Part I: Predicting performance of Purolite A532E resins for remediation of comingled contaminants in groundwater

Ion exchange (IX) resins are used in pump-and-treat (P&T) facilities to remove soluble groundwater contaminants. However, natural anions present at concentrations orders of magnitude higher than contaminants can compete for IX sites and impact resin lifecycles. Here, the Hanford Site’s 200 West Area P&T facility (Washington State, USA) was selected as a case study because it currently uses two IX resins: Purolite® A532E (A532E) to remove pertechnetate (TcO 4 - ) and DOWEX 21K (DOWEX) to remove uranium from groundwater. Nitrate (NO 3 - ), sulfate (SO 4 2- ), chloride (Cl - ), and carbonate (CO 3 2- ) anions have been identified to potentially compete for A532E and DOWEX IX sites. Hanford-relevant anion groundwater concentrations were used to design a series of laboratory-scale batch experiments to evaluate the impact of competing anions on resin performance and potential kinetic effects. These data are then modeled to obtain Cl--normalized equilibrium exchange coefficients (K) needed to predict IX resin performance. The work is presented in two parts, with IX performance evaluated for A532E in Part I and DOWEX in Part II. Part I results demonstrate that TcO 4 - uptake is not impacted by NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , Cl - , CO 3 2- (as HCO 3 - ) and U(VI) carbonate anions, with K TcO4-/Cl- > 4,000, likely due to the high selectivity of A532E trihexylammonium sites for the large, weakly hydrated TcO 4 - anion. Other anion K values were K NO3-/Cl- = 20, K SO4--/Cl- = 0.2, K HCO3-/Cl- = 0.09, K U/Cl- = 370–1000. These K values provide conservative parameters for predicting A532E performance, and demonstrate that, under these test conditions, A532E will remove TcO 4 - from current and future influent streams to meet groundwater treatment objectives.

Magnetosynthesis Effect on the Structure and Ground State of Cu 2+ -Based Antiferromagnets

Synthetic variables can have an outsized influence on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of a material, particularly those of quantum materials. In this work, we investigate the impact of synthesis under a magnetic field (magnetosynthesis) on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of several Cu 2+ (S = 1/2)-based materials with antiferromagnetic interactions and varying levels of magnetic frustration, from simple antiferromagnets to a quantum spin liquid. Here, we develop methods to apply small (0.09–0.37 T) magnetic fields during low-temperature hydrothermal, evaporative, and rehydration syntheses of the simple antiferromagnet CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O, the canted antiferromagnet (Cu,Zn) 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O, the frustrated and canted antiferromagnet atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl, and the highly frustrated quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite Cu 3 Zn(OH) 6 Cl 2 . We report the first single-crystal X-ray structural determination of the Cu 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O structure type and probe the stability of this phase both experimentally and computationally. Atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl synthesized under a 0.19 T field experiences a 0.15 K (∼3%) decrease in its Néel transition temperature. This result suggests that magnetosynthesis with small applied fields may have a very subtle influence upon the magnetic properties of moderately magnetically frustrated 3 d materials.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic and Selective CO 2 -to-CO Reduction by a Rhenium(I) Complex Bearing 6,6′-Substituted 2,2′-Bipyridines

The electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR) into value-added chemicals offers a promising route toward a circular carbon economy and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. A detailed understanding of the structural and electronic factors governing the performance of molecular CO 2 RR electrocatalysts is essential for the design of efficient, tunable systems. Here, in this study, we report a series of rhenium(I) complexes, fac-[Re I (6,6′-(R) 2 -bpy)(CO) 3 Cl] (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine; R = mesityl (mes), 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl (trip), or isophthalic acid (phth)) and evaluate their electrocatalytic activity. Among these, fac-[Re I (6,6′-(mes) 2 -bpy)(CO) 3 Cl] exhibited the highest performance, enabling selective CO 2 -to-CO conversion for 1 hour with Faradaic efficiency (FE) > 97%, representing an unprecedented activity level for a Re-bpy catalysts. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that favorable CO 2 binding could be promoted by the tilting of the 6,6′-(mes)2-bpy ligand (from the Re-CO coordination plane), providing mechanistic insight into the observed enhancement. The study consequently demonstrates a rational correlation between the CO 2 electrocatalytic performance of Re-bpy catalysts and their structural variations, as derived from X-ray data and corroborated by computational modeling.

Association of Cl with C 2 H 2 by unified variable-reaction-coordinate and reaction-path variational transition-state theory

Significance A key issue in chemical kinetics is advancing the theoretical framework to handle reactions beyond the domain of textbook transition-state theory by including––for example––anharmonicity, barrierless transition states, transition states in series, and the effect of conformational flexibility on equilibrium constants. Other key issues are validating affordable electronic structure methods for direct dynamics and the direct calculation of high-pressure limiting rate constants, which are often obtainable experimentally only by extrapolation. The present article addresses all these issues for a prototype radical–molecule association reaction and thereby demonstrates how to combine improved theoretical methods to provide rate constants in cases where experimental data are uncertain or missing.

