters. Instead, the dominant constraints on the model emerge from neutral Bd and D meson mixing. These constraints are explored with our numerical sampling of the model parameter space, and the specific contribution of the new flavor gauge bosons and scalars is discussed. We find that for a significant range of realistic flavor gauge couplings, the new gauge bosons compete with the normally dominant gluon flavor-changing currents, but flavor-changing operators emerging from the bulk scalar fields are highly suppressed. Finally, we briefly comment on flavor constraints that are independent of the flavor gauge sector arising from the Z$\overline{b}$ L b L coupling and rare top decays.

Studying the interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons

The two-particle momentum correlation functions between charm mesons ( D * ± and D ± ) and charged light-flavor mesons ( π ± and K ± ) in all charge combinations are measured for the first time by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV . For DK and D * K pairs, the experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the residual strong interaction based on quantum chromodynamics calculations on the lattice and chiral effective field theory. In the case of D π and D * π pairs, tension between the calculations including strong interactions and the measurement is observed. For all particle pairs, the data can be adequately described by Coulomb interaction only, indicating a shallow interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons. Finally, the scattering lengths governing the residual strong interaction of the D π and D * π systems are determined by fitting the experimental correlation functions with a model that employs a Gaussian potential. The extracted values are small and compatible with zero. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt charm hadrons in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production cross sections of D 0 , D + , and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (R pPb ) of non-prompt D 0 , D + , and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. The R pPb measurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significant p T dependence. The p T -integrated cross sections and p T -integrated R pPb of non-prompt D 0 and D + mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down to p T = 0. The non-prompt D-meson R pPb integrated over p T is compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt Λ$^{+}_{c}$/D 0 and D + /D 0 production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function of p T display a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system.

Measurement of the top-quark mass using decays with a J/ψ meson at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The top-quark mass is measured using top-quark decays producing an isolated lepton and J/ψ meson reconstructed in its μ+μ− decay mode. The data sample was recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The measurement is based on the invariant mass m(ℓμ+μ−) of the system made of the isolated lepton ℓ from the W boson decay and the non-isolated μ+μ− pair from a J/ψ decay of a b-hadron, exploiting its sensitivity to the top-quark mass. An unbinned maximum-likelihood fit to the m(ℓμ+μ−) distribution is performed to extract the top-quark mass. The top-quark mass is measured to be mtop = 172.17 ± 0.80 (stat) ± 0.81 (syst) ± 1.07 (recoil) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 1.56 GeV. The third uncertainty arises from changing the dipole parton shower gluon-recoil scheme used in top-quark decays.

Identified charged-hadron production in 𝑝+Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron (𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , 𝑝, $\bar{𝑝}$) production at midrapidity in 𝑝 + Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) and transverse-mass (𝑚 𝑇 ) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of 𝐾/𝜋 and 𝑝/𝜋 have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu + Au and U + U) and small (𝑝 + Al and 3 He + Au) collision systems. The values of 𝐾/𝜋 ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in 𝑝+𝑝 collisions. However, the values of 𝑝/𝜋 ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of ≈0.6, which is a factor of ≈2 larger than in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values over meson 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values was observed in central 3 He + Au, Cu + Au, and U + U collisions. Finally, the proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values measured in the 𝑝 + Al collision system were found to be consistent with 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values of 𝜙, 𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , and 𝜋 0 mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in 𝑝 + Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Neutral Pion Electroproduction Cross sections from 12 GeV Jefferson Lab for x B > 0 . 3

Nuclear physics aims at understanding structure of the building blocks of the atom, the protons and neutrons in terms of their constituents, the quarks and gluons. Traditionally, this was accomplished through studies of their static properties and the underlying one-dimensional quark and gluon momentum distributions. Over the last few decades, realization has grown that the true study of the proton dynamical structure has to come from more exclusive reactions. These deep exclusive processes describe a subset of unique inelastic processes in which all particles in their final state are detected. Such processes can allow access to Generalized Parton Distributions, or GPDs, a conceptual mechanism that lies at the root of three-dimensional spatial imaging of the proton?s quark-gluon substructure. In particular, photon electroproduction as well as meson electroproduction are two kinds of deep inelastic processes that can allow access to GPDs. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is a type of deep inelastic process, and is known as one of the cleanest ways to access GPDs.

Model-independent measurement of 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − decays at Belle and Belle II

We perform a model-independent measurement of the 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters using samples of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − -collision data collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments that have integrated luminosities of 951 fb −1 and 408 fb −1 , respectively. Approximately 2.05 × 10 6 neutral 𝐷 mesons are reconstructed in the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − channel, with the neutral 𝐷 flavor tagged by the charge of the pion in the 𝐷* + → 𝐷 0⁢ 𝜋 + decay. Assuming charge-parity symmetry, the mixing parameters are measured to be 𝑥 = (4.0 ±1.7 ±0.4) × 10 −3 and 𝑦 = (2.9 ±1.4 ±0.3) × 10 −3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous determinations.
