Electronic structure and lattice dynamics of 1⁢𝑇−VSe 2 : Origin of the three-dimensional charge density wave

To characterize in detail the charge density wave (CDW) transition of 1⁢𝑇−VSe 2 , its electronic structure and lattice dynamics are comprehensively studied by means of x-ray diffraction, muon spectroscopy, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering, and state-of-the-art first-principles density functional theory calculations. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering does not show any resonant enhancement at either V or Se, indicating that the CDW peak at the 𝐾 edges describes a purely structural modulation of the electronic ordering. ARPES experiments identify (i) a pseudogap at 𝑇 > 𝑇⁢ CDW , which leads to a depletion of the density of states in the ML-M'L' plane at 𝑇 < 𝑇⁢ CDW , and (ii) anomalies in the electronic dispersion reflecting a sizable impact of phonons on it. A diffuse scattering precursor, characteristic of soft phonons, is observed at room temperature (RT) and leads to the full collapse of the low-energy phonon (𝜔 1 ) with propagation vector (0.25 0 −0.3) r.l.u. Here, we show that the frequency and linewidth of this mode are anisotropic in momentum space, reflecting the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI), hence demonstrating that the origin of the CDW is, to a much larger extent, due to the momentum dependent EPI with a small contribution from nesting. The pressure dependence of the 𝜔 1 soft mode remains nearly constant up to 13 GPa at RT, with only a modest softening before the transition to the high-pressure monoclinic C2/m phase. The wide set of experimental data is well captured by our state-of-the art first-principles anharmonic calculations with the inclusion of van der Waals corrections in the exchange-correlation functional. The comprehensive description of the electronic and dynamical properties of VSe 2 reported here adds important pieces of information to the understanding of the electronic modulations in the family of transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Extreme sensitivity of higher-order interatomic force constants and thermal conductivity to the energy surface roughness of exchange-correlation functionals

In this Letter, we report that the fourth-order interatomic force constants (4th-IFCs) are significantly sensitive to the energy surface roughness of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals in density functional theory calculations. This sensitivity, which is insignificant for the second- (2nd-) and third-order (3rd-) IFCs, varies for different functionals in different materials and can cause misprediction of thermal conductivity by several times of magnitude. As a result, when calculating the 4th-IFCs using the finite difference method, the atomic displacement needs to be taken large enough to overcome the energy surface roughness, in order to accurately predict phonon lifetime and thermal conductivity. We demonstrate this phenomenon on a benchmark material (Si), a high-thermal conductivity material (BAs), and a low thermal conductivity material (NaCl). For Si, we find that the LDA, PBE, and PBEsol XC functionals are all smooth to the 2nd- and 3rd-IFCs but all rough to the 4th-IFCs. This roughness can lead to a prediction of nearly one order of magnitude lower thermal conductivity. For BAs, all three functionals are smooth to the 2nd- and 3rd-IFCs, and only the PBEsol XC functional is rough for the 4th-IFCs, which leads to a 40% underestimation of thermal conductivity. For NaCl, all functionals are smooth to the 2nd- and 3rd-IFCs but rough to the 4th-IFCs, leading to a 70% underprediction of thermal conductivity at room temperature. In conclusion, with these observations, we provide general guidance on the calculation of 4th-IFCs for an accurate thermal conductivity prediction.

Toward an accurate equation of state and B1-B2 phase boundary for magnesium oxide up to terapascal pressures and electron-volt temperatures

By applying auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo, we calculate the equation of state (EOS) and B1-B2 phase transition of magnesium oxide (MgO) up to 1 TPa. Here, the results agree with available experimental data at low pressures and are used to benchmark the performance of various exchange-correlation functionals in density functional theory calculations. We determine PBEsol is an optimal choice for the exchange-correlation functional and perform extensive phonon and quantum molecular-dynamics calculations to obtain the thermal EOS. Our results provide a preliminary reference for the EOS and B1-B2 phase boundary of MgO from zero up to 10,500 K.

