Measurement of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 branching fraction with a hadronic tagging method at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 decays using 387±6×10 6 ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) collected between 2019 and 2022 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider. We reconstruct the accompanying 𝐵 − meson using the hadronic tagging method, while 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 candidates are identified in the recoil. We find evidence for 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 decays at 3.0 standard deviations, including systematic uncertainties. The measured branching fraction is ℬ⁡(𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 )=[1.24±0.41⁢(stat)±0.19⁢(syst)]×10 −4 .

Test of lepton flavor universality with measurements of 𝑅⁡(𝐷 + ) and 𝑅⁡(𝐷* + ) using semileptonic 𝐵 tagging at the Belle II experiment

We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions ℛ⁡(𝐷 (*)+ ) = ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢𝜏 −⁢ $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢ℓ − $\bar{𝜈}$ ℓ ), where ℓ denotes either an electron or a muon. These ratios test the universality of the charged-current weak interaction. The results are based on a 365 fb −1 data sample collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider, which operates at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance, just above the threshold for $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ production. Signal candidates are reconstructed by selecting events in which the companion 𝐵 meson from the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) → $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ decay is identified in semileptonic modes. The 𝜏 lepton is reconstructed via its leptonic decays. We obtain ℛ⁡(𝐷 + ) = 0.418$^{+0.075}_{−0.073}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.049}_{−0.056}$⁢(syst) and ℛ⁡(𝐷 *+ ) = 0.306$^{+0.035}_{−0.033}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.016}_{−0.018⁢}$(syst), which are consistent with world average values. Accounting for the correlation between them, these values differ from the Standard Model expectation by a collective significance of 1.7 standard deviations.

Measurement of the 𝐷 0 →𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − branching fraction and search for 𝐷 0 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − decays at Belle

We present a study of the rare charm meson decays 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − , and 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − using a 942 fb −1 dataset collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider. We identify 𝐷 0 candidates via the charge of the pion from 𝐷* + →𝐷 0 ⁢𝜋 + decays and normalize the branching fractions to 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 + decays. The branching fraction for decay 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − is measured to be (39.6 ± 4.5 (stat) ± 2.9 (syst)) × 10 −7 , with the dielectron mass in the 𝜌/𝜔 mass region 675 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 875 MeV/⁢𝑐 2 . We also search for 𝐷 0 → ℎ − ⁡ℎ (′)+ ⁡𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − (ℎ (′) = 𝐾, 𝜋) decays with the dielectron mass near the 𝜂 and 𝜙 resonances, and away from these resonances for the 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − modes. For these modes, we find no significant signals and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions at the 𝒪⁡(10 −7 ) level.

Search for 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 and 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 (4338) 0 in ϒ(1𝑆,2𝑆) Inclusive Decays at Belle

Using data samples of 102 million ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) events and 158 million ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒+⁢𝑒− collider, we search for [𝑢⁢𝑑⁢𝑠⁢𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$ ] pentaquark states decaying to 𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ. We measure the mass and width of the 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 to be (4471.7±4.8±0.6) MeV/𝑐 2 and (22 ±13 ±3) MeV, respectively. The branching fractions for 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 production are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459)0/ $\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(3.5±2.0±0.2)×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 /$\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(2.9±1.7±0.4)×10 −6 . The inclusive branching fractions of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆,2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(36.9 ±5.3 ±2.4) ×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(22.3 ±5.7 ±3.1) ×10 −6 . We measure the visible cross section 𝜎⁡(𝑒+⁢𝑒−→𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/ $\overline{Λ}$ +anything)=(90±14±6) fb for the continuum production at √𝑠 =10.52 GeV. In all cases, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Inverse Design of Plasma Metamaterial Devices for Optical Computing

We apply inverse-design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial (PMM) devices. Backpropagated finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under both TE and TM modes. Demultiplexing and waveguiding are demonstrated for devices composed of plasma elements with reasonable plasma densities of approximately 7 GHz, allowing for future in situ training and experimental realization of these designs. We also explore the possible applicability of PMMs to nonlinear boolean operations for use in optical computing. Functionally complete logical connectives (or and and) are achieved in the TM mode.

