SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual - Version 4.58

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Space telescope - The next generation

The command handling approach as applied to fine guidance sensor guide star acquisition is described in order to illustrate the flexibility it provides to users of the Space Telescope. User control of pointing operations is detailed, and the pointing control system/fine guidance system interface is depicted along with the guide star acquisition sequence. Reaction wheel interaction with vehicle structural modes and the rate gyro assembly noise level are discussed and some test data are shown.

Reducing Development and Operations Costs using NASA's "GMSEC" Systems Architecture

This viewgraph presentation reviews the role of Goddard Mission Services Evolution Center (GMSEC) in reducing development and operation costs in handling the massive data from NASA missions. The goals of GMSEC systems architecture development are to (1) Simplify integration and development, (2)Facilitate technology infusion over time, (3) Support evolving operational concepts, and (4) All for mix of heritage, COTS and new components. First 3 missions (i.e., Tropical Rainforest Measuring Mission (TRMM), Small Explorer (SMEX) missions - SWAS, TRACE, SAMPEX, and ST5 3-Satellite Constellation System) each selected a different telemetry and command system. These results show that GMSEC's message-bus component-based framework architecture is well proven and provides significant benefits over traditional flight and ground data system designs. The missions benefit through increased set of product options, enhanced automation, lower cost and new mission-enabling operations concept options .

A GSTDN/TDRSS compatible RF system for the Solar Maximum Mission /SMM/

The Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) is a major NASA observatory to be launched in late 1979. SMM will be supported by NASA's existing Ground Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (GSTDN) and the planned Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). Design of a GSTDN/TDRSS compatible RF system for SMM poses multiple problems related to the complex nature of the observatory command, telemetry, and tracking support requirements and the fundamental differences in signal design, antenna characteristics, data rates, and link performance criteria for GSTDN vs. TDRSS support. The RF system described in this paper achieves full compatibility with a minimum of hardware complexity by use of an integrated antenna system, the NASA standard S-Band transponder, and utilization of both the single access and multiple access support capabilities of the TDRSS to handle both real time data and tape recorder dumps.

Automated Commanding of the SMAP Spacecraft Enables Efficient, Reliable, and Responsive Operations

The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission developed and deployed a system to autonomously handle most routine commanding of the observatory. This system of ground software is able to build commands, validate them, and radiate the commands to the spacecraft, all without human interaction. In the case of an off -nominal scenario, the system will abort gracefully and notify the mission operations team of the problem. The system was phased into operations during the first three months of the SMAP mission and handles over 90% of the weekly commanding of the vehicle. The gradual introduction of the automation in flight, along with an extensive test campaign, was instrumental in the success of the software. The automation has enabled substantial efficiencies in operations team staffing and has improved reliability by removing the potential for human error. The system also allows the SMAP project to be more responsive which has shown significant benefits in areas of data latency and science accuracy.

PLOT3D user's manual

PLOT3D is a computer graphics program designed to visualize the grids and solutions of computational fluid dynamics. Seventy-four functions are available. Versions are available for many systems. PLOT3D can handle multiple grids with a million or more grid points, and can produce varieties of model renderings, such as wireframe or flat shaded. Output from PLOT3D can be used in animation programs. The first part of this manual is a tutorial that takes the reader, keystroke by keystroke, through a PLOT3D session. The second part of the manual contains reference chapters, including the helpfile, data file formats, advice on changing PLOT3D, and sample command files.