Importance of bulk excitations and coherent electron-photon-phonon scattering in photoemission from PbTe(111): Ab initio theory with experimental comparisons

This paper presents a fully ab initio many-body photoemission framework that includes coherent three-body electron-photon-phonon scattering to predict the transverse momentum distributions and the mean transverse energies (MTEs) of bulk photoelectrons from single-crystal photocathodes. The need to develop such a theory stems from the lack of studies that provide complete understanding of the underlying fundamental processes governing the transverse momentum distribution of photoelectrons emitted from single crystals. For example, initial predictions based on density-functional theory calculations of effective electron masses suggested that the (111) surface of PbTe would produce very small MTEs (≤ 15 meV), whereas our experiments yielded MTEs ten to twenty times larger than these predictions and also exhibited a lower photoemission threshold than predicted. The ab initio framework presented in this paper correctly reproduces both the magnitude of the MTEs from our measurements in PbTe(111) and the observed photoemission below the predicted threshold. Our results show that both photoexcitations into states that propagate in the bulk of the material and coherent many-body electron-photon-phonon scattering processes, which initial predictions ignored, play surprisingly important roles in photoemission from PbTe(111). Lastly, from the lessons learned, we recommend a procedure for rapid computational screening of potential single-crystal photocathodes for applications in next-generation ultrafast electron diffraction and X-ray free-electron lasers, which will enable significant advances in condensed matter research.

Protein C-GeM: A Coarse-Grained Electron Model for Fast and Accurate Protein Electrostatics Prediction

The electrostatic potential (ESP) is a powerful property for understanding and predicting electrostatic charge distributions that drive interactions between molecules. In this study, we compare various charge partitioning schemes including fitted charges, density-based quantum mechanical (QM) partitioning schemes, charge equilibration methods, and our recently introduced coarse-grained electron model, C-GeM, to describe the ESP for protein systems. Furthermore, when benchmarked against high quality density functional theory calculations of the ESP for tripeptides and the crambin protein, we find that the C-GeM model is of comparable accuracy to ab initio charge partitioning methods, but with orders of magnitude improvement in computational efficiency since it does not require either the electron density or the electrostatic potential as input.

Tailoring the structural durability and proton conductivity of electrolytes for highly fuel-flexible and reversible ceramic cells

A durable and high ionic conducting electrolyte is critical for achieving fuel-flexible and reversible protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) at reduced temperatures since the developed electrolyte materials are vulnerable to steam, CO 2 , or coking deterioration. Here, we report a fast-conducting electrolyte material BaZr 0.06 Ce 0.7 Y 0.06 Yb 0.06 Hf 0.06 Gd 0.06 O 3−δ (BZCYYbHG), demonstrating excellent durability against CO 2 and H 2 O under the realistic electrolysis operations, and a high conductivity of 0.017 S cm −1 at 550 °C for lowering the PCC operating temperature. Further, density functional theory calculations indicate that the higher configurational entropy of mixing at the B-site cations slightly reduces the hydrogen adsorption energy, suggesting a higher incorporation rate of protons or hydrogen atoms into the electrolyte bulk. Ultimately, single cells with the BZCYYbHG electrolyte deliver peak power densities of 1.39, 1.12, and 0.7 W cm −2 in H 2 , NH 3 , and wet CH 4 at 550 °C with promising durability. In addition, the PCCs achieve a current density of −1.61 A cm −2 at 1.3 V and 550 °C with a high faradaic efficiency of 91.3% at −0.5 A cm −2 , enabling stable operations in steam electrolysis mode under humid air (30% H 2 O), wet air containing CO 2 (up to 10%), and reversible cycling.

