Crystalline phase transitions and water-soluble complexes of copper(Ⅰ) 2-hydroxyethanethiolate

We report the coordination polymer copper(I) 2-hydroxyethanethiolate, (CuSCH 2 CH 2 OH) n , though insoluble in all common solvents, dissolved readily in basic aqueous solutions of the thiolate anion (HOCH 2 CH 2 S – ) of 2-mercaptoethanol to form a single species: the tetranuclear cluster [Cu 4 (μ-SCH 2 CH 2 OH) 6 ] 2– . From this solution were grown X-ray quality single crystals of copper(I) 2-hydroxyethanethiolate. This compound underwent a hitherto unknown crystal phase transition at ca. 6 °C, from point group P2 1 2 1 2 1 to Pna2 1 , with noticeable changes in the geometry of the Cu-S layer and in the orientation of the alkylthiolate side chains. When the bulky base tetrabutylammonium hydroxide was employed in the aqueous thiolate solution used to dissolve (CuSCH 2 CH 2 OH) n , the water-soluble polynuclear copper(I) complex bis(tetrabutylammonium) hexakis(μ-2-hydroxyethanethiolato) tetracuprate(I), [(C 4 H 9 ) 4 N] 2 [Cu 4 (μ-SCH 2 CH 2 OH) 6 ], could be isolated as X-ray quality crystals. Structural characterization of this complex revealed a tetrahedral arrangement of copper(I) centers with thiolates bridging the edges of the tetrahedra. On standing, this complex degraded to a larger polynuclear Cu(I) sulfide cluster.

Observation of Iso-Symmetric Structural and Lifshitz Transitions in Quasi-One-Dimensional CrNbSe 5

Chalcogenides-rich transition metal compounds host a rich landscape of emergent quantum phenomena that are intimately governed by their quasi-onedimensional chemical-bonding frameworks and their response to external perturbations such as pressure. Here, we report a pressure-induced iso-symmetric structural transition in the quasi-one-dimensional compound CrNbSe 5 , in which the electronic ground state is controlled not by symmetry breaking but by a continuous reorganization of local bonding interactions. Applied pressure reversibly tunes CrNbSe 5 between semiconducting and semimetallic states, enabling access to low- and high-carrier electronic regimes through direct modulation of metal−chalcogen bonding. High-pressure singlecrystal X-ray diffraction directly resolves the evolution of Cr−Se and Nb−Se bond distances, coordination polyhedra, and connectivity, revealing a fully reversible semimetal−semiconductor−semimetal transition driven by gradual yet cooperative bond rearrangements within a preserved crystallographic symmetry. In contrast to chemical substitution, which irreversibly alters composition and introduces disorder, pressure acts as a clean, continuous control parameter that reshapes the bonding landscape without disrupting structural symmetry. These results establish CrNbSe 5 as a model system for electronically driven phase switching via tunable chemical bonding, highlighting iso-symmetric bond reorganization as a powerful design principle for pressure-controlled electronic and spintronic functionalities.

Polyethylene Upcycling to Liquid Alkanes in Molten Salts under Neat and External Hydrogen Source-Free Conditions

Development of facile approaches to convert plastic waste into liquid fuels under neat conditions is highly desired but challenging, particularly without noble metal catalysts and an external hydrogen source. Herein, highly efficient and selective polyethylene-to-gasoline oil (branched C 6 –C 12 alkanes) conversion was achieved under mild conditions (<170 °C) using commercially available AlCl 3 -containing molten salts as reaction media and to provide catalytic sites (no extra solvents, additives, or hydrogen feeding). The high catalytic efficiency and selectivity was ensured by the abundant active Al sites with strong Lewis acidity (comparable to the Al type in acidic zeolite) and highly ionic nature of the molten salts to stabilize the carbenium intermediates. Dynamic genesis of the Al sites was elucidated via time-resolved Al K-edge soft X-ray and 27 Al NMR, confirming the tricoordinated Al 3+ as active sites and its coordination with the as-generated alkene/aromatic intermediates. Further, the carbenium formation and polyethylene chain variation was illustrated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and an isotope-labeling experiment. Theoretical simulations further demonstrated the successive hydride abstraction, β-scission, isomerization, and internal hydrogen transfer reaction pathway with AlCl 3 as active sites. This facile catalytic system can further achieve the conversion of robust, densely assembled, and high molecular weight plastic model compounds to liquid alkane products in the diesel range.

