Excitonic Interactions and Mechanism for Ultrafast Interlayer Photoexcited Response in van der Waals Heterostructures

Optical dynamics in van der Waals heterobilayers is of fundamental scientific and practical interest. Based on a time-dependent adiabatic GW approach, we discover a new many-electron (excitonic) channel for converting photoexcited intralayer to interlayer excitations and the associated ultrafast optical responses in heterobilayers, which is conceptually different from the conventional single-particle picture. We find strong electron-hole interactions drive the dynamics and enhance the pump-probe optical responses by an order of magnitude with a rise time of ~3⁢0⁢0 fs in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterobilayers, in agreement with experiment.

Probabilistic Resilience of DER Systems - A Simulation Assisted Optimization Approach

Energy systems resilience is becoming increasingly important as the frequency of major grid outages increases. In this work, we present a methodology to optimize a behind-tlie-meter distributed energy resource system to sustain a site's critical loads during a pre-defined outage period. With the fixed system design, we then propose an outage simulation approach to estimate the resilience potential of the DER system to sustain loads beyond the fixed outage period - a yearlong resilience performance analysis. We apply statistical analysis to assess the system's resilience performance over a broader parametric problem space on an hourly, monthly, and yearly basis. We demonstrate the impact of the pre-defined outage period on the resilience performance through a case study. Results show that the probability of surviving a random outage of a given duration changes from 20% to 95% when the outage is modeled for a weekday instead of a weekend for the given load-profile.

Enabling DER visibility using a distributed dissemination network

The electrical grid is currently undergoing a series of rapid transformational changes that have resulted in the introduction of new actors and operational schemes that have fragmented the data and control planes. To help address the issue, this paper describes the implementation of a sensor-oriented, distributed data dissemination network that seeks to eliminate data silos. The implementation is based on the DGSS architecture previously described in [1]. The developed product seeks to facilitate the seamless integration of multi-operator, multi-origin, multi-domain sensor data by using a distributed systems approach. The proposed solution decouples the sensor’s data streams from the application-specific infrastructure and migrates them into a software-defined databus that can be configured to suit the end application’s demands. To further validate DGSS capabilities, a DER oriented use case has been developed.

Van der Waals density functional study of hydrocarbon adsorption and separation in metal–organic frameworks without open metal sites

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received significant attention thanks to their promising features in the storage and separation of guest molecules. MOFs without open metal sites are emerging as they are often less susceptible to poisoning compared to those with open metal sites. However, a complete understanding of the binding and gas separation mechanisms in such materials is still missing. In this work, we perform a comparative study of two classes of vanadium-based MOFs without open metal sites: MFM-300-V (III) and MFM-300-V (IV) , as well as MIL-47-V (III) and MIL-47-V (IV) . We employ first-principles van der Waals density functional theory to find the optimal binding conformations and binding energies of a series of small hydrocarbons within the pores of the aforementioned MOFs. Our study provides insight into the host–guest interactions in such MOFs without open metal sites, especially the role played by the bridging hydroxyl group (μ 2 –OH). We conclude that the bridging –OH group acts as a pseudo open metal site in these MOFs.

From vortex to bubble: Unraveling formation of merons and skyrmions in van der Waals ferromagnet $\textrm{Fe}_{5-\textrm{x}}\textrm{GeTe}_2$

Magnetic topology, such as merons and skyrmions, is important from the perspective of both fundamental physics and next-generation spintronic devices. We observe/demonstrate the coexistence of merons and skyrmions in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 5-x GeTe 2 . Merons remain stable across a wide temperature range, from 100 K to 290 K, whereas skyrmions are only present within a narrower range from 100 K to approximately 170 K. Our finding reveals that the formation of merons or skyrmions is governed by the local magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Furthermore, the spatial variations in local magnetic anisotropy are attributed to subtle fluctuations in Fe content.

Universal Utility Data Exchange (UUDEX): Information Exchange Models for Solar DER (Rev. 1)

This report describes how the Universal Utility Data Exchange (UUDEX) can encapsulate and exchange information about distributed energy resources (DER) within UUDEX-formatted JSON documents. It proposes to use the existing extensible markup language (XML) information exchange format described in IEEE Std 2030.5, IEEE Standard for Smart Energy Profile Application Protocol but not other information exchange provisions of IEEE 2030.5, rather, relying on equivalent mechanisms in UUDEX. This will allow adoption of the UUDEX exchanges with minimal changes to the structure of the information exchanged and will not require a modification to the UUDEX documentation if IEEE 2030.5 makes changes to the information models.

Community Resilience Through Rapid Restoration Leveraging Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Low-Cost Sensors

Equitable and automated bottoms-up power restoration following an extreme event will be demonstrated at a site in Puerto Rico. To do so, the team will develop enhanced grid situational awareness techniques integrating behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DER) discovery, impedance sweeping based outage boundary detection, and feasible restoration path identification algorithms. Resilience metric will be developed and incorporated along with situational awareness information in a distributed Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based restoration optimization algorithm to control and mobilize grid assets. These algorithms will be validated through power hardware-in-the-loop experiments and ultimately, a site demonstration to show that outage recovery time and total recovered load could be improved by >20% over the baseline.

From Resilient and Ready to Used and Useful: Managing Temporal and Locational Uncertainty in Electrification, DER Adoption, and Climate Adaptation

Grid planning decisions involve weighing risks against benefits. The best decisions will facilitate development of electrical infrastructure that minimizes risk and maximizes benefits. With the rapidly evolving energy landscape, today's planner must discern new loads and demand cycles; embrace the operational complexity of climate risk; revise settled standards; and anticipate and manage the system impacts of distributed energy resource (DER) adoption. Only by managing the combined uncertainty of these dynamic processes can a planner hope to make effective decisions. Our analysis focuses on the management of temporal and locational uncertainty, and particularly on the risks presented to customers by the mismanagement of the factors that are the sources of these uncertainties.