Potential high-performance magnet materials: Co- and Al-alloyed Sm 2 Fe 17

Sm 2 Fe 17 has long been known as a potential high-performance magnet whose deficiencies—planar anisotropy and lower-than-optimal T c —can be remedied by nitrogen addition, but which presents synthesis difficulties. In this work, we apply first-principles calculations to search for alternative low-cost, high-performance permanent magnets in this family, by exploring simultaneous Fe and Al substitution. Specifically, the goal is to improve properties of Sm 2 Fe 14 Al 3 easy-plane magnet at the stoichiometric composition. Density functional theory calculations were executed for three series of compounds, i.e., Sm 2 (Fe 1-x Co x ) 14 Al 3 , Sm 2 (Fe 1-x Co x ) 15 Al 2 , and Sm 2 (Fe 1-x Cox) 16 Al. We find that substitution of Fe with 12–18 of Co in % Sm 2 Fe 14 Al 3 modifies the magnetic anisotropy type from easy plane to easy axis with a substantial anisotropy of 7.1 MJ/m 3 . We also demonstrate that the largest part of magnetic anisotropy is introduced by 4f Sm atom electrons. Thus the rotation of magnetic moment orientation from $\langle$$1\bar10$$\rangle$ to $\langle$111$\rangle$ is followed by an increase of the occupied 4f state number and, as a result, the orbital part of the magnetic moment of one of the Sm atoms. This increase of the occupied 4f state number at an energy ~ -4.3 eV results in a significant reduction of band structure energy. The substitution of Fe by Co does not significantly reduce the magnetization of the compound and keeps it slightly above 1 T. This combination of magnetic anisotropy and magnetization makes the compound a promising candidate for a permanent magnet.

Suppressing Charged Cation Antisites via Se Vapor Annealing Enables p-Type Dopability in AgBiSe 2 –SnSe Thermoelectrics

Cation disordering is commonly found in multinary cubic compounds, but its effect on electronic properties has been neglected because of difficulties in determining the ordered structure and defect energetics. An absence of rational understanding of the point defects present has led to poor reproducibility and uncontrolled conduction type. AgBiSe 2 is a representative compound that suffers from poor reproducibility of thermoelectric properties, while the origins of its intrinsic n-type conductivity remain speculative. Here, it is demonstrated that cation disordering is facilitated by Bi Ag charged antisite defects in cubic AgBiSe 2 which also act as a principal donor defect that greatly controls the electronic properties. Using density functional theory calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy, how saturation annealing with selenium vapor can stabilize p-type conductivity in cubic AgBiSe 2 alloyed with SnSe at high temperatures is elucidated. With stable and controlled hole concentration, a peak is observed in the weighted mobility and the density-of-states effective mass in AgBiSnSe 3 , implying an increased valley degeneracy in this system. These findings corroborate the importance of considering the defect energetics for exploring the dopability of ternary thermoelectric chalcogenides and engineering electronic bands by controlling self-doping.

ETHOS: An automated framework to generate multi-fidelity constitutive data tables and propagate uncertainties to hydrodynamic simulations

Accurate constitutive data, such as equations of state and plasma transport coefficients, are necessary for reliable hydrodynamic simulations of plasma systems such as fusion targets, planets, and stars. Here, we develop a framework for automatically generating transport-coefficient tables using a parameterized model that incorporates data from both high-fidelity sources (e.g., density functional theory calculations and reference experiments) and lower-fidelity sources (e.g., average-atom and analytic models). The framework incorporates uncertainties from these multi-fidelity sources, generating ensembles of optimally diverse tables that are suitable for uncertainty quantification of hydrodynamic simulations. We illustrate the utility of the framework with magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetically launched flyer plates, which are used to measure material properties in pulsed-power experiments. We explore how changes in the uncertainties assigned to the multi-fidelity data sources propagate to changes in simulation outputs and find that our simulations are most sensitive to uncertainties near the melting transition. The presented framework enables computationally efficient uncertainty quantification that readily incorporates new high-fidelity measurements or calculations and identifies plasma regimes where additional data will have high impact.

UOTe: Kondo‐Interacting Topological Antiferromagnet in a Van der Waals Lattice

Since the initial discovery of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials, significant effort has been made to incorporate the three properties of magnetism, band structure topology, and strong electron correlations—to leverage emergent quantum phenomena and expand their potential applications. However, the discovery of a single vdW material that intrinsically hosts all three ingredients has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, in this work, the discovery of a Kondo-interacting topological antiferromagnet is reported in the vdW 5f electron system UOTe. It has a high antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature of 150 K, with a unique AFM configuration that breaks the combined parity and time reversal (PT) symmetry in an even number of layers while maintaining zero net magnetic moment. This angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal Dirac bands near the Fermi level, which combined with the theoretical calculations demonstrate UOTe as an AFM Dirac semimetal. Within the AFM order, the presence of the Kondo interaction is observed, as evidenced by the emergence of a 5ƒ flat band near the Fermi level below 100 K and hybridization between the Kondo band and the Dirac band. The density functional theory calculations in its bilayer form predict UOTe as a rare example of a fully-compensated AFM Chern insulator.

