Dimensional changes (strain) along the three principal crystal axes of the antiferromagnet CsMnCl3-2H2O are studied as a function of magnetic field and temperature in the antiferromagnetic, spin flopped, and paramagnetic phases. Changes in dimensions through the phase transitions between the magnetic states are examined. By applying the molecular field model and utilizing all available information, magnetic properties of CsMnCl3-2H2O are determined. The possible usefulness of this material in a magnetic refrigeration cycle is evaluated.
Upper-limit charge exchange cross sections are calculated for Hg(+) on Mo and Cs(+) on Al. The cross sections are calculated from the polarization interaction at low ion energies (1 to 500 eV) and by assuming favorable curve crossings with a hard-core reaction radius at higher energies (500 eV to 10 keV). The cross sections for Hg(+) on Mo becomes greater than corresponding Hg Hg(+) resonance values at ion energies below 2 eV, whereas the Cs(+) Al values remain considerably lower than the Cs(+)Cs resonance value at all ion energies. It is also shown that charge exchange of slow Hg(+) with Mo may be important for spacecraft with electron bombardment thrusters.

The possible use of CsI to discriminate between high energy cosmic ray electrons and interacting protons has been investigated. The pulse-shape properties as a function of ionization density, temperature, and spectral response are presented for thallium-activated CsI and as a function of ionization density for sodium-activated CsI. The results are based on previously published data and on corroborative measurements from the present work. Experimental results on the response of CsI to electron-induced electromagnetic cascades and to interacting hadrons are described. Bibliographies of publications dealing with the properties of CsI and with pulse-shape discrimination techniques are presented.

Zinc-doped InGaAsP quaternary III-V material of the proper composition range shows superior photoemission properties to either InGaAs or InAsP ternary material. The minority-carrier diffusion length in the quaternary material is at least as long as that in InAsP and much longer than observed in InGaAs. The barrier height at the InGaAsP-Cs2O interface is lowered by cooling, giving increased electron escape probability and new highs in quantum efficiency over a wide wavelength range. For example, a 1.06-micron quantum efficiency of 7.5%/incident photon was observed at -90 C.

Results from tests of the first variable-gap diminiode at an initial interelectrode spacing of 0.23 millimeter indicate sharply defined, relatively low ultimate power points. This characteristic supports the value of the diminiode as a well-controlled tool for thermionic-conversion research and development.
An investigation of spatial irregularity of VLF phase due to nearby objects and terrain is discussed. It is shown that the phase is regular to the microsecond accuracy of the instrumentation, and that a grounded steel tower in close proximity to a whip antenna will not affect the phase measurement. However, antennas coupling to trees may cause an anomalous phase shift.
The value of percent seed, oxygen to fuel ratio, combustion pressure, Mach number, and magnetic field strength which maximize either the electrical conductivity or power density at the entrance of an MHD power generator was obtained. The working fluid is the combustion product of H2 and O2 seeded with CsOH. The ideal theoretical segmented Faraday generator along with an empirical form found from correlating the data of many experimenters working with generators of different sizes, electrode configurations, and working fluids, are investigated. The conductivity and power densities optimize at a seed fraction of 3.5 mole percent and an oxygen to hydrogen weight ratio of 7.5. The optimum values of combustion pressure and Mach number depend on the operating magnetic field strength.