Correlating Macro and Atomic Structure with Elastic Properties and Ionic Transport of Glassy Li 2 S‐P 2 S 5 (LPS) Solid Electrolyte for Solid‐State Li Metal Batteries

Abstract A combination of high ionic conductivity and facile processing suggest that sulfide‐based materials are promising solid electrolytes that have the potential to enable Li metal batteries. Although the Li 2 S‐P 2 S 5 (LPS) family of compounds exhibit desirable characteristics, it is known that Li metal preferentially propagates through microstructural defects, such as particle boundaries and/or pores. Herein, it is demonstrated that a near theoretical density (98% relative density) LPS 75‐25 glassy electrolyte exhibiting high ionic conductivity can be achieved by optimizing the molding pressure and temperature. The optimal molding pressure reduces porosity and particle boundaries while preserving the preferred amorphous structure. Moreover, molecular rearrangements and favorable Li coordination environments for conduction are attained. Consequently, the Young's Modulus approximately doubles (30 GPa) and the ionic conductivity increases by a factor of five (1.1 mS cm −1 ) compared to conventional room temperature molding conditions. It is believed that this study can provide mechanistic insight into processing‐structure‐property relationships that can be used as a guide to tune microstructural defects/properties that have been identified to have an effect on the maximum charging current that a solid electrolyte can withstand during cycling without short‐circuiting.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of the Zintl Phases NaSrSb, NaBaSb and NaEuSb

This work details the synthesis and the crystal structures of the ternary compounds NaSrSb, NaBaSb and NaEuSb. They are isostructural and adopt the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure (space group P6¯2m; Pearson code hP9). The structure determination in all three cases was performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The structure features isolated Sb3– anions arranged in layers stacked along the crystallographic c-axis. In the interstices, alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations are found in tetrahedral and square pyramidal coordination environments, respectively. The formal partitioning of the valence electrons adheres to the valence rules, i.e., Na+Sr2+Sb3–, Na+Ba2+Sb3– and Na+Eu2+Sb3– can be considered as Zintl phases with intrinsic semiconductor behavior. Electronic band structure calculations conducted for NaBaSb are consistent with this notion and show a direct gap of approx. 0.9 eV. Additionally, the calculations hint at possible inverted Dirac cones, a feature that is reminiscent of topological quantum materials.

High-Pressure Effects on an Octa-Hydrated Curium Complex: An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

An octa-hydrated curium compound [Cm(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)(dtp)·H 2 O (Cm1,H 2 dtp = 2,3-di(tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine) along with its lanthanide analogues [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)-(dtp)·H 2 O (Ln1, Ln 3+ = La 3+ –Nd 3+ , Sm 3+ –Lu 3+ ) were synthesized and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. Bond length analysis of VIII Cm(III)–OH 2 (where VIII refers to the coordination number) was compared to VIII Ln(III)–OH 2 (Ln 3+ = Nd 3+ and Sm 3+ ), indicating similar VIII M(III)–OH 2 bond lengths owing to the similar eight-coordinate ionic radii of these VIII M(III) cations. Owing to the reduced coordination number, the VIII Cm(III)–OH 2 bond lengths were shorter than previously reported IX Cm(III)–OH 2 bonds in [Cm(H 2 O) 9 ](CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 . The octa-aquo complexes were also characterized by solid-state UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy in addition to variable-temperature and variable-pressure photoluminescence. Variable-pressure absorption spectra of Cm1 were compared with Ln1 and show that the Cm(III) f → f transitions have a stronger dependence on pressure than that observed in Ln1 (Ln 3+ = Nd 3+ and Sm 3+ ). The experimental and computational analyses reveal that the monotonic decrease in the computed energy difference between the ground state and the first excited state corresponds to the observed red shift of the photoluminescence peak. This is accompanied by a gradual reduction in the average Cm(III)–OH 2 bond length and a delocalization of spin densities, alongside an intensified interaction involving the 5f orbitals under increasing pressure. Furthermore, these changes accommodate the new geometry and collectively modify the energy landscape, resulting in peak broadening and quenching.