A noncollinear density functional theory ansatz for the phononic and thermodynamic properties of α -Pu

Plutonium's phase diagram is host to complex structures and interactions that make the description of its ground state properties elusive. Using all-electron density functional theory calculations, we study the thermodynamic properties of α-Pu. To do this, we build on recent work in the literature by introducing a novel noncollinear magnetic ansatz for α-Pu's ground state. We show that the noncollinear ansatz improves the description of the experimental phonon density of states, heat capacity, and thermal expansion over previous results obtained with a collinear ansatz. Here, despite lacking a bond-equivalent picture of the bonding, these new results for α-Pu, along with recent results on δ-Pu, demonstrate the efficacy of noncollinear ansatzes for the description of plutonium.

Surface structure of Sn doped β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) p(1×1) studied by quantitative low energy electron diffraction

Here, we have studied the surface structure of a single crystal β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) using quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS measurements show spectra typical of stoichiometric Ga 2 O 3 with a clean surface. LEED consistently shows a p(1x1) pattern, free of surface reconstruction. Quantitative LEED I(V) curves are acquired for 41 distinct diffraction spots. The experimental I(V) curves are compared to simulations over the first five layers. The best fits to the experimental LEED I(V) curves acquired at all diffraction spots are then used to calculate the interplanar relaxation and atomic rumpling. Significant atomic rumpling and interplanar relaxation are found over the first 5 atomic layers. As a result of rumpling a polarization of ~ 2 μC/cm 2 develops in the topmost surface layer. The structural results are in good agreement with previous density functional theory calculations and experimental X-ray photoelectron diffraction.

Estimates of Quantum Tunneling Effects for Hydrogen Diffusion in PuO 2

We detail the estimation of activation energies and quantum nuclear vibrational tunneling effects for hydrogen diffusion in PuO 2 based on Density Functional Theory calculations and a quantum double well approximation. We find that results are relatively insensitive to choice of exchange correlation functional. In addition, the representation of spin in the system and use of an extended Hubbard U correction has only a small effect on hydrogen point defect formation energies when the PuO 2 lattice is held fixed at the experimental density. We then compute approximate activation energies for transitions between hydrogen interstitial sites seeded by a semi-empirical quantum model and determine the quantum tunneling enhancement relative to classical kinetic rates. Our model indicates that diffusion rates in H/PuO 2 systems could be enhanced by more than one order of magnitude at ambient conditions and that these effects persist at high temperature. The method we propose here can be used as a fast screening tool for assessing possible quantum nuclear vibrational effects in any number of condensed phase materials and surfaces, where hydrogen hopping tends to follow well defined minimum energy pathways.

Trigonal polymorph of Li 2 MnO 3

We report the discovery of a trigonal polymorph of the prospective Li ion battery material Li 2 MnO 3 and its synthesis in bulk, single crystal form. Crystal growth of trigonal Li 2 MnO 3 is strongly dependent upon the quality of a polycrystalline LiMnO 2 precursor consumed in the synthesis process. The crystal structure of the new trigonal phase is composed of ordered honeycomb layers of LiO 6 and MnO 6 octahedra segregated by layers of LiO 6 octahedra and represents an ordered stacking variant of the known monoclinic polymorph. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals a direct optical gap of 2.47 ± 0.11 eV and a series of charge excitations that are well explained by the expected Mn 4+ 3d 3 valence. Density functional theory calculations are in excellent agreement with the spectroscopic measurements and find a near degeneracy in the formation energies of the two polymorphs. Furthermore, our results suggest that the trigonal structure resolves the compositional and structural disorder often manifested in the monoclinic phase.