Syntheses, solution behavior, and computational bond length analyses of trifluoromethyl and perfluoroethyl cuprate salts

Heteroleptic cuprate salts of the form [X-Cu-Y][(SIMes) 2 Cu] (SIMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene, X and Y = permutations of Cl, CF 3 , C 2 F 5 ) were generated by equilibrating mixtures of [(SIMes)Cu-X] and [(SIMes)Cu-Y] in CD 2 Cl 2 solvent. Here, the solubility features of the cuprates relative to the neutral species permitted the structural characterizations of new cuprates, including the first example of a mixed fluoroalkylated cuprate [(CF 3 )Cu(C 2 F 5 )][(SIMes) 2 Cu]. Computational studies (DFT and CCSD(T)) of fluoroalkylated cuprates generate Cu-C distances that are shorter than those in hydrocarbon analogues – a trend that in some cases may conflict with crystallographically determined values.

Insensitivity of Magnetic Coupling to Ligand Substitution in a Series of Tetraoxolene Radical-Bridged Fe 2 Complexes

The elucidation of magnetostructural correlations between bridging ligand substitution and strength of magnetic coupling is essential to the development of high-temperature molecule-based magnetic materials. Toward this end, we report the series of tetraoxolene-bridged Fe II 2 complexes [(Me 3 TPyA) 2 Fe 2 ( R L)] n + (Me 3 TPyA = tris(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine; n = 2: OMe LH 2 = 3,6-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinone, Cl LH 2 = 3,6-dichloro-2,5-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinone, Na 2 [ NO 2 L] = sodium 3,6-dinitro-2,5-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinone; n = 4: SMe 2 L = 3,6-bis(dimethylsulfonium)-2,5-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinone diylide) and their one-electron-reduced analogues. Furthermore, variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility data reveal the presence of weak ferromagnetic superexchange between Fe II centers in the oxidized species, with exchange constants of J = +1.2(2) (R = OMe, Cl) and +0.3(1) (R = NO 2 , SMe 2 ) cm –1 . In contrast, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and Mössbauer spectroscopy establish a ligand-centered radical in the reduced complexes. Magnetic measurements for the radical-bridged species reveal the presence of strong antiferromagnetic metal–radical coupling, with J = -57(10), -60(7), -58(6), and -65(8) cm –1 for R = OMe, Cl, NO 2 , and SMe 2 , respectively. The minimal effects of substituents in the 3- and 6-positions of R L x –• on the magnetic coupling strength is understood through electronic structure calculations, which show negligible spin density on the substituents and associated C atoms of the ring. Finally, the radical-bridged complexes are single-molecule magnets, with relaxation barriers of U eff = 50(1), 41(1), 38(1), and 33(1) cm –1 for R = OMe, Cl, NO 2 , and SMe 2 , respectively. Taken together, these results provide the first examination of how bridging ligand substitution influences magnetic coupling in semiquinoid-bridged compounds, and they establish design criteria for the synthesis of semiquinoid-based molecules and materials.

Preparation, characterization, and structural studies of new ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) complexes incorporating pyrazole ligands

Multimetallic complexes containing disparate metals have been established to have practical utilities. We previously reported a strategy for preparing such species by using combinations of neutral pyrazole (Hpyz, C 3 N 2 H 4 ) and anionic pyrazolyl ligands (pyz, C 3 N 2 H 3 – ), and herein are reported several new complexes that should be capable of incorporating a second metal center. Two of the complexes, [Ru(1,5-cod)(Hpyz) 3 Cl][BPh 4 ] and Ru(1,5-cod)(Hpyz) 2 (pyz) 2 (cod = cyclooctadiene), were prepared from [Ru(cod)Cl 2 ] 2 , while [Ru(tmeda)(Hpyz) 2 Cl 2 ][BF 4 ] (tmeda = tetramethylethylenediamine) was prepared from the neutral Ru(II) complex Ru(tmeda)(Hpyz) 2 Cl 2 via one electron oxidation by the ferricinium ion. The first two complexes, one cationic and the other uncharged, involve Ru(II), while the tmeda complex involves Ru(III). Finally, all three species have been structurally characterized.