Measurement of lepton mass squared moments in B → X c ℓ ν ¯ ℓ decays with the Belle II experiment

We present measurements of the first to fourth moments of the lepton mass squared $q$ 2 of $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays for $ℓ = e, μ$ and with $X_c$ a hadronic system containing a charm quark. These results use a sample of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ$($4S$) resonance corresponding to 62.8 fb -1 of integrated luminosity and collected by the Belle II 2 experiment in 2019 and 2020. To identify the $X_c$ system and reconstruct $q$ 2 , one of the $B$ mesons from an $Υ$($4S$) → $B\overline{B}$ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode using a multivariate $B$ tagging algorithm. We report raw and central moments for $q$ 2 > 1.5 $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 up to $q$ 2 > 8.5 $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 , probing up to 77% of the accessible $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ phase space. This is the first measurement of moments in the experimentally challenging range of [1.5; 2.5] $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 . The results can be used for a new determination of |$V_{cb}$| using inclusive $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays.

Sensitivity projections for a dual-phase argon TPC optimized for light dark matter searches through the ionization channel

Dark matter lighter than 10 GeV / c 2 encompasses a promising range of candidates. A conceptual design for a new detector, DarkSide-LowMass, is presented, based on the DarkSide-50 detector and progress toward DarkSide-20k, optimized for a low-threshold electron-counting measurement. Sensitivity to light dark matter is explored for various potential energy thresholds and background rates. These studies show that DarkSide-LowMass can achieve sensitivity to light dark matter down to the solar neutrino fog for GeV-scale masses and significant sensitivity down to 10 MeV / c 2 considering the Migdal effect or interactions with electrons. Requirements for optimizing the detector’s sensitivity are explored, as are potential sensitivity gains from modeling and mitigating spurious electron backgrounds that may dominate the signal at the lowest energies.

Novel method for the identification of the production flavor of neutral charmed mesons

We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral D mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral D meson (signal D meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the e + e – →$c\bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other charm hadron produced in the event, as well as those possibly produced in association with the signal D meson. We develop the algorithm using simulation and calibrate it in data using decay modes that identify the flavor of the decaying neutral D meson. We use a data sample of e + e – collisions, corresponding to 362 fb –1 of integrated luminosity, collected by Belle II at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(4S) mass. The effective tagging efficiency in data is (47.91±0.07 (stat) ±0.51 (syst)) %, independent of the neutral-D-meson decay mode. This charm flavor tagger will approximately double the effective sample size of many CP-violation and charm-mixing measurements that so far have exclusively relied on neutral D mesons originating from D* ± decays. While developed for Belle II, the basic principles underlying the charm flavor tagger can be used in other experiments, including those at hadron colliders.

The result, τ ($Ω_c^0$) = 243 ± 48 (stat) ± 11 (syst) fs, agrees with recent measurements indicating that the $Ω_c^0$ is not the shortest-lived weakly decaying charmed baryon.

Measurement of the B 0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using hadronic decays reconstructed in 2019–2021 Belle II data

We measure the B0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using B 0 → D(*) – π + decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e – collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the Υ⁡(4⁢S) resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other B meson in the event. The results, based on 33000 signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 190 fb –1 , are τ B 0 = (1.499 ± 0.013 ± 0.008) ps, Δ⁢m d = (0.516 ± 0.008 ± 0.005) ps –1 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

Measurement of the τ -lepton mass with the Belle II experiment

We present a measurement of the τ-lepton mass using a sample of about 175 million $e^+$$e^-$ → ${{\tau}}^+{{\tau}}^-$ events collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+$$e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy of 10.579GeV. This sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $190$ $\mathrm{fb}$$^{-1}$. We use the kinematic edge of the ${{\tau}}$ pseudomass distribution in the decay ${{\tau}}^-$ → $π^-π^+π^-ν_τ$ and measure the ${{\tau}}$ mass to be $1777.09±0.08±0.11$ $\mathrm{MeV}$ $/{c^2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is the most precise to date.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct C P asymmetries for B → K π and B → π π decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct C P asymmetries of the decays B 0 → K + π − , B + → K + π 0 , B + → K 0 π + , and B 0 → K 0 π 0 , and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct C P asymmetry of the decay B + → π + π 0 and the branching fraction of the decay B 0 → π + π − . The data are collected with the elle II detector from e + e − collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387 × 10 6 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain − 0.03 ± 0.13 ± 0.04 for the sum rule in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations. Search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at s = 10.745 GeV

We search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at a center-of-mass energy of 10.745 GeV, which is close to the peak of the ϒ ( 10753 ) state. We use data collected by the Belle II experiment during a special run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.8 fb − 1 . We reconstruct ω → π + π − π 0 decays and use the ω meson’s recoil mass to search for the signals. We do not find evidence for either process, and set upper limits on the corresponding Born-level cross sections of 2.5 pb and 7.8 pb, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. The χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω limit is the result of a combination of this analysis and a previous search using full reconstruction. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
