High energy particles and quanta in astrophysics

The various subdisciplines of high-energy astrophysics are surveyed in a series of articles which attempt to give an overall view of the subject as a whole by emphasizing the basic physics common to all fields in which high-energy particles and quanta play a role. Successive chapters cover cosmic ray experimental observations, the abundances of nuclei in the cosmic radiation, cosmic electrons, solar modulation, solar particles (observation, relationship to the sun acceleration, interplanetary medium), radio astronomy, galactic X-ray sources, the cosmic X-ray background, and gamma ray astronomy. Individual items are announced in this issue.

The interplanetary modulation and transport of Jovian electrons

Based on simultaneous measurements by Pioneer 11 of the 3-6 MeV Jovian electron flux, interplanetary magnetic field magnitude, and solar wind speed, the interplanetary transport of energetic particles is studied. It is found that corotating interaction regions (CIR's) greatly inhibit electron transport across the average field direction. Cross-field transport is also influenced by the degree of compression of the solar wind since CIR's are areas of compressed solar wind plasma. The propagation of Jovian electrons is studied by a model that includes the effects of CIR's. The model tests whether or not the three-dimensional convection-diffusion theory adequately describes the cross-field transport of electrons. The model is also valid for Jovian electron observations from earth-orbiting satellites. The model may be further applied to 1 AU from the sun where it is found that the cross-field diffusion of electrons explains why Jovian electrons are detected at the earth even during periods when the interplanetary magnetic field does not connect the earth directly to Jupiter.

SPS fiber optic link assessment

Fiber optic technology was tentatively selected in the SPS baseline design to transmit a stable phase reference throughout microwave array. Over a hundred thousand microwave modules are electronically steered by the phase reference signal to form the power beam at the ground receiving station. The initially selected IF distribution frequency of the phase reference signal was at 980 MHz or a submultiple of it. Fiber optics offers some significant advantages in view of the SPS application. Optical transmission is highly immune to EMI/RFI, which is expected to be severe when considering the low distribution power. In addition, there are savings in both mass, physical size, and potentially in cost.

A distributed data acquisition system for aeronautics test facilities

The NASA Lewis Research Center is in the process of installing a new data acquisition and display system. This new system will provide small and medium sized aeronautics test facilities with a state-of-the-art real-time data acquisition and display system. The new data system will provide for the acquisition of signals from a variety of instrumentation sources. They include analog measurements of temperatures, pressures, and other steady state voltage inputs; frequency inputs to measure speed and flow; discrete I/O for significant events, and modular instrument systems such as multiplexed pressure modules or electronic instrumentation with a IEEE 488 interface. The data system is designed to acquire data, convert it to engineering units, compute test dependent performance calculations, limit check selected channels or calculations, and display the information in alphanumeric or graphical form with a cycle time of one second for the alphanumeric data. This paper describes the system configuration, its salient features, and the expected impact on testing.

Magnetic helicity of the IMF and the solar modulation of cosmic rays

Using interplanetary magnetic field data acquired at 1 AU, it is shown that the distribution of magnetic helicity in the heliosphere is asymmetric about the current sheet, in accord with recent theoretical predictions. Such an asymmetric distribution of helicity can in principle explaian the sensitivity of the solar modulation of cosmic rays to the sun's magnetic polarity, as observed in charge sign dependent modulation, Jovian electrons, and anomalous He-4.

Solar cycle modulation of Galactic protons and electrons

It is demonstrated here, through a detailed application of the model of Perko and Fisk (1983), that the cyclic variation in the cosmic ray spectra, the gradient, and the hysteresis, all in the ecliptic plane, can be caused by the accumulated effect of strong scattering regions moving out from the sun. The proton data in the form of spectral ratios, considered to be signatures of drifts, can be simply explained in terms of hysteresis effects, although a charge-dependent effect cannot be ruled out. It is also shown that cosmic ray recovery in this model can occur immediately after a sudden intensity decrease without requiring the disturbance to weaken as it propagates away; however, it is an energy-dependent recovery, a result of diffusive propagation inward, which partially contradicts data gathered at 1 AU. The cosmic ray intensity profiles at 1 AU may result from mechanisms different from those that exist beyond several AU.

Electromagnetic fields from pulsed electron beam experiments in space - Spacelab-2 results

During the Spacelab-2 mission a small satellite carrying various plasma diagnostic instruments was released from the Shuttle to coorbit at distances up to 300 m. During a magnetic conjunction of the Shuttle and the satellite an electron beam modulated at 1.22 kHz was emitted from the Shuttle during a 7 min period. The spatial structure of the electromagnetic fields generated by the beam was observed from the satellite out to a distance of 153 m perpendicular to the beam. The magnetic field amplitude of the strongest harmonics were comparable to the amplitude of simultaneously observed whistlers, while the electric field amplitudes were estimated to 1-10 mV/m.

Auto- and hetero-associative memory using a 2-D optical logic gate

An optical associative memory system suitable for both auto- and hetero-associative recall is demonstrated. This system utilizes Hamming distance as the similarity measure between a binary input and a memory image with the aid of a two-dimensional optical EXCLUSIVE OR (XOR) gate and a parallel electronics comparator module. Based on the Hamming distance measurement, this optical associative memory performs a nearest neighbor search and the result is displayed in the output plane in real-time. This optical associative memory is fast and noniterative and produces no output spurious states as compared with that of the Hopfield neural network model.

Vibration Sensitivity of a Wide-Temperature Electronically Scanned Pressure Measurement (ESP) Module

A vibration sensitivity test was conducted on a Wide-Temperature ESP module. The test object was Module "M4," a 16-channel, 4 psi unit scheduled for installation in the Arc Sector of NTF. The module was installed on a vibration exciter and loaded to positive then negative full-scale pressures (+/-2.5 psid). Test variables were the following: Vibration frequencies: 20, 55, 75 Hz. Vibration level: 1 g. Vibration axes: X, Y, Z. The pressure response was measured on each channel, first without and then with the vibration turned on, and the difference analyzed by means of the statistical t-test. The results show that the vibration sensitivity does not exceed 0.01% Full Scale Output per g (with the exception of one channel on one axis) to a 95 percent confidence level. This specification, limited by the resolution of the pressure source, lies well below the total uncertainty specification of 0.1 percent Full Scale Output.

Hardware Interface Description for the Integrated Power, Avionics, and Software (iPAS) Space Telecommunications Radio Ssystem (STRS) Radio

The Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) provides a common, consistent framework for software defined radios (SDRs) to abstract the application software from the radio platform hardware. The STRS standard aims to reduce the cost and risk of using complex, configurable and reprogrammable radio systems across NASA missions. To promote the use of the STRS architecture for future NASA advanced exploration missions, NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) developed an STRS-compliant SDR on a radio platform used by the Advance Exploration System program at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in their Integrated Power, Avionics, and Software (iPAS) laboratory. The iPAS STRS Radio was implemented on the Reconfigurable, Intelligently-Adaptive Communication System (RIACS) platform, currently being used for radio development at JSC. The platform consists of a Xilinx ML605 Virtex-6 FPGA board, an Analog Devices FMCOMMS1-EBZ RF transceiver board, and an Embedded PC (Axiomtek eBox 620-110-FL) running the Ubuntu 12.4 operating system. Figure 1 shows the RIACS platform hardware. The result of this development is a very low cost STRS compliant platform that can be used for waveform developments for multiple applications. The purpose of this document is to describe how to develop a new waveform using the RIACS platform and the Very High Speed Integrated Circuits (VHSIC) Hardware Description Language (VHDL) FPGA wrapper code and the STRS implementation on the Axiomtek processor.