Ir 6 In 32 S 21 , a polar, metal-rich semiconducting subchalcogenide

Subchalcogenides are uncommon, and their chemical bonding results from an interplay between metal–metal and metal–chalcogenide interactions. Herein, we present Ir 6 In 32 S 21 , a novel semiconducting subchalcogenide compound that crystallizes in a new structure type in the polar P31m space group, with unit cell parameters a = 13.9378(12) Å, c = 8.2316(8) Å, α = β = 90°, γ = 120°. The compound has a large band gap of 1.48(2) eV, and photoemission and Kelvin probe measurements corroborate this semiconducting behavior with a valence band maximum (VBM) of –4.95(5) eV, conduction band minimum of –3.47(5) eV, and a photoresponse shift of the Fermi level by ~0.2 eV in the presence of white light. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows absorption edges for In and Ir do not indicate clear oxidation states, suggesting that the numerous coordination environments of Ir 6 In 32 S 21 make such assignments ambiguous. Electronic structure calculations confirm the semiconducting character with a nearly direct band gap, and electron localization function (ELF) analysis suggests that the origin of the gap is the result of electron transfer from the In atoms to the S 3p and Ir 5d orbitals. DFT calculations indicate that the average hole effective masses near the VBM (1.19m e ) are substantially smaller than the average electron masses near the CBM (2.51m e ), an unusual feature for most semiconductors. The crystal and electronic structure of Ir 6 In 32 S 21 , along with spectroscopic data, suggest that it is neither a true intermetallic nor a classical semiconductor, but somewhere in between those two extremes.

Dinitrogen Binding and Functionalization from a Low-Coordinate Alkynyliron Complex

Alkynyl complexes of low-coordinate transition metals offer a sterically open environment and interesting bonding opportunities. Here, in this work, we explore the capacity of iron(I) alkynyl complexes to bind N 2 and isolate a N 2 complex including its X-ray crystal structure. Silylation of the N 2 complex gives an isolable, formally iron(IV) complex with a disilylhydrazido(2−) ligand, but natural bond orbital analysis indicates that an iron(II) formulation is preferable. The structure of this compound is similar to an earlier reported phenyl complex in which phenyl migration forms a new N–C bond, but the alkynyl group does not migrate. DFT calculations are used to test the possible reasons why the alkynyl is resistant to migration, and these show that the large Fe–C bond energy in the alkynyl complex is a factor that could contribute to the lack of migration.

A combinatory ferroelectric compound bridging simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite

The simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered AA' 3 B 4 O 12 perovskites represent two types of classical perovskite functional materials. There are well-known simple perovskites with ferroelectric properties, while there is still no report of ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking transition in A-site-ordered quadruple perovskites. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of an A-site-ordered perovskite PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 , the only known quadruple perovskite that transforms from high-temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase to low-temperature non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric phase. The coordination chemistry of Hg 2+ is changed from square planar as in typical A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite to a rare stereo type with 8 ligands in PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 . Thus PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 appears to be a combinatory link from simple ABO 3 perovskites to A-site-ordered AA' 3 Ti 4 O 12 perovskites, sharing both displacive ferroelectricity with former and structure coordination with latter. This is the only example so far showing ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking phase transition in AA' 3 B 4 O 12 -type A-site-ordered perovskites, and opens a direction to search for ferroelectric materials.