Conformal high-entropy oxide coatings enable fast and durable surface oxygen reactions

Developing active and durable air electrodes for efficient oxygen reactions is challenging for protonic ceramic cells (PCCs), especially at temperatures below 550°C. Here, in this study, we report a rationally designed conformal coating with a high-entropy PrNi 0.2 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Fe 0.2 Cu 0.2 O 3−δ (PNMCFC) perovskite structure on the surface of a state-of-the-art PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ (PBC) air electrode. The formed hybrid air electrode (PNMCFC-PBC) shows faster surface oxygen kinetics and a more stable phase structure in high-humidity air than the bare PBC electrode. Further density functional theory calculations suggest that the conformal coating mitigates Ba segregation at the interface and improves oxygen-related reactions, enhancing overall stability and electrocatalytic performance. The cells with the developed hybrid electrodes show encouraging electrochemical performance at 550°C: a polarization resistance of 0.72 Ω cm 2 , a peak power density of 1.30 W cm −2 , an electrolysis current density of −1.36 A cm −2 at 1.3 V, and reasonable operating stabilities (∼200 h at 550°C).

AL4GAP: Active learning workflow for generating DFT-SCAN accurate machine-learning potentials for combinatorial molten salt mixtures

Machine learning interatomic potentials have emerged as a powerful tool for bypassing the spatiotemporal limitations of ab initio simulations, but major challenges remain in their efficient parameterization. We present AL4GAP, an ensemble active learning software workflow for generating multicomposition Gaussian approximation potentials (GAP) for arbitrary molten salt mixtures. The workflow capabilities include: (1) setting up user-defined combinatorial chemical spaces of charge neutral mixtures of arbitrary molten mixtures spanning 11 cations (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and two heavy species, Nd, and Th) and 4 anions (F, Cl, Br, and I), (2) configurational sampling using low-cost empirical parameterizations, (3) active learning for down-selecting configurational samples for single point density functional theory calculations at the level of Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed (SCAN) exchange-correlation functional, and (4) Bayesian optimization for hyperparameter tuning of two-body and many-body GAP models. Here, we apply the AL4GAP workflow to showcase high throughput generation of five independent GAP models for multicomposition binary-mixture melts, each of increasing complexity with respect to charge valency and electronic structure, namely: LiCl–KCl, NaCl–CaCl 2 , KCl–NdCl 3 , CaCl 2 –NdCl 3 , and KCl–ThCl 4 . Our results indicate that GAP models can accurately predict structure for diverse molten salt mixture with density functional theory (DFT)-SCAN accuracy, capturing the intermediate range ordering characteristic of the multivalent cationic melts.

Eshelby-twisted three-dimensional moiré superlattices

Twisted bilayers of van der Waals materials have recently attracted great attention due to their tunable, strongly correlated phenomena. In this work, we investigate the chirality-specific physics in three-dimensional moiré superlattices induced by Eshelby twist. Our direct density functional theory calculations reveal helical rotation leads to optical circular dichroism and chirality-specific nonlinear Hall effect, even though there is no magnetization or magnetic field. Both these phenomena can be reversed by changing the structural chirality. This provides a path to constructing chirality-specific materials.

Stabilization of N6 and N8 anionic units and 2D polynitrogen layers in high-pressure scandium polynitrides

Abstract Nitrogen catenation under high pressure leads to the formation of polynitrogen compounds with potentially unique properties. The exploration of the entire spectrum of poly- and oligo-nitrogen moieties is still in its earliest stages. Here, we report on four novel scandium nitrides, Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , ScN 5, and Sc 4 N 3 , synthesized by direct reaction between yttrium and nitrogen at 78-125 GPa and 2500 K in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. High-pressure synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in the crystal structures of the nitrogen-rich Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8, and ScN 5 phases nitrogen is catenated forming previously unknown N 6 6 − and N 8 6 − units and$${\!\,}_{\infty }{\!\,}^{2}({{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}_{5}^{3-})$$ ∞ 2 ( N 5 3 − ) anionic corrugated 2D-polynitrogen layers consisting of fused N 12 rings. Density functional theory calculations, confirming the dynamical stability of the synthesized compounds, show that Sc 2 N 6 and Sc 2 N 8 possess an anion-driven metallicity, while ScN 5 is an indirect semiconductor. Sc 2 N 6 , Sc 2 N 8 , and ScN 5 solids are promising high-energy-density materials with calculated volumetric energy density, detonation velocity, and detonation pressure higher than those of TNT.