Electronic Structure Tuning of Lanthanidocene Photocatalysts for C–F Bond Cleavage

A set of nine new robust, tunable cerium complexes supported by an ansa-bis(cyclopentadienyl) ligand, [Me 2 Si(η 5 -Cp R ) 2 ]CeX ( an Cp R )CeX, are excellent homogeneous visible-light photocatalysts for the monodefluoroalkylation of trifluorotoluene with Mg(CH 2 C 6 H 5 ) 2 THF 2 (R = Me 4 , SiMe 3 , X = N(SiMe 3 ) 2 (N″), X = CH(SiMe 3 ) 2 (R''), Cl, OC 6 H 2 t Bu 2 -2,6,Me-4 (OAr)). The trends in photocatalytic activity within the series are explained by photophysical spectroscopic analyses. The aryloxide complex [Me 2 Si(Cp SiMe3 ) 2 ]CeOAr, which has the highest activity (95% substrate conversion in 27 h), shows the most negative (most reducing) excited-state reduction potential (-2.71 V vs Fc). The precatalyst excited-state lifetimes are also exceptionally long. Detailed photoluminescence, NMR spectroscopic, and kinetic studies on chloride [Me 2 Si(Cp Me4 ) 2 ]CeCl suggest that the "ate" complex [{Me 2 Si(Cp Me4 ) 2 } 2 Ce III ClBn][MgBn] is the active catalyst in the alkylation reaction to form PhCF 2 CH 2 Ph with high selectivity over PhCF 2 H. Finally, the reaction rates are up to 30 times higher than previously reported for organometallic rare-earth photocatalysts for these Ce complexes and comparable to established Ir-based photoredox systems.

Interfacial Charge Transfer Pathways in Photoelectrochemical H 2 Evolution by a Single-Component Molecular Catalyst on a Conductive Metal Oxide

Dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cells traditionally combine a photosensitizing dye to harvest light and a catalyst to generate chemical fuels on a semiconductor. Here, in this work, a photoactive catalyst capable of both light absorption and fuel formation, [Cp*Ir(4,4′-Y 2 -bpy)Cl][Cl] (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, Y = CH 2 PO 3 H 2 ), is anchored to a mesoporous tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) electrode and facilitates photoelectrochemical H 2 evolution in water without the need for additional photosensitizers or sacrificial reductants. Spectroelectrochemistry indicates a single-site H 2 evolution mechanism involving charge injection to ITO, in contrast to the bimetallic mechanism observed in solution. Cyclic voltammetry and variable-potential chronoamperometry under illumination probe competing pathways via interfacial electron transfer between the Ir hydride excited state and the conductive ITO electrode. A Marcus theory framework provides reorganization energies for competing interfacial electron transfer pathways from potential-dependent quantum yield measurements. The light-driven H 2 evolution catalysis on conducting oxide proceeds with high Faradaic efficiency and current densities comparable to photoelectrodes utilizing p-type semiconductors. By uncovering the principal electron transfer pathways that govern photocatalytic efficiency, this study establishes design principles for hybrid molecular photoelectrocatalysts.

Dark energy survey: Modeling strategy for multiprobe cluster cosmology and validation for the full six-year dataset

Here, we introduce an updated To&Krause2021 model for joint analyses of cluster abundances and large-scale two-point correlations of weak lensing and galaxy and cluster clustering (termed CL+3×2 pt analysis) and validate that this model meets the systematic accuracy requirements of analyses with the statistical precision of the final Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 6 (Y6) dataset. The validation program consists of two distinct approaches, (i) identification of modeling and parametrization choices and impact studies using simulated analyses with each possible model misspecification and (ii) end-to-end validation using mock catalogs from customized Cardinal simulations that incorporate realistic galaxy populations and DES-Y6-specific galaxy and cluster selection and photometric redshift modeling, which are the key observational systematics. In combination, these validation tests indicate that the model presented here meets the accuracy requirements of DES-Y6 for CL+3×2 pt based on a large list of tests for known systematics. In addition, we also validate that the model is sufficient for several other data combinations: the CL+GC subset of this data vector (excluding galaxy–galaxy lensing and cosmic shear two-point statistics) and the CL+3×2 pt+BAO+SN (combination of CL+3×2 pt with the previously published Y6 DES baryonic acoustic oscillation and Y5 supernovae data).

K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br): All-Inorganic Lead-Free Blue Emitters with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Recently, copper(I) halides have been gaining increased attention as highly luminescent nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. In this paper, we report preparation of blue emitting, lead free, all-inorganic halides K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br) through five synthetic methods including traditional solid-state and solution methods. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra of K 2 CuCl 3 and K 2 CuBr 3 exhibit narrow peaks centered at 392 and 388 nm with full widths at half-maximum (fwhm) values of ~54 nm. The visible bright blue emission is corroborated by the remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values up to ~97%. Furthermore, radioluminescence measurements on K 2 CuCl 3 yield a bright peak at 404 nm under irradiation with X-rays at 200 kVp and 20 mA, which is optimal for use with PMTs and Si photomultipliers, suggesting a strong potential of this family for radiation detection applications. Based on our combined experimental and computational investigations, the origin of the efficient luminescence in K 2 CuX 3 is attributed to the high stability self-trapped excitons (STE) formed in the one-dimensional anionic ∞ 1 [CuX 3 ] 2– chains. Advantageously, K 2 CuX 3 demonstrate improved air- and photostability compared to the previously reported copper(I) halides. The discovery of highly efficient and high stability light emitters based on earth-abundant copper(I) halides paves the way for their potential practical applications.