Origin of short- and medium-range order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Phase-change materials such as Ge–Sb–Te compounds have attracted much attention due to their potential value in electrical data storage. In contrast to the amorphous and crystalline phases, supercooled liquids are far from being deeply understood despite their inevitable role in both amorphization and crystallization processes. To this end, we have studied the dynamics properties and structural characteristics of liquid and supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 during the fast cooling process. As the temperature decreases, chemical bonds become more homogeneous, but coordination numbers of Ge, Sb and Te atoms change very little. Meanwhile, the structural order of short-range configuration is obviously enhanced. Further studies suggest that Ge-centered, Sb-centered and Te-centered configurations change to the more ordered defective octahedrons mainly by adjusting the bond-angle relationship and bond length, rather than just by changing the coordination environment. It is the more ordered octahedrons that promote the formation of medium-range order. Our findings provide a deep insight into the origin of local structural order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 , which is of great importance for the comprehensive understanding of amorphization and crystallization processes.

Understanding Superionic Conductivity in Lithium and Sodium Salts of Weakly Coordinating Closo -Hexahalocarbaborate Anions

Solid-state ion conductors based on closo-polyborate anions combine high ionic conductivity with a rich array of tunable properties. Cation mobility in these systems is intimately related to the strength of the interaction with the neighboring anionic network and the energy for reorganizing the coordination polyhedra. In this paper, we explore such factors in solid electrolytes with two anions of the weakest coordinating ability, [HCB 11 H 5 Cl 6 ] – and [HCB 11 H 5 Br 6 ] – , and a total of 11 polymorphs are identified for their lithium and sodium salts. Our approach combines ab initio molecular dynamics, synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and AC impedance measurements to investigate their structures, phase-transition behavior, anion orientational mobilities, and ionic conductivities. We find that M(HCB 11 H 5 X 6 ) (M = Li, Na, X = Cl, Br) compounds exhibit order–disorder polymorphic transitions between 203 and 305 °C and display Li and Na superionic conductivity in the disordered state. Through detailed analysis, we illustrate how cation disordering in these compounds originates from a competitive interplay among the lattice symmetry, the anion reorientational mobility, the geometric and electronic asymmetry of the anion, and the polarizability of the halogen atoms. These factors are compared to other closo-polyborate-based ion conductors to suggest guidelines for optimizing the cation–anion interaction for fast ion mobility. This study expands the known solid-state poly(carba)borate-based materials capable of liquid-like ionic conductivities, unravels the mechanisms responsible for fast ion transport, and provides insights into the development of practical superionic solid electrolytes.

Coordination of Anle138b to Silver Results in Selective Reduction of a C-terminal truncated Alpha-synuclein Protein and Increased Aggregate Size

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent age-related neurodegenerative syndrome, partially thought to be caused by a decrease in alpha-synuclein proteostasis. Anle138b = 5-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-3-(3-bromophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (HL), is undergoing clinical trials as a promising mitigator of alpha-synuclein aggregation. Because complexation to metals is known to modulate the activity of several drugs, we have prepared and characterized: H2L(ClO4), [CuI(µ-L)]3, and [AgI(µ-L)]3. To better understand the bioviability of these compounds, we monitored their effects in a cell culture model of alpha-synuclein protein aggregation using human alpha-synuclein pre-formed fibrils (PFFs). Using two different anti-alpha-synuclein antibodies, our data suggests that [AgI(µ-L)]3 decreases a C-terminal truncated protein that is approximately 12.4 kDa, as well as increases the size and alters the shape of PFF-induced aggregates. This indicates that [AgI(µ-L)]3 impacts aggregation in a manner different from HL and may serve as a novel tool for studying C-terminal truncation related aggregation chemistry.

