This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented by staff members of the NACA Laboratories at the NACA Conference on High-Speed Aerodynamics held at the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory of the NACA, March 18, 19, and 20, 1958. The primary purpose of the conference was to convey to the military services and their contractors the results of recent research and to provide those attending with an opportunity to discuss the results.

State-of-the art on phase locked loops PLL is reported by summarizing some specific results. Following a statement of the overall analysis and design objectives, results are presented in a format identifying working terminology, inherent assumptions, and references for each result. The use of PLL in tracking, synchronization, and demodulation is reemphasized, as well as the mathematical challenge involved in solving nonlinear stochastic differential equations.
A collection of articles concerning the methods and uses of aerospace bonding and joining techniques in industrial processes is presented. Data include methods to bond and join metal components, joining techniques for adhesive materials, and shop hints for bonding and joining a variety of other items and materials.
Electronic signal generator data based on solid state concepts were simplified or refined to meet requirements, such as reliability, simplicity, fail-safe characteristics, and the capability of withstanding environmental extremes. Pulse generators, high voltage pulse generators, oscillators, analog signal generators, square wave signal generators, and special function signal generators are described.
Several types of amplifiers and amplifier systems are considered. These include preamplifiers, high power amplifiers, buffer and isolation amplifiers, amplifier circuits, and general purpose amplifiers.
Various devices and techniques are described for testing hardware and components in four special environments: low temperature, high temperature, high pressure, and vibration. Items ranging from an automatic calibrator for pressure transducers to a fixture for testing the susceptibility of materials to ignition by electric spark are included.
Technology on fasteners and fastening devices is presented, as part of NASA's TU program to provide technical information on devices, methods, and techniques resulting from aerospace research. The material is divided into two sections which include: (1) data concerning a selected group of fasteners and concept for fasteners such as locking devices, couplings, and connect and release mechanisms; and (2) discussions on a number of fastening techniques such as those for mounting panel lamps, clamping flange bolts, stretching fasteners, and transferring fuel from a tanker to another vehicle.
The methods, techniques, and devices used in testing various electrical and electronic apparatus are presented. The items described range from semiconductor package leak detectors to automatic circuit analyzer and antenna simulators for system checkout. In many cases the approaches can result in considerable cost savings and improved quality control. The testing of various electronic components, assemblies, and systems; the testing of various electrical devices; and the testing of cables and connectors are explained.
The characteristics and applications of transducers are discussed. Subjects presented are: (1) thermal measurements, (2) liquid level and fluid flow measurements, (3) pressure transducers, (4) stress-strain measurements, (5) acceleration and velocity measurements, (6) displacement and angular rotation, and (7) transducer test and calibration methods.
An up-to-date listing of the spectra obtained in the spectroscopy laboratory and a complete description of the experimental conditions are presented.
A selection of new hand tools, modifications of existing tools, and techniques developed in the course of NASA research and development projects are presented. The items are presented in two sections: tools for cable and connector applications, and tools for welding applications. Safety is emphasized, together with ease of operation and use in restricted areas or hazardous environments. The discussions are directed primarily toward the technician engaged in assembly or maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment.