Lattice Dynamics and Optoelectronic Properties of Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl – , Br – , I – ) Single Crystals

The soft, dynamic lattice of inorganic lead halide perovskite CsPbX 3 (X = Cl ⁻ , Br ⁻ , I ⁻ ) leads to the emergence of many interesting photophysical and optoelectronic phenomena. However, probing their lattice dynamics with vibrational spectroscopy remains challenging. The influence of the fundamental octahedral building block in the perovskite lattice can be better resolved in zero-dimensional (0D) vacancy-ordered double perovskites of form A 2 BX 6 . Here we study Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl ⁻ , Br ⁻ , I ⁻ ) single crystals to yield detailed insight into the fundamental octahedral building block and to explore the effect that its isolation in the crystal structure has on structural and electronic properties. The isolated [TeX 6 ] 2- octahedral units serve as the vibrational, absorbing, and emitting centers within the crystal. Serving as the vibrational centers, the isolated octahedra inform the likelihood of a random distribution of 10 octahedral symmetries within the mixed-halide spaces, as well as the presence of strong exciton-phonon coupling and anharmonic lattice dynamics. Serving as the absorbing and emitting centers, the isolated octahedra exhibit compositionally tunable absorption (1.50-3.15 eV) and emission (1.31-2.11 eV) energies. Due to greater molecular orbital overlap between neighboring octahedra with increasing halide anion size, there is a transition from a more molecule-like electronic structure in Cs 2 TeCl 6 and Cs 2 TeBr 6 -as expected from the effective 0D nature of these single crystals-to a dispersive electronic structure in Cs 2 TeI 6 , typical of three-dimensional (3D) bulk single crystals.

Inorganic Halide Double Perovskites with Optoelectronic Properties Modulated by Sublattice Mixing

All-inorganic halide double perovskites have emerged as a promising class of materials that are potentially more stable and less toxic than lead-containing hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite optoelectronic materials. In this work, 311 cesium chloride double perovskites (Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 ) were selected from a set of 903 compounds as likely being stable on the basis of a statistically learned tolerance factor (t) for perovskite stability. First-principles calculations on these 311 double perovskites were then performed to assess their stability and identify candidates with band gaps appropriate for optoelectronic applications. We predict that 261 of the 311 Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 compounds are likely synthesizable on the basis of a thermodynamic analysis of their decomposition to competing compounds (decomposition enthalpy <0.05 eV/atom). Of these 261 likely synthesizable compounds, 47 contain no toxic elements and have direct or nearly direct (within 100 meV) band gaps between 1 and 3 eV, as computed with hybrid density functional theory (HSE06). Within this set, we identify the triple-alkali perovskites Cs 2 [Alk] + [TM] 3+ Cl 6 , where Alk is a group 1 alkali cation and TM is a transition-metal cation, as a class of Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 double perovskites with remarkable optical properties, including large and tunable exciton binding energies as computed by the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) method. We attribute the unusual electronic structure of these compounds to the mixing of the Alk-Cl and TM-Cl sublattices, leading to materials with small band gaps, large exciton binding energies, and absorption spectra that are strongly influenced by the identity of the transition metal. The role of the double-perovskite structure in enabling these unique properties is probed through an analysis of the electronic structures and chemical bonding of these compounds in comparison with other transition-metal and alkali transition-metal halides.

Stabilization of [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– (X = H, F, Cl, Br) by Conjugation and Hyperconjugation Effects

The isolation of nucleophilic boron bases has led to a paradigm shift in boron chemistry. Previous studies of the bis(carbene) borylene complexes revealed that these compounds possess strong donor abilities, and their reaction inertness is due to the large steric hindrance between boron reagents and reactant. In the present study, we have theoretically studied the [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– compounds (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Their electronic structures and properties are discussed by using the NBO, LOL, and ELF methods. We found that both π-conjugation and hyperconjugation effects can effectively stabilize the substituted nucleophilic anionic boron compounds [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– . Substituents, especially X = H, stabilize the boron center through highly delocalized π-bonding, involving the formally “empty” in-plane p orbitals of the boron atom. While the halogen substituents have high electron withdrawal ability, leading to systems being less stable, we suggest the borinium anions [(N 5 ) 2 BH] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 H 2 ] 2– as possible synthetic targets of novel environmentally friendly catalysts.