Second Coordination Sphere Effects in an Evolved Ru Complex Based on Highly Adaptable Ligand Results in Rapid Water Oxidation Catalysis

A new Ru complex containing the deprotonated 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-6,6"-diphosphonic acid (H 4 tPa) and pyridine (py) of general formula [Ru II (H 3 tPa-κ-N 3 O)(py) 2 ] + , 2 + , has been prepared and thoroughly characterized by means of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, X-ray diffraction analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Complex 2 + presents a dynamic behavior in the solution that involves the synchronous coordination and the decoordination of the dangling phosphonic groups of the tPa 4– ligand. Yet, at oxidation state IV, complex 2 + becomes seven coordinated with the two phosphonic groups now bonded to the metal center. Further, at this oxidation state at neutral and basic pH, the Ru complex undergoes the coordination of an exogenous OH – group from the solvent that leads to an intramolecular aromatic O atom insertion into the CH bond of one of the pyridyl groups, forming the corresponding phenoxo-phosphonate Ru complex [Ru III (tPaO-κ-N 2 O P O C )(py) 2 ] 2– , 4 2– , where tPaO 5– is the 3-(hydroxo-[2,2':6',2"-terpyridine]-6,6"-diyl)bis(phosphonate) ligand. This new in situ generated Ru complex, 4 2– , has been isolated and spectroscopically and electrochemically characterized. In addition, a crystal structure has been also obtained using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 4 2– turns out to be an exceptional water oxidation catalyst achieving record maximum turnover frequencies (TOF max ) on the order of 16 000 s –1 . A mechanistic analysis complemented with DFT calculations has further been carried out, showing the critical role of intramolecular second coordination sphere effects exerted by the phosphonate groups in lowering the activation energy at the rate-determining step.

Electrocatalytic synthesis of heterocycles from biomass-derived furfuryl alcohols

It is very attractive yet underexplored to synthesize heterocyclic moieties pertaining to biologically active molecules from biomass-based starting compounds. Herein, we report an electrocatalytic Achmatowicz reaction for the synthesis of hydropyranones from furfuryl alcohols, which can be readily produced from biomass-derived and industrially available furfural. Taking advantage of photo-induced polymerization of a bipyridyl ligand, we demonstrate the facile preparation of a heterogenized nickel electrocatalyst, which effectively drives the Achmatowicz reaction electrochemically. A suite of characterization techniques and density functional theory computations were performed to aid the understanding of the reaction mechanism. It is rationalized that the unsaturated coordination sphere of nickel sites in our electrocatalyst plays an important role at low applied potential, not only allowing the intimate interaction between the nickel center and furfuryl alcohol but also enabling the transfer of hydroxide from nickel to the bound furfuryl alcohol.

Transport of Ligand Coordinated Iron and Chromium through Cation-Exchange Membranes

Fluxes of negatively charged ligand-coordinated iron, Fe(CN) 6 3/4- , and chromium, CrPDTA 1/2− , through two promising commercial cation-exchange membranes, Aquivion E87–05S and Fumasep E-620(K), were measured as functions of current density. The magnitude of the partial current density reached a maximum of − 43 μ A cm −2 at the maximum applied current density magnitude of − 43 mA cm −2 for Fe(CN) 6 3/4− transport through Aquivion, or 0.1% of the total current density. Fumasep E-620(K) blocks practically all crossover of both compounds. Both membranes sorb more Fe(CN) 6 3/4− and CrPDTA 1/2− than predicted by Donnan equilibrium, and low crossover rates can be attributed mainly to slow diffusion, not charge-based rejection of co-ions. The magnitude of the diffusion coefficient appears to correlate with hydraulic permeability. Although Aquivion E87–05S and Fumasep E-620(K) have significant and observable differences in membrane crossover rates, cells built with the DI-soaked membranes offer similarly high coulombic efficiency, indicating the relatively small contribution that crossover makes to inefficiency over a single cycle.