Fluidic Flow Assisted Deterministic Folding of Van der Waals Materials

Origami offers a distinct approach for designing and engineering new material structures and properties. The folding and stacking of atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials, for example, can lead to intriguing new physical properties including bandgap tuning, Van Hove singularity, and superconductivity. On the other hand, achieving well-controlled folding of vdW materials with high spatial precision has been extremely challenging and difficult to scale toward large areas. In this paper, a deterministic technique is reported to fold vdW materials at a defined position and direction using microfluidic forces. Electron beam lithography (EBL) is utilized to define the folding area, which allows precise control of the folding geometry, direction, and position beyond 100 nm resolution. Using this technique, single-atomic-layer vdW materials or their heterostructures can be folded without the need for any external supporting layers in the final folded structure. In addition, arrays of patterns can be folded across a large area using this technique and electronic devices that can reconfigure device functionalities through folding are also demonstrated. Such scalable formation of folded vdW material structures with high precision can lead to the creation of new atomic-scale materials and superlattices as well as opening the door to realizing foldable and reconfigurable electronics.

Direct Observation of Magnetic Bubble Lattices and Magnetoelastic Effects in van der Waals Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6

Abstract Ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials are of large current interest for the fundamental study of low‐dimensional magnetism and for potential applications in multilayer heterostructures. Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (CGT) is particularly exciting because it is a ferromagnetic semiconductor with tunable electronic and magnetic properties. Controlling the magnetic domain structure of CGT is a requirement for understanding its novel interface physics and for tuning behavior for potential devices. Herein, cryo‐Lorentz transmission electron microscopy is performed in the temperature range of 12–50K to directly image the magnetic domain structures in CGT. A rich phase diagram of domain structures including stripe domains, magnetic bubble lattices of mixed‐chirality, and topologically‐protected lattices of homochiral magnetic bubbles is observed. The types and chiralities of the bubbles can be controlled by topographical changes in the CGT flakes. Additionally, it is observed that in‐plane strain and magnetoelastic coupling can align and organize both bubble lattices and stripe domains. This study provides insights into creating and controlling complex magnetic domain structures for integration into multilayer heterostructures and for future studies of 2D magnetism.

Terrace‐Edge‐Induced Domain Nucleation in Room‐Temperature 2D Magnetic Van Der Waals Heterostructures

Abstract Terrace‐edges, which are step‐like height discontinuities formed during layer stacking or exfoliation, can locally modify magnetic characteristics. Magnetic domain behavior and its structural dependence in a 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure composed of two distinct room‐temperature ferromagnets: Fe 3 GaTe 2 , an intrinsic vdW ferromagnet, and vanadium‐doped WSe 2 , a transition metal dichalcogenide exhibiting defect‐induced magnetism, is investigated. Using magnetic transmission X‐ray microscopy, the formation and annihilation of magnetic domains are directly observed and it is found that domains preferentially form at terrace‐edges of the heterostructure. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that in‐plane magnetization tilting near the terrace‐edge results in a localized maximum in total magnetic energy that promotes domain formation. The findings highlight the significant role of structural edge features and interfacial magnetic interactions in determining domain formation in hybrid 2D vdW magnetic systems, offering a new route to spatially controlled magnetization at room temperature.

Layered Antiferromagnetism Induces Large Negative Magnetoresistance in the van der Waals Semiconductor CrSBr

The recent discovery of magnetism within the family of exfoliatable van der Waals (vdW) compounds has attracted considerable interest in these materials for both fundamental research and technological applications. However, current vdW magnets are limited by their extreme sensitivity to air, low ordering temperatures, and poor charge transport properties. In this work, the magnetic and electronic properties of CrSBr are reported, an air-stable vdW antiferromagnetic semiconductor that readily cleaves perpendicular to the stacking axis. Below its Néel temperature, T N = 132 ± 1 K, CrSBr adopts an A-type antiferromagnetic structure with each individual layer ferromagnetically ordered internally and the layers coupled antiferromagnetically along the stacking direction. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) reveal that the electronic gap is Δ E = 1.5 ± 0.2 eV with a corresponding PL peak centered at 1.25 ± 0.07 eV. Using magnetotransport measurements, strong coupling between magnetic order and transport properties in CrSBr is demonstrated, leading to a large negative magnetoresistance response that is unique among vdW materials. These findings establish CrSBr as a promising material platform for increasing the applicability of vdW magnets to the field of spin-based electronics.

Coexistence of Merons with Skyrmions in the Centrosymmetric Van Der Waals Ferromagnet Fe 5– x GeTe 2

Fe 5-x GeTe 2 is a centrosymmetric, layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet that displays Curie temperatures T c (270–330 K) that are within the useful range for spintronic applications. However, little is known about the interplay between its topological spin textures (e.g., merons, skyrmions) with technologically relevant transport properties such as the topological Hall effect (THE) or topological thermal transport. Here, via high-resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, it is shown that merons and anti-meron pairs coexist with Néel skyrmions in Fe 5-x GeTe 2 over a wide range of temperatures and probe their effects on thermal and electrical transport. A THE is detected, even at room T, that senses merons at higher T's, as well as their coexistence with skyrmions as T is lowered, indicating an on-demand thermally driven formation of either type of spin texture. Remarkably, an unconventional THE is also observed in absence of Lorentz force, and it is attributed to the interaction between charge carriers and magnetic field-induced chiral spin textures. Here these results expose Fe 5-x GeTe 2 as a promising candidate for the development of applications in skyrmionics/meronics due to the interplay between distinct but coexisting topological magnetic textures and unconventional transport of charge/heat carriers.
