An analysis of the Voyager EUV spectra of the Jupiter sunlit equatorial emissions shows no evidence for a substantial dependence of atomic hydrogen abundance on magnetic longitude, required by earlier theories of the H Ly-alpha longitudinal asymmetry. An explanation for the H Ly-alpha bulge phenomenon is advanced in this work that conforms to the observations and does not require a strong asymmetry in atomic hydrogen abundance. It is proposed that the H Ly-alpha bulge is caused by a combination of proton collisional transfer of H(2s) atoms in the H(2p) state, and production through recombination of H2(+) and H3(+), in an asymmetric ionosphere. According to the present model a large fraction of the observed H Ly-alpha emission from the equatorial region is electron excited, at least at times of solar maximum.
Suprathermal electron fluxes measured in the ionosphere of Mars by the retarding potential analyzer (RPA) on Viking lander 1 are presented and compared with the photoelectron flux that is produced by the absorption of the solar EUV. The calculation of the equilibrium photoelectron population on Mars is based on the multistream electron transport theory and a model neutral atmosphere and ionosphere that was actually observed by Viking lander 1. From the theoretical equilibrium photoelectron population, the expected RPA volt-ampere characteristic curves are computed and compared with those recorded by the instrument. The theoretical and the observed RPA currents below about 170 km are in agreement, confirming that the solar EUV is the main source of suprathermal electrons at these altitudes. Above about 170 km an additional source of suprathermal electrons is required to explain the observations.
On the nights of October 21 and 28, 1987 (UT), two Nike Orion payloads (NASA 31.066 and 31.067) were launched from Andoya, Norway, as part of the MAC/Epsilon campaign, to study auroral energetics and their effect on the middle atmosphere. Each payload carried instrumentation to measure relativistic electrons from 0.1 to 1.0 MeV in 12 differential channels, and Bremsstrahlung X-rays from greater than 5 to greater than 80 KeV in 5 integral channels. In addition, instrumentation to measure ion densities and electric fields were also included on these and, in the case of 31.066, on other near simultaneous payloads. The first flight, 31.066, was launched under pre-magnetic midnight conditions during relatively stable auroral conditions. Flight 31.067 was launched during post-breakup conditions at which time pulsations of approx. 100 seconds duration were evident. The measured radiations including their spectral characteristics are compared for these two events, to appraise their effect on the electrodynamic properties of the middle atmosphere as determined by other rocket-borne measurements.
The origin of wintertime mesospheric echoes observed with the mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radar at Poker Flat, Alaska, was studied by probing the mesosphere with in situ rocket measurements during echo occurrences in the early spring, 1985. Within the height range 65-75 km, the structure of the large scale wave field was identified. In this region, a gravity wave with a vertical wavelength of about 2 km was found superimposed on a wave with a larger amplitude and a vertical wavelength of about 6.6 km. Because of the close correlation between the smaller amplitude wave and the modulation observed in the S/N profiles, it is concluded that the smaller wave was dominant in generating turbulence within the middle atmosphere.

We present a careful statistical analysis of pulsating aurora (PA) using all-sky green line (557.7 nm) images obtained at 3.3 Hz. Six well-defined individual PA patches are identified and extracted using a contouring technique. Quantitative parameters such as the patch duration (on-time and off-time), peak intensity, and integrated intensity are determined for each patch and each pulsation. The resulting characteristics serve as strict observational constraints that any of the many competing theories attempting to explain PA must predict. The purpose of this paper is to determine the characteristics of PA patches in order to provide better observational constraints on the suggested mechanisms. All aspects of the temporal behavior of the individual patches appear to be erratic. Historically, PA has been defined very loosely and we argue that the use of the term pulsating is inappropriate since our findings and other published results are not regularly periodic and thus a more appropriate term may be fluctuating aurora. Further, we find that the observational constraints do not fit well with the flow cyclotron maser theory, which in particular is suggested to create PA patches. There is no clear candidate of the suggested mechanisms and drivers to explain the observational constraints set by the PA patches in a satisfactory manner.
Heavy-ion-induced degradation in the reverse leakage current of SiC Schottky power diodes exhibits a strong dependence on the ion angle of incidence. This effect is studied experimentally for several different bias voltages applied during heavy-ion exposure. In addition, TCAD simulations are used to give insight on the physical mechanisms involved.
